Bangladesh wins the second test against West Indies

West Indies vs Bangladesh : Second Test at St.George’s, Grenada : Start Date ; 17.07.09 : Bangladesh won by four wickets.

DM Richards and TM Dowlin scored their first test fifties when he made 69 and 95 respectively in the first innings of this test.

TM Dowlin’s 95 represent the 110th occasion of a West Indies batsman registering ninety in a test innings against various oppositions.

KAJ Roach captured six wickets conceding 48 runs in the first innings providing the 89th occasion of a West Indian bowler capturing six or more wickets in a test innings against various oppositions.

RA Austin was dismissed “hit wicket” in the first innings of West Indies providing the 26th occasion of a West Indies batsman dismissed hit wicket against various oppositions. This hit wicket dismissal also provide the 151st occasion of a hit wicket dismissal in the annals of test cricket.

KAJ Roach’s 6 for 48 represent the third occasion of a West Indian bowler capturing six or more wickets in a test innings against Sri Lanka. The other two bowlers are – JJC Lawson {6.5-5-3-6 at Dhaka in Dec 2002} and PT Collins {18.0-3-53-6 at Kingston in Jun 2004}.

DJ Sammy’s 5 for 55 in the second innings represent the sixth occasion of a West Indies bowler capturing five or more wickets against Bangladesh. DJ Sammy had captured 5 for 70 at Kingstown in the previous test.

PT Collins and DJ Sammy are the two West Indian bowlers who have captured five or more wickets against Bangladesh on two occasions. DJ Sammy’s 5 for 55 in the second innings of this test represent the 21st occasion of a bowler capturing 5 for 55 in the annals of test cricket. DJ Sammy is the fourth Wet Indian bowler to have figures of 5 for 55 in a test innings. The other three are –HH Johnson against England at Kingston in Mar 1948, J Garner against England at Birmingham in Jun 1984 and CL Ambrose against Australia at Melbourne in Dec 1996.

DE Bernard’s 69 in West Indies’ second innings represent his third test fifty and also his highest individual score. In the first test of the on going series he had scored twin fifties – 53 not out and 52.

Shakib Al Hasan on his first captaincy assignment scored 96 not out and captured five wickets. He became the third captain in the world to achieve the feat of scoring a fifty and capture five wickets on captaincy debut. Other two are FS Jackson of England and Imran Khan of Pakistan. FS Jackson scored 82 not out and captured five for 52 against Australia at Nottingham in May 1905, while Imran Khan of Pakistan scored 65 and captured 7 for 52 against England at Birmingham in Jul 1982.

Shakib Al Hasan became the 18th captain in the annals of test cricket to register a fifty and capture five or more wickets in a test match.
