This article is penned by Sri C Keshavamurthy

The match expected to be a cake walk for Karnataka turned out to be the most exciting one with fortunes fluctuating from time to time on either side. Himachal Pradesh who had gone down to Karnataka by an innings margin without semblance of a fight in its first ever encounter against Karnataka at Bangalore in 2007/08, impressed in this match by putting the visitors in an embarrassing situation on more than one occasion. Ultimately the match swung in Karnataka’s favour to secure a place in this season’s quarter final of the national championship. The inexperience of HP in coping up with the pressure excercised by the previous season’s finalists led its downfall. Karnataka have now won three of the four matches played and are sitting pretty on top of the table in Group B of the Super League.

Himachal Pradesh recorded the highest total against Karnataka by posting 218 in the second innings, which bettered the previous totals of 179 and 147 made at Bangalore in 2007/08 and 199 in the first innings at Dharmasala. Likewise Karnataka too recorded its lowest total in making 230 against HP. Karnataka had scored 452/9 d at Bangalore in 2007/08 and then 254 in the first innings at Dharmasala.

Dharmasala became the newest venue for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy – 51st – excluding the venues in Karnataka.

Stuart Binny recorded his first century in Ranji Trophy career in his 21st match and 35th innings. He was playing in his first match of this season. His previous highest score was 66 against Baroda at Vadodara in 2009/10.

Amit Verma posted his third fifty plus score in 2010/11 when he made a match saving 76 in the first innings. This was his sixth 50 plus score including three centuries in 15 RT matches.

Manish Pandey, who was responsible in saving Karnataka from the rout in the second innings, scored 112 after a first ball duck in the first innings. This was his 6th century in 18 matches. Apart from this he has scored seven fifties.

By scoring 0 and 112 against HP, Manish Pandey became the only Karnataka player to accomplish the feat of scoring a duck and a century in the same match on TWO separate occasions. It may be recalled here that Pandey had made 0 and 144 against Mumbai in the Final at Mysore in 2009/10. Incidentally Pandey had fallen for a first ball duck in the first innings against Mumbai also. The only other Karnataka players to have scored a century and a duck in the same match are Carlton Saldanha (0 & 102*) against Goa at Pandjim in 1990/91 and RV Uthappa (131 & 0) against Railways at Bangalore in 2008/09.

Stuart Binny and Manish Pandey became the third and fourth Karnataka players to record a century against HP. Earlier Rahul Dravid (121) and VS Thilak Naidu (105) had scored hundreds at Bangalore in 2007/08.

Sunil Joshi, recorded his 12th duck of his career when he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. Joshi’s 12 ducks is next only to the joint record held by R Ananth and BS Chandrasekhar – who have both scored 14 ducks in their playing career.

Ganish Satish, the Karnataka skipper, who had never been dismissed for a duck in his previous 13 Ranji Trophy matches, finally achieved this dubious distinction when he was dismissed for a duck in his 14th match.

A Mithun took his first five wicket haul (5 for 82) in 2010/11. This was his fourth five wicket haul in 13 matches apart from one ten wicket haul in the match. His best bowling performance remains at 6 for 71 against Mumbai at Mysore in the Final in 2009/10.

5-82 by Mithun also wiped out the hitherto best bowling performance against HP which was 3-26 recorded by R Vinaykumar at Bangalore in 2007/08.

Mohinderraj Sharma became the second Himachal Pradesh player to take five wickets in an innings (5 for 29) against Karnataka after V Bhatia who had taken 6-129 at Bangalore in 2007/08. This was his fourth five wicket haul in 11 RT matches.

5-29 by Mohinderraj Sharma was also his best bowling performance of his career surpassing the previous best of 5-31 against Gujarat at Surat in 2009/10

9-81 by Mohinderraj Sharma was also his career best bowling performance in a match overtaking the previous best of 7-170 against Orissa at Dharmasala in 2009/10.

Mohinderraj Sharma who took 9-81 in the match, broke the match bowling performance for HP against Karnataka which stood in the name of V Bhatia (6-129) at Bangalore in 2007/08.

MS Bisla, who was hitherto the highest individual scorer for HP (before H Dogra made 45 in the first innings at Dharmasala) continued his record of being the highest individual scorer against Karnataka by making 58. This was his first fifty against Karnataka and his 12th fifty plus score including four centuries in 35 RT matches.

55 by Paras Dogra, skipper of HP, was also his first fifty against Karnataka and his 15th fifty plus score including four centuries in 42 RT matches.

S Aravind, who took 7-93 in the match, bettered the best match bowling performance by a Karnataka player against HP which was 6-58 by R Vinaykumar at Bangalore in 2007/08.

The 155 runs partnership for sixth wicket between Amit Verma and Stuart Binny, who both performed the rescue act after Karnataka was reeling at 5 for 46, is a new record for any wicket against HP by Karnataka. The previous best was 131 for the second wicket between KB Pawan and RS Dravid at Bangalore in 2007/08.

The 107 runs partnership between P Dogra and MS Bisla for sixth wicket in the second innings, which at one time had threatened to take the match away from Karnataka, also happened to be the first century stand for HP against Karnataka.

MS Bisla effected four dismissals in Karnataka’s first innings to become the 28th opposition wicket keeper to effect four or more dismissals in an innings. Earlier, in the match against Haryana in 2010 for 11, NS Saini had become the 23rd wicket keeper to do so. Saini had effected seven dismissals in the match (4/1 plus 2)

RV Uthappa who donned the role of a regular wicket keeper for Karnataka in the absence of the injured CM Gautam, became the 28th wicket keeper for Karnataka. He took 3 catches in the match. Apart from this he has held 48 catches as a fielder in 46 RT matches.

In the last three successive innings, Karnataka’s top order has failed to click a modest score. However, inspite of reeling at 5 for 54 against Orissa at Bangalore, 5 for 46 and 5 for 74 against HP at Dharmasala, Karnataka have won both the matches.

Ranji Trophy 2010-11 : Karnataka vs Orissa : Hosts script an innings win

Highlights of Karnataka/Orissa Ranji Trophy match at Bangalore : 24th to 27th November 2010; Karnataka won by an innings and 33 runs

This article is penned by Sri C Keshavamurthy

In the absence of regular captain R Vinaykumar donning the duties in the One Day International series against New Zealand, Ganesh Satish led Karnataka in the match against Orissa at Bangalore, He became the 46th captain to lead Karnataka in Ranji Trophy.

He became the third Karnataka captain to lead against Orissa. The other two are – GR Viswanath at Bangalore in 1984/85 and A Kumble at Rourkela in 1997/98.

Ganesh Satish celebrated his captaincy assignment by winning the match comfortably. He became the 21st Karnataka captain to win a match on his first captaincy assignment. R Vinaykumar had earlier performed a similar feat in the inaugural match of this season against Punjab at Mohali in November 2010. Ganesh Satish thus brought in a hat trick of wins against Orissa as Karnatka had won both the matches – the first ever in 1984/85 and the last in 1997/98. Ganesh Satish led Karnataka in his 13th Ranji Trophy. He had made his debut against Railways at Bangalore in 2008/09.

Ganesh Satish earned the distinction of becoming the youngest Karnataka captain at the age of 22 years 8 months and 9 days. The earlier record was held by TD Krishna – having led against Hyderabad at Hyderabad in 1954/55 at the age of 23 years and 20 days.

Shiv Sundar Das was leading Orissa for the second time against Karnataka. He was captain of Orissa in 1997/98 at Rourkela also. He has lost both the matches as captain.

Aditya B Sagar became the 267th Karnataka cricketer to make debut in Ranji Trophy and only the second Karnataka player to do so against Orissa. AK Raghu was the first Karnataka player to have debuted against Orissa at Bangalore in 1984/85.

Born at Hubli on 21.10.1988, Sagar turned in an impressive performance when he captured a wicket in his very first over in his debut game. He coaxed the Orissa opener N Behera to nick an edge to Uthappa in the last ball of his opening over. As if this was no fluke, he repeated this feat in the Orissa’s second innings also when he clean bowled Orissa captain Shiv Sundar Das – again of the last ball of his first over. This is only the second instance of a bowler capturing a wicket in each innings of his first over on debut in the history of Ranji Trophy matches pertaining to Karnataka. Only KS Ponnappa had performed the feat of taking a wicket in both the innings of a match on debut prior to Sagar’s feat (1/02 in 0.5 overs and 1/0 in 0.3 overs, against Andhra at Kurnool in 2001/02). (Additions to this list are welcome from the readers).

Shiv Sundar Das who should have led from the front as Orissa skipper, had a miserable time at the crease in both the innings – bagging a pair. Das faced just seven balls in the first innings and two balls in the second innings. He is the second Orissa batsman to be dismissed for a pair – the first being Gautam Gopal at Rourkela in 1997/98.

Shiv Sundar Das is the 60th batsman to collect a pair against Karnataka. His dismissal for a pair in this match provides the Tthe 62nd occasion of a batsman collecting a pair againt Karnataka. Ravi Achan and Mohd Ibrahim of Kerala are the only players to have bagged a Pair on two occasions against Karnataka.

Shiv Sundar Das, with a pair in this game, became the sixth captain to bag a Pair against Karnataka. Other captains who have bagged a Pair against Karnataka – A Babu of Kerala at Banglaore in 1963-64 : MN Ravikumar of Andhra at Bangalore in 1984-85 : S Mahadevan of Goa at Panaji in 1992-93 : SLV Raju of Hyderabad at Bijapur in 1994-95 : FV Rashid of Kerala at Telassery in 1994-95 and SS Das of Orissa at Bangalore in 2010-11

Dhiraj Singh became the first Orissa bowler to concede over 100 runs without taking a wicket against Karnataka, when he conceded 123 runs in 24 overs.

N Behera became the first Orissa batsman to be dismissed for a score in the 90s against Karnataka – to be exact 94 in the second innings. He became the 39th opposition player to be dismissed in the 90s. He is also the third opposition player to be dismissed on the score of 94 – the two others being GSN Raju of Andhra in 1956/57 and U Kaul of Punjab in 2010/11.

For N Behera this was the third occasion to have been stranded in the 90s. He had earlier made 97 against Jammu & Kashmir at Cuttack in 2006/07 and 95 against Tamilnadu at Sambalpur in 2009/10.

N Behera, who fought almost single handedly to help Orissa reach a modest score in the first innings, scored fifties in each innings. By scoring 83* and 94, Niranjan Behera provided the seventh instance of a batsman scoring a twin half centuries {of which one is a ninety} against Karnataka. Behera is the first Orissa player to perform such a feat. The following are the seven occasions – 55 and 91 by AG Ramsingh of Madras at Madras in 1939-40 : 66 and 94 by GSN Raju of Andhra at Guntur in 1956-57 : 89 and 95 by RD Parkar of Bombay at Bombay in 1971-72 : 69 and 92 of Madras at Madras in 1972-73 : 56 and 93 by D Vinay Kumar of Hyderabad at Secunderabad in 1999-00 : 64 and 90 by Khanolkar of Railways at Delhi in 2000-01 and 83 not out and 94 by N Behera of Orissa at Bangalore in 2010/11.

Niranjan Behera has now scored 22 fifty plus scores inclusive of one century in 48 Ranji Trophy matches.

Nataraj Behea scored 60 in the second innings. This was his third fifty plus scores including one century in just four Ranji Trophy matches.

CM Gautam recorded his highest individual score of 158 surpassing the previous identical scores of 108 against Maharashtra at Bangalore in 2008/09 and 108* against Bengal at Mysore in 2009/10. He was appearing in his 14th Ranji Trophy. 158 by Gautam was his fourth century and his first fifty plus score in 2010/11.

158 by Gautam is his third century as wicket keeper and the 25th century by a Karnataka wicket keeper. SMH Kirmani and VS Thilaknaidu jointly share the record for most number of centuries (five each) by a Karnataka wicket keeper.

Manish Pandey made 171, bringing up his fifth century in 17 Ranji Trophy matches and this was his first century in 2010/11 going ahead of the highest score of 55 in the last match against Haryana in November 2010. His best remains at 194 against UP at Meerut in 2009/10.

Abhimanyu Mithun scored a maiden fifty (63 of 89 balls) in his 12th Ranji Trophy match. His previous best was 39 against Delhi at Delhi in 2009/10.

Sunil Joshi scored zero in this game. This was his 1
1th duck in 112 matches. Only R Ananth and BS Chandrasekhar have scored more ducks (14 each) for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy.

Sunil Joshi proved that age does not matter as long as one performs, by taking 5-35 in 22 overs. Strangely he had failed to achieve this feat against Orissa earlier having played only one match against Orissa in 1997/98. 5-22 against Orissa by Joshi is his best against this team improving upon his previous best of 3/36 at Rourkela in 1997/98.

5-22 by Joshi was his 26th five wicket haul in his 112th match, besides five occasions of 10WM or more in a match. Joshi has now a tally of 467 wickets.

The Orissa openers N Behera and skipper SS Das scored ducks in the first innings providing the fifth occasion of both the openers from the opponent team scoring ducks. The five instances are as under – PS Moses and AR Shenoy of Kerala at Bangalore in 1963-64 : B Ramprasad and T Sridhar of Andhra at Vijayawada in 1967-68 : S Suresh and AR Kapoor of Tamilnadu vs Bangalore in 1999-00 : SO Sharma and Sunny Singh of Haryana at Mysore in 2006/07 and N Behera and SS Das of Orissa at Banglaore in 2010/11

Orissa batsmen accounted for five ducks in the first innings. This provided the ninth occasion of five or more opposing batsmen scoring ducks in an innings. The last such occasion was by Uttar Pradesh at Bangalore in 2009/10. The following are the nine such instances – Six ducks by Kerala batsmen at Banglaore in 1963-64 : six ducks by Kerala batsmen at Bijapur in 1969-70 : five ducks by Kerala batsmen at Banglaore in 1965-66 : five ducks by Punjab batsmen at Bangalore in 1981-82 : five ducks by Baroda batsmen at Baroda in 1982-83 : five ducks by Goa batsmen at Bhadravathi in 1985-86 : five ducks by Bombay batsmen at Bangalore in 1993-94 : five ducks by Uttar Pradesh batsmen at Bangalore in 2009-10 and five ducks by Orissa batsmen at Bangalore in 2010-11

MK Pandey and CM Gautam who saved Karnataka when it was tottering at 5/54 and were instrumental in carving out victory in the end, were involved in a record breaking partnership for the sixth wicket. They added 328 runs for the sixth wicket breaking the previous record of 238 runs held by KA Jeshwant and RS Dravid against Maharashtra at Pune in 1990/91. This is the fourth century partnership of over 300 runs and the third best for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy. The list of 300 or more runs partnerships for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy reads as under – 451* runs for the first wicket between RMH Binny and Sanjay Desai at Chickmagalur in 1977-78 : 336 runs for the fifth wicket between SMH Kirmani and K Jeswanth vs Tamilnadu at Coimbatore in 1990-91 : 328 runs for the sixth wicket between MK Pandey and CM Gautam vs Orissa at Bangalore in 2010-11 amd 324 runs for the first wicket between RV Uthappa and RL Barrington vs Madhya Pradesh at Bangalore in 2004-05

Orissa recorded its highest innings total against Karnataka by scoring 279 in the second iinnings. Its previous best was 276 at Bangalore in its first encounter against Karnataka in 1984/85.

Karnataka recorded a score of 503 – its first 500 plus score this season. 503 by Karnataka is the 32nd occasion when Karnataka has scored over 500 runs in an innings. However, this is the first time that Karnataka has crossed this figure against Orissa. The previous highest total against Orissa was 473+16 at Bangalore in 1984/85.

Karnataka tasted innings victory for the first time against Orissa and for the 63rd time in all in 360 matches. Just for the record, Kerala has been at the receiving end most times against Karnataka, having suffered 22 innings defeats.

Karnataka’s victory against Orissa at Bangalore is 163rd win for Karnataka. Playing Record after the match against Orissa on 27.11.2010:

This article is penned by Sri C Keshavamaurthy

Karnataka, fresh from their inaugural win in the opening fixture against Punjab in the 2010/11 season suffered a set back at the hands of the modest Haryana team and managed just one point, conceding the first innings lead to Haryana.

Karnataka’s first innings contained a solitary 50 by skipper R Vinaykumar, which was his second fifty in 46 matches. He narrowly missed to go past his highest individual score of 51* (vs Punjab at Mysore in 2009/10)

Amit Verma scored 103* in the second innings which is his third century in 13 Ranji Trophy matches. He is the fourth Karnataka bassman to score a century against Haryana. Others are – BP Patel – 157 at Bangalore in 1979-80 : Vijay Bharadwaj – 175 at Bangalore in 1998-99 and RV Uthappa – 108 at Mysore in 2006-07

Hemang Badani, the former Tamilnadu player, playing for Haryana this season top scored with 88 runs with which Haryana obtaind the crucial first innings lead. This was his 41st fifty plus score (inclusive of 9 centuries) in his 66th Ranji Trophy match. This was also his highest individual score for Haryana nosing ahead of the previous best of 79 made against Baroda at Rohtak in November 2010. His career beat in Ranji Trophy is 164 against Hyderbad at Secunderabad in 1996/97.

Joginder Sharma and Sanjay Badhwar, who were the wreckers in chief for Haryana, took 5-66 and 5-56 respectively.

5-66 by Joginder Sharma was his 14th five wicket haul (apart from five ten wicket hauls) in his 44th Ranji Trophy match.

Just for the record, Joginder Sharma had taken 11 wickets and scored 81 runs in his debut Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh at Rohtak in 2002/03.

Joginder Sharma is best remembered as the bowler who dismissed Misbah ul Haq in the final of the inaugural World Cup Twenty-20. Ironically, he has never appeared for India again.

5-56 by Sanjay Badhwar was his fifth five wicket haul in 24 Ranji Trophy matches.

After Rajinder Goel had taken 6/55 in the first ever Ranji match between Haryana and Karnataka in 1979/80, no ohter bowler from Haryana had captured five wickets in an innings against Karnataka, till Joginder Sharma and Sanjay Badhwar captured five wickets in an innings. This is the first time that two bowlers have shared ten wickets in an an innings in the match for Haryana against Karnataka.

The feat of sharing five wickets equally in an innings by Joginder and Badhwar, provides the 16th occasion of bolwers sharing the ten wickets equally in an innings.

Ranji Trophy 2010-11 : Karnataka vs Punjab : Karnataka scripts outright win

Ranji Trophy 2010-11 : Karnataka vs Punjab : Karnataka scripts outright win

Highlights of Karnataka/Punjab Ranji Trophy at Mohali, Chandigargh : 10th to 13th November,2010 : Karnataka won by eight wickets.

This article is prepared by Sri C Keshavamurthy, a reputed Cricket Statistician in Domestic Cricket

Karnataka started the Ranji Trophy season 2010/11 on a happy note by registering a comprehensive eight victory over Punjab. This was Karnataka’s 162nd win in 358 matches (lost 56 and drawn 140). Punjab surrendered to Karnataka for the fourth time in its sixth encounter. It is yet to register an outright win and has drawn the other two matches – only once it has gained first innings lead at Mohali in 1994/95. The previous three victories by Karnataka have come as under – 1981-82 at Bangalore – won by 167 runs : 1997-98 at Bangalore – won by 262 runs : 1998-99 at Amritsar – won by seven wickets

Karnataka had last met Punjab in the quarter final at Mysore in 2009/10 which had ended in a draw – with Karnataka qualifying for the semi final on 1st innings lead.

R Vinaykumar became the 45th cricketer to lead Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy – in a span of 358 matches. By a coincidence – he was playing in his 45th match. He is the sixth captain to lead Karnataka against Punjab. Others are – GR Viswanath (1981/82), KA Jeshwanth (1994/95), A Kumble (1997/98), SB Somasundar (1998/99) and RS Dravid (2009/10).

The opposition skipper P Dharmani was leading Punjab against Karnataka for the second time – having first led at Mysore in 2009/10. Overall, this was Punjab’s 35th outright defeat in its 252nd match, having won 89 and drawn 128.

Robin Uthappa scored 149 in this match of 182 balls. This was his first century against Punjab and his ninth century in his 43rd Ranji Trophy career This was also his highest individual score against Punjab – his previous best being 91 at Mysore in 2009/10. RV Uthappa in accomplishing his three figure innings against Punjab emulated the feat of VS Thilaknaidu (125 at Amritsar in 1998/99) and MK Pandey (115 at Mysore in 2009/10) to become the third Karnataka player to register a hundred against Punjab. The nine centuries scored by Uthappa are listed below

Incidentally Punjab’s batsmen is yet to register a century against Karnataka. Wicket Keeper U Kaul came very near to achieving it but fell six short of the coveted mark. He became the second Punjab player to be dismissed in the nineties against Karnataka. The record for the highest individual score against Karnataka by a Punjab player stands to the credit of Krishna Mohan who was dismissed for 98 at Mohali in 1994/95.

94 by Kaul was his third consecutive 50 plus score against Karnataka, he had earlier scored 68 and 86 in the quarter final at Mysore in 2009/10. He failed to achieve his fourth successive fifty against Karnataka when he was given out for 43 in his 2nd innings at Mohali. Kaul is also the only Punjab player to score register two or more fifties against Karnataka, in a total of 14 fifty plus scores by Punjab batsmen against Karnataka till date.

By registering 94, Kaul became the 38th opposition player and the second Punjab player after Krishna Mohan to score 90s against Karnataka.

By winning the match, R Vinay Kumar achieved the distinction of becoming the 20th Karnataka captain to register a victory on his first appearance as skipper

The last occasion in which a Ka
rnataka player had accomplished such a rare honour was in 2006/07 when KT Yeregoud had won his debut match as Captain against Haryana at Mysore in 2006-07
