HM Amla and JH Kallis when they added 340 runs for the third wicket against at Nagpur against India, it was their second association of 300 runs partnership in a test innings, the first being the 330 runs atand against New Zealand at Jo’burg in Nov 2007.

HM Amla-JH Kallis pair became the sixth pair to forge 300 plus runs partnerships on two or more occasions involving the same pair of batsmen in the annals of test cricket. India capped S Badrinath and WP Saha for this test. They became the 261st and 262nd cricketers to represent India in tests.

S Badrinath and WP Saha became the 11th and 12th Indian cricketers to make their test debut against South Africa. Others are PK Amre at Durban in Nov 1992, A Jadeja at Durban in Nov 1992, VVS Laxman at Ahmedabad in Nov 1996, D Ganesh at Cape Town in Jan 1997, W Jaffer at Mumbai in Feb 2000, M Kartik at Mumbai in Feb 2000, N Chopra at Bangalore in Mar 2000, M Kaif at Bangalore in Mar 2000, D Dasgupta at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001 and V Sehwag at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001.

JH Kallis registered his 34th test hundred when he made 159 not out in the first innings of this test, while HM Amla registered his eighth test hundred with his score of 115 not out in the first innings of this test.

He became the first South African batsman to amass 1000 runs against India and the 33rd batsman in the annals of test cricket to aggregate 1000 plus runs against India.

JH Kallis scored 159 not out at the end of the first day in the first innings of this test. He became the seventh South African batsman to register 150 plus runs against India. Others are DJ Cullinan {153* at Kolkata in Nov 1996}, HH Gibbs {196 at P Elizabeth in Nov 2001}, AJ Hall {163 at Kanpur in Nov 2004}, HM Amla {159 at Chennai in Mar 2008}, ND McKenzie {155* at Chennai in Mar 2008} and AB de Villers {217* at Nagpur in Feb 2010}.

Nagpur test is the ninth test for GC Smith as captain against India. He wrested the record for most tests as captain against India from WJ Cronje who had led South Africa in eight tests against India.

GC Smith rewrote the record for most captaincy assignments in India-South Africa test series by captaining South Africa in his ninth test. WJ Cronje and SR Tendulkar have led their respective teams in eight tests.

GC Smith and WJ Cronje have played 15 innings as captain against India. GC Smith went past WJ Cronje at Nagpur by playing his 16th innings as captain against India.

First test at Nagpur would be the 21st test for SR Tendulkar against South Africa. He equalled the Indian record for most appearances against South Africa held by A Kumble who had played 21 tests.

Prior to the start of the series, JH Kallis has played 11 tests against India. Nagpur test is his 12th against India and now he shares the record of most test appearances against India with SM Pollock who has also played 12 tests. JH Kallis went past WJ Crone and AA Donlad who have played 11 tests against India.

JH Kallis’s 159 not out in this test represent his third hundred against India. The other two are -121 at Kolkata in Nov 2004, 132 at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008. He became the second South African batsman to score three hundreds against India. Other batsman is G Kirsten who also has three centuries to his credit against India – 102 and 133 at Kolkata in Nov 1996 and 103 at Cape Town in Jan 1997.

JH Kallis’s 159 not out in this test represent his highest score against India. The previous best was 132 at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008.

Prior to the start of the series, AC Hudson and JH Kallis shared the South African record for most fifties against India. Both have registered seven fifties. JH Kallis’s 159 not out gave him his eighth fifty and also the record for most fifties by a South African batsman against India

The first test Nagpur in this India-South Africa test series witnessed for the first time, rival batsmen with 10000 plus runs. Prior to the start of this test, SR Tendulkar has an aggregate of 13234 runs and JH Kallis has an aggregate of 10640 runs for India and South Africa respectively. JH Kallis extened his run aggregate to 10799 at the end of the first day of this test

JH Kallis’s 34th hundred in this game put him on par with SM Gavaskar and BC Lara who have also scored 34 test hundreds. Only SR Tendulkar (45} and RT Ponting {39}} are ahead of JH Kallis. SM Gavaskar and BC Lara have retired from test cricket.
