Nikin Jose collected a pair in the fifth round of Ranji Trophy match of the ongoing season against Railways at Surat to provide the 43rd occasion of a Karnataka batsman such a dubious distinction
He also became the third Karnataka captain to get a pair in a Ranji Trophy match after PV Shashkanth and Mayank Agarwal. PV Shashikant collected a pair against Kerala in 1996-97. Mayank Agarwal collected a pair against Punjab at Hubli earlier this season. Nikin Jose collected a pair in his first outing as captain for Karnataka. He was deputizing for the unwell Mayank Agarwal against Railways at Surat in the fifth round of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24.Nikin Jose collected a first ball duck in the first innings. Incidentally PV Shahshikant is the Head Coach of the Karnataka contingent.
The information is provided to me by the veteran Cricket Statistician Sri C Keshavamurthy who has specialized in Indian domestic cricket, when Mayank Agarwal collected a pair. The information has been updated after Nikin Jose achieved the dubious distinction.
Seshakumar (Sesha) K. Aragam passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the age of 93 surrounded by his close family.
Sesha was born to Krishna Rao and Gouramma Aragam on July 18, 1930 in Bangalore, India, the eldest of nine children. He was married to the late Prema Aragam for 51 years until her passing in 2012.
Sesha studied at B.M.S. College of Engineering in Bangalore and received his Masters in Business Administration from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. His professional journey spanned 48 years, including managerial roles with Hindusthan Machine Tools and Central Machine Tools. His work took him to places near and far, including a one-year collaboration in Paris, France, for which he learned both French and German. He immigrated to the United States in 1981 where he worked for IBM, MIT, and served as CEO for VNS America, a computer hardware company in Marlboro, MA.
While an engineer by profession, Sesha’s true passions were in sports and the arts. He played both cricket and softball in college and was an active member of the Mysore State Cricket Association serving as umpire and official scorer for various league and international matches.
A talented painter, he was the premier Rangoli (colored sand) artist in Bangalore, creating large portraits of prominent scientists such as Albert Einstein for the city’s Science Exhibition. A versatile actor, he took lead roles in several stage productions in Bangalore like MacBeth, My Three Angels, and The Teahouse of the August Moon. In his later years, Sesha continued to draw and paint whenever inspiration struck. In addition, he actively nurtured a passion for the arts among those around him, often inspiring them to explore their own creative talents.
Sesha shared a close bond with his siblings and is survived by Lakshmi (late Nagaraj), Subramanya, Saroja, Padma (late Satya), Nagabhushana, Gopalakrishna (Jayashri), and Uma (Krishna), and many adoring nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his next born, Parvati as an infant and loving youngest sister Pushpavalli (Jagannath).
A funeral service to honor Sesha’s life was held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Rural Cemetery, 180 Grove Street, Worcester, MA at 11:00 AM, followed by cremation.
India’s first ever test victory recalled after seventy two years
February 10, 1952 happens to be the red letter day in the history of Indian cricket. It was on this day, India registered its first test victory in tests. India trounced England by an innings and eight runs. The test was played at Madras on February 6, 8, 9 and 10, 1952. India was led by VS Hazare while DB Carr captained England. BJ Mohoni and MG Vijayasarathy officiated this test as umpires.
This is what 1951-52 edition of Indian Cricket wrote about this memorable test match. {Page NO 151}
A Memorable match was this, in which India gained their first Test victory. The handsome margin of their victory accurately reflects the disparity between the two teams. It was the result of a memorable piece of bowling by Mankad, who claimed twelve wickets for 108 runs. Apart from Graveney and Robertson the English batsmen had no counter to his acute spin and cunning flight. He received good support from the field, especially Sen behind the wicket. India were able to raise a big total thanks mainly to Roy and Umrigar both of whom scored centuries. Roy’s was an immaculate effort, while Umrigar’s was more restrained than is customary with him. With Phadkar the latter added 104 runs for the sixth wicket. England collapsed in the last innings against Mankad again and Ghulam Ahmed. When Statham lifted the former into the safe hands of Gopinath at long-on, India had secured a historic victory.
India was granted test status inn 1932 and had played its first test against England on June 25, 26 and 27 of 1932.
This is what Bill Frindall notes/comments on this memorable test in his book “The Wisden Book of Test Cricket – Volume 1 {1876 to 1977}”
After waiting for almost 20 years India gained a most emphatic test victory in their 25th Test Match. Mankad’s innings and match analysis were the best in any Test at Madras and remain the records for India against England. Umrigar was omitted from the selection in favout of Adhikari. When the latter damaged his wrist in a fall the reinstated Umrigar seized a last opportunity to score his maiden test hundred. Because of the death of King George VI on 6 February the following day was made the rest day.
{Mankad’s match figures of 12 for 108 was bettered by Narendra Hirwani who took 16 for 136 at Madras against West Indies in Jan 1988}
Today is 10th February 2024. Hence the recall of India’s first ever test victory after 72 years
