SECOND EDTION OF IPL HELD IN SOUTH AFRICA

The tournament was shifted to South Africa as Indian Government refused to provide Security for the cricketers participating in the League in view of the General Elections in the country.

The finalists of 2009 edition – Royal Challengers, Bangalore and Deccan Chargers had finished at number seven and eight in the previous edition of Indian Premier League 2008. Deccan Chargers won the IPL 2009 by beating Royal Challengers, Bangalore by six runs at Johannesburg on 24.05.09

TEAM RECORDS

26 matches were won by runs margin, 30 games were won by wickets margin, two games were abandoned due to rain and were considered as no result games and one game was tied which was decided on one over eliminator.

Five games were won by 75 plus runs margin and six games were won by single digit runs margin. One game was won by without losing a wicket and two games were won by nine wickets margin

Jaipur’s 211 for 4 against Mohali at Durban on 05.05.09 was the highest team total recorded by a team batting first, while Chennai’s 188 for 3 against Kolkata at Centurion on 18.05.09 remained the highest total by a team batting second.

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARDS

Delhi bagged the most Man of the Match Awards – Ten and was followed by Bangalore which bagged nine awards. Chennai {08}, Hyderabad {08}, Mohali {08}, Jaipur {06}, Mumbai {05} and Kolkata {03} were the other teams which have bagged the MoM Awards.

YK Pathan of Jaipur bagged the most MoM awards- three. As many as ten captains bagged the MoM awards and six wicket keepers bagged MoM awards. There were three occasions when captain-cum-wicket keepers bagged the MoM awards. Yuvraj Singh and A Kumble were the two cricketers to bag MoM award when their team lost the game

BATTING RECORDS

IPL Second edition witnessed as many as 69 fifties scored by batsmen. There were 14 occasions of batsmen scoring fifties while batting at number one and 18 occasions of batsmen scoring fifties while batting at number two.

The break up of 69 fifites team wise read thus – Bangalore {08}, Chennai {10}, Delhi {11}, Hyderabad {09}, Jaipur {05}, Kolkata {06}, Mohali {07} and Mumbai {13}. Mumbai batsmen scored most fifties {13} in the tournament.

CH Gayle registered his 40th one day half century and 59th one day fifty when he scored 57 in this game, while SC Chanderpaul’s 70 in this game represents his 56th one day half century and 66th one day fifty.

SW Masakadza on his debut returned with figures of 3 for 36 providing the best figures by a Zimbabwe debutant bowler against West Indies. It is interesting to note that no Zimbabwean debutant has taken a wicket against West Indies on his debut. The only bowler who chanced his arms was AM Blignaut and had figures of none for 26. TEAM RECORDS

Of the 59 matches played in the first edition, only one match was abandoned, 24 matches were won by runs margin and 34 matches were won by wickets margin. Two matches were won by 100 plus runs margin and one game was won without losing a wicket. As many as seven games were won by nine wickets margin.

There were 33 instances of a team inserting the opposition. Of these 33 instances, there were 19 occasions of a team winning the game and 14 occasions of losing a game. There were 25 instances of teams batting first after winning the toss. Of these 25 instances, on nine occasions teams have won the game and on 16 occasions teams have lost the game.

The IPL 2008 witnessed as many as 13 matches producing a result in the last over of the match and three matches were decided on the last ball of the match.

On eleven occasions, teams have scored 200 plus runs. The highest team total was registered was 240-5 by Chennai against Mohali at Mohali on 19.04.08. There were three instances of teams registering less than 100 runs. The lowest team total was 67 all out by Kolkata against Mumbai at Mumbai on 16.05.08.

There were 12 instances of team losing all the ten wickets {all out}. Delhi was all out on three occasions – the most occasions in IPL 2008.

20 instances of two or more fifties were registered and there were eleven instances of a batsman registering exact two fifties were witnessed. There were just two instances of four fifties in a match. Hyderabad vs Mohali at Mohali on 23.05.08 and Jaipur vs Chennai at Chennai – were the two matches which witnessed four fifties.

Shaun Marsh of Mohali was the only batsman who scored six fifties in the first edition of IPL, while Gautham Gambhir of Delhi came up with five fifties. S Dhawan of Delhi, AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad, RG Sharma of Hyderabad, KC Sangakkara of Mohali, SR Watson of Jaipur and YK Pathan of Jaipur were the batsman who registered four fifties in the competition.

62 instances of opening batsmen registering fifties, 16 instances of captains registering fifties and 18 instances of wicket keepers scoring fifties were witnessed in the first edition of IPL. AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad remained the lone wicket keeper to score a hundred – 109 not out for Hyerabad against Mumbai at Mum-DYP on 27.04.08. Virender Sehwag {94 vs for Delhi against Hyderabad at Hyderabad on 22.04.08} and GC Smith {91 for Jaipur against Chennai at Chennai on 24.05.08} are the only two opening batsmen who scored nineties.

Shaun Marsh of Mohali, Gautam Gambhir of Delhi and Adam Gilchrist of Hyderabad registered six, five and four fifties respectively while opening the innings. Shaun Marsh’s six fifties remain the most fifties scored by a batsman in the first edition of IPL.

AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad and Kumar Sangakkara of Mohali shared the record for most fifties by wicket keeper batsmen – each scoring four fifties. Kumar Sangakkara with four half centuries to his credit has the record for most half centuries by a wicket keeper batsman in the tournament.

Andrew Symond’s 117 not out for Hyderabad against Jaipur at Hyderabad on 24.04.08 remains the only hundred in the losing cause in the first edition of IPL. As many as 36 fifties were in a losing cause and there were seven instances of two batsmen registering fifties going in vain. Hyderabad and Bangalore saw ten and seven instances of its batsmen’s fifties in a losing cause. Rohit Sharma of Hyderabad had three of his fifties in a losing cause, while Rahul Dravid of Bangalore, Y Venugopala Rao of Hyderabad, Adam Gilchrist of Hyderabad and Kumar Sangakkara of Mohali saw two of their fifties in a losing cause. IPL first edition witnessed seven fifties by captains and eight fifties by wicket keeper batsmen in a losing cause. Rahul Dravid amongst captains, Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara amogns the wicket keeper batsmen saw two fifties scored by them going in vain.

86 instances of a batsman’s run out were witnessed with Bangalore batsmen having the record of most run outs – 17 followed by Jaipur {14}. As many as six batsmen were run out after scoring fifties, while seven batsmen were dismissed runout without scoring. Three batsmen were run out without facing a ball. Praveen Kumar of Bangalore and YK Pathan of Jaipur share the record for most run out – four – in the IPL first edition. Yuvraj Singh of Mohali remains the only captain who was run out on three occasions.

Five Mumbai batsmen were run out in an innings in the match between Mumbai and Mohali at Mumbai on 21.05.08. This instance is a record for a match also. Luke Ronchi of Bangalore and Kamran Akmal of Jaipur share the record of most run outs – two each – for a wicket keeper batsman.

As many as 12 batsmen were dismissed stumped, with wicket keeper Kamran Akmal representing Hyderabad effecting more stumping dismissals {04} in the IPL.

Only two instances of batsman dismissed hit wicket was witnessed – MA Khote of Mumbai and Misbah-ul-Huq of Bangalore were the batsmen and the bowler to be credited with these wickets was the same – Sreesanth of Mohali.

There were 67 instances of batsmen failing to open their account. Team wise break up reads thus – Bangalore {14}, Chennai {07}, Delhi {07}, Hyderabad {10}, Jaipur {05}, Kolkata {06}, Mohali {08} and Mumbai {10}. Bangalore had the most zeroes in the tournament – 14. Bangalore vs Mohali at Bangalore on 05.05.08 saw five Bangalore batsmen failing to open their account – a a record for most zeroes in an innings in IPL. A Mukund of Chennai collected his first ball duck on his T20 debut against Jaipur at Chennai on 24.05.08. PP Ojha of Hyderabad, A Nel of Mumbai and Sanjay Bangar of Hyderabad were dismissed for zero without facing a delivery. There were eight instances of captains and only one instance of a wicket keeper batsman failing to open their account in the tournament. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag bagged two zeroes while leading Bangalore and Delhi respectively. M Rawat of Jaipur was the lone wicket keeper batsman to collect a zero in the match against Bangalore at Bangalore on 26.04.08. Of the 67 instances, 36 instances of a batsmen collecting the first ball duck were witnessed.

SIXES SCORED BY BATSMEN

A total of 622 sixes were scored in the tournament. Three matches saw 20 plus sixes – Chennai vs Mohali at Mohali on 19.04.08 {25}, Jaipur vs Hyderabad at Hyderabad on 24.04.08 {23} and Mohali vs Jaipur at Mohali on 28.05.08 {22}. Sanath Jayasuriya of Mumbai with 31 sixes to his credit has the record for most sixes by batsman in the tournament. SE Marsh of Mohali {26}, Yousuf Pathan of Jaipur {25} and V Sehwag of Delhi {21} are the other two batsmen who scored 20 plus sixes.

FIFTY PLUS RUNS PARTNERSHIPS

As many as 93 partnerships of 50 plus runs were registered in the tournament. Team wise break up reads thus – Bangalore {05}, Chennai {16}, Delhi {09}, Hyderabad {10}, Jaipur {19}, Kolkata {08}, Mohali {16} and Mumbai {10}. Jaipur batsmen posted the most fifty plus stands in the tournament – 19, Wicket wise break up reads thus – First {23}, Second {22}, Third {18}, Fourth {18}, Fifth {08}, Sixth {03} and seventh {01}.

Greame Smith of Jaipur was one of the partner in ten fifty plus partnerships in the tournament – a record for the IPL. Shaun Marsh with nine fifty plus partnerships to his credit was close behind. Gautam Gambhir {06}, AC Gilchrist {05} and ST Jayasuriya {05} are the other batsmen with five or more fifty run stands to their credit in the tournament.

ST Jayasuriya – SR Tendulkar of Mumbai and GC Smith – SA Asnodkar of Jaipur share the record with four instances each for the same pair-same wicket fifty plus runs stands in the tournament.

21 three figure partnerships were registered in the tournament. 155 runs unfinished stand for the first wicket between Adam Gilchrist and VVS Laxman for Hyderabad against Mumbai remained the highest partnership in the tournament.

Gautam Gambhir and Shikar Dhawan were concerned in a century partnership on three occasions – a record for the same pair adding fifty plus runs in the tournament.

BOWLING RECORDS

There were 12 instances of bowlers conceding 50 plus runs in the tournament. Most expensive figures was 4.0-0-59-1 by RP Singh of Hyderabad against Kolkata at Hyderabad on 11.05.08. Of the 12 instances, four instances were by Delhi bowlers – most by any team in the tournament. Chennai, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Mohali had two instances of conceding 50 plus runs.

Munaf Patel of Jaipur and RP Singh of Hyderabad were the two bowlers who conceded 50 plus runs on two occasions.

Six bowlers went wicketless conceding 50 plus runs. VRV Singh’s 4.0-0-56-0 for Mohali against Mumbai on 21.05.08 remained the most expensive figures in this category. RP Singh of Hyderabad and Mohd Asif of Delhi conceded 50 plus runs providing the lone instance of rival bowelrs conceding 50 plus runs in the tournament. These two bowlers suffered the ignominy of going wicketless conceding 50 plus runs, providing the lone such instance in the tournament.

SR Watson of Hyderabad {52 and 3-10 against Delhi at Mumbai on 30.05.08} and Yousuf Pathan of Jaipur {56 and 3-22 against Mohali at Mum-DYP} provided the all round performance of a half century coupled with three wickets in the tournament.

Parthiv Patel of Chenni with his performance of three dismissals {all catches} and 51 not out remained the only wicket keeper with an all round performance of a half century and three catches in the tournament

LR Shukla of Kolkata with figures of 0.5-0-6-3 against Delhi at Kolkata remained the only bowler in the tournament to capture three wickets conceding single digit runs.

The tournament witnesses 16 instances of a bowler bowling a maiden over in his four over quota. M Gony of Chennai had the distinction of bowling maiden overs on three occasions. G McGrath of Delhi and Irfan Pathan of Mohali had the distinction of bowling maiden overs on two occasions.

G McGrath of Delhi, SK Warne of Jaipur, Praveen Kumar of Bangalore, Munaf Patel of Jaipur and Umar Gul of Kolkata earned the distinction of bowling a wicket maiden over in the tournament. The last named – Umar Gul of Kolkata – remained the only bowler in the tournament to capture two wickets while bowling a maiden over. He achieved this distinction against Jaipur at Kolkata on 20.05.08

The tournament witnessed 12 instances of a bowler capturing four or more wickets, which comprised of one six wicket haul, two five wickets haul and eight exact four wicket haul. Sohail Tanvir of Jaipur returned with best figures of the tournament with 4.0-0-14-6 against Chennai at Jaipur on 04.05.08. He also remained the only bowler to capture four or more wickets on two occasions, the other being his 4.0-0-14-4 against Mumbai at Jaipur on 26.05.08

M Morkel of Chennai with figures of 4.0-0-32-4 against Bangalore at Chennai on 21.05.08 remained the only bowler in the tournament to witness his four wicket haul in a losing cause. Bangalore won this game by 14 runs.

EXTRAS

He remains the only bowler to concede 20 plus sixes. SK Warne of Jaipur {18}, SK Trivedi of Jaipur {17}, JR Hopes of Mohali {17}, Yousuf Pathan of Jaipur {16}, Praveen Kumar of Bangalore, M Gony of Chennai {16} and Muralitharan of Chennai {15} are the other bowlers who have conceded 15 plus sixes in the tournament. Mohali remains the only team in the tournament which had three bowlers conceding 15 plus sixes

MOHALI’S DUAL DISTINCTION

Mohali holds the record for most sixes scored by a team {95} and also most sixes conceded by a team {93} in the tournament.

HAT TRICKS

L Balaji of Chennai {against Mohali at Chennai on 10.05.08}, Amit Mishra of Delhi {against Hyderabad at Delhi on 15.05.08} and M Ntini of Chennai {against Kolkata at Kolkata on 17.05.08} are the three bowlers who performed Hat trick in the tournament. L Balaji and Amit Mishra achieved the feat in the same over while M Ntini’s feat was spread across two overs

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARDS

All the matches carried the Man of the Match Awards with the exception of one match – Delhi vs Kolkata at Kolkata on 22.05.08 which was abandoned due to rain. Team wise break up of Man of the Match awards read thus – Bangalore {05}, Chennai {10}, Delhi {06}, Hyderabad {02}, Jaipur {12}, Kolkata {06}, Mohali {10} and Mumbai {07}.

SE Marsh of Mohali won the MoM Award on five occasions – the most by a cricketer in the tournament. SR Watson and Yousuf Pathan won MoM on four occasions.

SP Goswamy of Bangalore won MoM award on his T20 debut. SP Goswamy of Bangalore and JA Morkel of Chennai earned the MoM award for their performances when they were on the losing side.

There were eight instances of captains and eight instances of wicket keepers winning the MoM awards in the tournament.

Bangalore lost its first three wickets fell for single digit in the match against Jaipur at Jaipur on 17.05.08. The tournament witnessed six instances of a team losing its first two wickets for single digit.

SM Pollock of Mumbai, Sohail Tanvir of Jaipur and S Sreesanth of Mohali earned the distinction of capturing two wickets in the first over of the match.

YV Takawale of Mumbai holds the record for most dismissals – eleven – in the tournament. He pouched ten catches and effected one stumping from seven matches. He also holds the record for most dismissals in a match – four dismissals. His effort of three catches and one stumping came against Jaipur at Mumbai on 07.05.08. Kamran Akmal of Jaipur holds the record for most stumpings in the tournament – four.

MS Dhoni of Chennai and SK Warne of Jaipur hold the record for most runs and most wickets respectively as captains. MS Dhoni aggregated 414 runs from 16 matches and SK Warne had a tally of 19 wickets from 15 matches.
