DPMD Jayawardene’s 108 not out represent the 26^th hundred of his test career which puts him on par with GS Sobers of West Indies and R Dravid of India who also have 26 hundreds to their credit. DPMD Jayawardene became the 12^th batsman in the annals of test cricket to register 26 or more test hundreds. SR Tendukar of India {42}, RT Ponting of Australia {38}, SM Gavaskar of India {34}, BC Lara of West Indies {34}, SR Waugh of Australia {32}, JH Kallis of South Africa {31}, ML Hayden of Australia {30}, DG Bradman of Australia {29} and AR Border of Australia {27} are the nine batsmen who have scored more hundreds than R Dravid, DPMD Jayawardene and GS Sobers.

DPMD Jayawardene’s 108 not out represent the 23^rd hundred of his test career while batting at number four. With the hundred in this test, he went past JH Kallis’s 22 hundreds while batting at number four. Only SR Tendulkar {37} and BC Lara {24} have scored more hundreds than DPMD Jayawaredne while batting at number four. It is interesting to note that only these four batsmen have registered 20 plus hundreds while batting at number four.

DPMD Jayawardene has registered 45 fifties {23 hundreds and 22 half centuries} while batting number four. He remains the only batsman who has scored more hundreds than fifties while batting at number four. With 45 fifties to his credit, he now stands sixth in the list of batsman who have scored 45 plus fifties while batting at number four. The other five are SR Tendulkar of India {81 fifties – 37 hundreds and 44 half centuries}, BC Lara of West Indies {55 fifties – 24 hundreds and 31 half centuries}, ME Waugh of Australia {55 fifties – 16 hundreds and 39 half centuries}, JH Kallis of South Africa {52 fifties – 22 hundreds and 30 half centuries} and Javed Miandad of Pakistan {50 fifties – 19 hundreds and 31 half centuries}.

TT Samaraweera with his 82 not out at the end of the first day’s play has an aggregate of 818 test runs in the calendar year 2009. These aggregate places him second in the list of batsmen who have most runs in the calendar year 2009, the first in the list being AJ Strauss of England who has 941 runs to his credit. AJ Strauss and TT Samaraweera are the only two batsmen to aggregate 800 plus test runs in the calendar year 2009.

TM Dilshan and DPMD Jayawardene completed 600 test runs in the calendar year 2009. TM Dilshan reached the land mark when he was on 28 during his knock of 92 in this innings, while DPMD Jayawardene reached the land mark when he was on 108. They have an aggregate of 664 and 600 runs respectively during the calendar year 2009. At the end of the first day’s play in this test, as many as, twelve batsmen have an aggregate of 600 plus runs during the calendar year 2009.

TT Samaraweera at the end of the first day’s play has hit 116 boundary fours in the calendar year 2009. He needs one more boundary four to equal 117 boundary fours hit by AJ Strauss in the calendar year 2009.

TM Dilshan earned the distinction of scoring the fastest fifty by a Sri Lankan batsman when he scored the fifty in 30 balls. He scored 92 in this innings.

The auction of 48 cricketers took place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, B’lore, on 14^th August 2009. Robin Uthappa was brought by B’lore Brigaders for Rs.325,000.00 which was the highest bid for a cricketer under KPL. He was followed by STR Binny for an amount of Rs.320,000.00.

It may be remembered that STR Binny left the main stream of cricket and had joined Indian Cricket League hosted by Satish Chandra of Zee TV two years back. ICL was not recognized by BCCI and could not hold its regular matches due to recession world over and BCCI decided to provide amnesty in May 2009 to the Cricketers and Officials to those who joined ICL. Due to this amnesty many who had left the main stream are back into the main stream.
