Batsmen who have scored centuries on test debut and in farewell tests – AN Cook of England joins the elite list

AN Cook of England became the fifth batsman in the annals of test cricket to score centuries on debut test and also in the farewell test.  He had scored 104 not out against India on his test debut at Nagpur in Mar 2006 and scored 147 in his farewell test  also against India at  The Oval in Sep 2018. RA Duff, WH Ponsford, GS Chappell, and M Azharuddin are the other four batsmen to perform such a rare feat. The performance of these five batsmen is tabulated below.

AN Cook is the third batsman to perform the feat against the same opposition and is also the first England batsman to perform such a feat. RA Duff, WH Ponsford chose Australia as their opposition, while AN Cook chose India as his opposition. GS Chappell scored his debut century against England and scored his farewell test century against Pakistan. M Azaruddin’s debut test century came against England while his farewell test century was against South Africa.

CAG Russell of England is the only batsman in the annals of test cricket to score centuries in both innings of his farewell test. He scored  140 and 111 against South Africa at Durban in Feb 1923

The test cricket has witnessed a unique occasion of rival batsmen scoring twin fifties in their farewell test. RK Nunes of West Indies scored 66 and 92 against England at Kingston in April 1930 ,while  A Sandham of England scored 325 and 50 in the same test

A Sandham of England remains the only batsman in the annals  of test cricket  to score 300 plus runs in  his  farewell test. He scored 325 and 50 against West Indies at Kingson in April 1930

AN Cook will become the second batsman to score twin fifty in his farewell test against India. JDB Robertson of England is the other batsman. He had scored 77 and 56 against India at Chennai in Feb 1952. It is interesting to note that JDB Roberstson and AN Cook are the England batsmen to perform the feat against India
