Muralitharan is one of the twelve Sri Lankan bowlers who have conceded 100 plus runs in a test innings on test debut. He would become the second bowler in the annals of test cricket to total 100 plus wickets against three specific oppositions after SK Warne of Australia. SK Warne has an aggregate of 195 wickets against England, 103 wickets against New Zealand and 130 wickets against South Africa.

M Muralitharan and DPMD Jayawardene have been involved in a bowlers-fielder combination to dismiss 73 batsmen in tests which is the record for a bowler combination in the annals of test cricket. They have played 95 tests together to dismiss 73 batsmen.

Out of his 792 wickets, Muralitharan has an aggregate of 165 wickets thorugh bowled dismissals which is the record for most dismissals bowled in the annals of test cricket. He is the only bowler to have 150 plus wickets as bowled victims

Out of his 792 wickets, Muralitharan has 431 wickets as “caught victims” which is again a record for most dismissals caught of a bowler in the annals of test cricket. He is the second bowler to have 400 plus batsman caught, after SK Warne who has 418 such dismissals

Muralitharan and A Kumble share the record of most caught and bowled victims with 35 dismissals each.

Muralitharan is one of the three bowlers who have dismissed 300 plus batsman caught by a fielder- Muralitharan {384}, SK Warne {345} and A Kumble {313}. Muralitharan has most dismissals amongst the three – 384

47 batsmen have been dismissed stumped of the bowling of Muralitharan which is again a record in the annals of test cricket for most stumped dismissals of a bowler

Muralitharan remains the only bowler in the annals of test cricket to capture 100 plus wickets at three grounds. He has captured 166 wickets at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo 117 wickets at Asgiraya Stadium, Kandy and 103 wickets at Galle International Stadium, Galle.

Muralitharan has conceded 17989 runs prior to the start of the ensuing series against India and require 11 more runs for him to concede 18000 runs. He would become the second bowler in the annals of test cricket to concede 18000 runs after A Kumble who has conceded 18355 runs

Muralitharan returned with figures of 54.0-3-224-2 against Australia at Perth in Dec 1995 which is one of the 26 occasions of a bowler conceding 200 plus runs in an innings in the annals of test cricket as on date.

Muralitharan remains the only bowler in the world to capture at least one five wicket haul against each opposition he has played at home.

Muralitharan is one of the six bowlers who have dismissed all the eleven batsmen in a test match. Jim Laker. S Venkataraghavan, G Dymock, Abdul Qadir and Waqar Younis are the other bowlers to perform such a feat

Muralitharan is one of the six bowlers who have captured 100 plus wickets against two specific oppositions. The six bowlers are – CEL Ambrose of West Indies {128 vs Australia and 164 vs England}, LR Gibbs of West Indies {103 vs Australia and 100 vs England}, Muralitharan of Sri Lanka {112 vs England and 104 vs South Africa}, GD McGrath of Australia {157 vs England and 110 vs Australia}, CA Walsh of West Indies {135 vs Australia and 145 vs England} ad SK Warne of Australia {195 vs England, 103 vs New Zealand and 130 vs South Africa}

Muralithran remains the only bowler in the world to capture eight or more wickets on five occasions. The other bowler who had captured eight or more wickets on four occasions was GA Lohmann of England. Muralitharan’s eight or more wickets haul on five occasions read thus – 9 for 65 vs England at The Oval in Aug 1998, 8 for 87 vs India at Col-SSC in Aug 2001, 9 for 51 vs Zimbabwe at Kandy in Jan 2002, 8 for 49 vs West Indies at Kandy in Jul 2005 and 8 for 70 vs England at Nottingham in Jun 2006.

Muralitharan and JC Laker remain the only two bowlers in the world to capture nine or more wickets in an innings on two occasions. Muarlitharan {9 for 65 vs England at The Oval in Aug 2008 and 9 for 51 vs Zimbabwe at Kandy in Jan 2002} and JC Laker {10 for 53 and 9 for 36 vs Australia at Manchester in Jul 1956.

Muralitharan is the only visiting bowler to capture nine wickets in an innings on English soil. His 9 for 65 at The Oval against England remain the best innings effort by a visiting bowler on English soil.

RAL Massie of Australia, JC Laker of England and M Muralitharan of Sri Lanka are the three bowlers who have captured eight plus wickets in an innings on two separate occasions on English soil. Massie’s and Laker’s efforts have come in the same match.

Muralitharan’s two ten wicket match hauls have gone in a losing cause. The two occasions are – 11 for 212 vs Australia at Galle in Mar 2004 and 10 for 115 vs England at Birmingham in May 2006. He is one of the six bowlers in the annals of test cricket to witness two or more ten wickets to go in vain. DL Vettori of New Zealand, H Trumble of Australia, SK Warne of England and T Richardson of England are the four bowlers to witness their two ten wickets hauls in a losing cause, while Wasim Akram of Pakistan remains the only bowler to see his three ten wickets going in a losing cause.

R Dravid who has an aggregate of 1413 runs against Sri Lanka require 87 more runs for his 1500 runs. If he gets there he would be the second Indian batsman to score 1500 plus runs against Sri Lanka. Other batsman is SR Tendulkar who has an aggregate of 1605 runs prior to the start of the series.

V Sehwag who has an aggregate of 891 runs prior to the start of the series require 109 runs for his 1000 runs against Sri Lanka. If he gets there, he would become the fifth Indian batsman to total 1000 plus runs against Sri Lanka. SR Tendulkar {1605}, R Dravid {1413}, M Azharuddin {1215} and SC Ganguly {1064} are the other four batsman who have an aggregate of 1000 plus runs prior to the start of the series.

R Dravid who has an aggregate of 1413 runs against Sri Lanka require 87 more runs for his 1500 runs. He would then complete 1500 runs against two specific oppositions. He has already has an aggregate of 1837 runs against Australia. R Dravid would then join the select band of Indian batsmen who have an aggregate of 1500 runs against two or more specific oppositions. SM Gavaskar {1550 vs England, 2483 vs England, 2089 vs Pakistan and 2749 vs West Indies}, SR Tendulkar {2748 vs Australia, 2150 vs England and 1605 vs Sri Lanka}, DB Vengsarkar {1589 vs England and 1596 vs West Indies} and GR Viswanath {1538 vs Australia and 1880 vs England} are the four Indian batsmen who have aggregated 1500 runs against two or more specific oppositions

R Dravid who has an aggregate of 1413 runs against Sri Lanka require 87 more runs for his 1500 runs. His feat of 1500 runs then would provide the 14^th occasion of an Indian batsman totaling 1500 runs against a specific opposition

R Dravid has scored 8970 runs while batting at number three in tests. He requires 30 more runs for his 9000 runs. If he gets there he would become the second batsman in the annals of test cricket to total 9000 plus runs while batting at number three. RT Ponting {9421} is the other batsman to total 9000 plus runs while batting at number three.

KC Sangakkara of Sri Lanka has an aggregate of 6916 runs while batting at number three. He requires 84 more runs for his 7000 runs. If he gets there, he would became the third batsman in the annals of test cricket to aggregate 7000 plus runs while batting at number three. The other two batsmen are RT Ponting {9421} and R Dravid {8970|.

R Dravid has scored 68 fifties while batting at number three and requires two more fifties for 70 fifties. If he gets then, he would became the second batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 70 plus fifties while batting at number three, after RT Ponting of Australia who has 70 fifties to his credit.

R Dravid has scored 87 fifties in his test career and requires three more fifties for his 90 fifties. If he gets them, he would become the fourth batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 90 plus fifties. Others are SR Tendulkar {101}, AR Border {90} and RT Ponting {90}

R Dravid has scored 58 half centuries in his test career prior to the start of this series and require two more half centuries for his 60 fifties. He would then become the second batsman in the annals of test cricket to register 60 plus fifties. AR Border is the other batsman who has scored 63 half centuries.

M Muralitharan has an aggregate of 97 wickets against India. He needs three more wickets for his 100 wickets. He would then become the first bowler in the annals of test cricket to aggregate 100 plus wickets against India. His feat of 100 wickets against India would provide the 35^th occasion of a bowler capturing 100 plus wickets against a specific opposition.

His 100 wickets against India would earn him the distinction of aggregating 100 plus wickets against three oppositions. He has already aggregated 112 wickets against England and 104 wickets against South Africa. He would become the second bowler in the annals of test cricket to total 100 plus wickets against three specific oppositions after SK Warne of Australia. SK Warne has an aggregate of 195 wickets against England, 103 wickets against New Zealand and 130 wickets against South Africa.

M Muralitharan has an aggregate of 792 wickets prior to the start of this test and require eight more wickets for his 800 wickets. He would then become the first bowler in the annals of test cricket to capture 800 test wickets.

Prior to the start of this series, R Dravid has an aggregate of 945 runs while playing under MS Dhoni and requires 55 runs more for 1000 runs. If he gets them then he would have scored 1000 plus runs under five captains – Under M Azharuddin {1162}, Under MS Dhoni {1000 plus}, Under himself {1736}, Under SC Ganguly {4912} and under SR Tendulkar {1659}

R Dravid has an aggregate of 1328 runs while batting in the fourth innings of a test match and requires 72 more runs to get to the mark of 1400 runs. He would then become the second highest run getter in fourth innings after BC Lara who has a total of 1440 runs. If he gets to 1400 runs he would have surpassed SM Gavaskar’s 1398 runs.

Prior to the start of this test series, SR Tendulkar is in the elite group of batsmen who have score eight or more hundreds against two specific oppositions. One more hundred against Sri Lanka would give SR Tendulkar his ninth hundred and with it the distinction of becoming the only batsman in the annals of test cricket of scoring nine or more hundreds against two specific oppositions. Tendulkar has already scored ten hundreds against Australia.

SR Tendulkar and R Draivd have scored 12 fifties each against Sri Lanka and one more fifty to any of them in the first test series would give them a record of most fifties by an Indian batsman against Sri Lanka.

R Dravid has scored nine half centuries against Sri Lanka prior to the start of the series and one more half century to him would earn him the distinction of becoming the only Indian batsman to register ten half centuries against Sri Lanka. He would also earn the distinction of becoming the first batsman in the annals of test cricket to score ten half centuries against Sri Lanka

Prior to the start of the test series, PA de Silva and DPMD Jayawardene share the Sri Lankan record of most centuries against India. Both the batsmen have scored five centuries. One more hundred for DPMD Jayawardene would give him his sixth hundred against India and with it the record of most hundreds by a Sri Lankan batsman against India.

DPMD Jayawardene has an aggregate of 2467 runs at Col-SSC. He needs 33 runs for his 2500 runs at this ground. If gets him them in the second test of the ensuring test series, he would earn the distinction of becoming the first batsman in the annals of test cricket to total 2500 runs at a particular venue – a World record in this category of statistics.

DPMD Jayawardene, SR Tendulkar and R Draivd have scored 12 fifties each in Sri Lanka-India test series and one more fifty to any of them in the first test series would give them a record of most fifties by a batsman in the series.

SR Tendulkar {1605} and DPMD Jayawardene {1534} are the two batsmen who have an aggregate of 1500 runs in Sri Lanka-India test series. DPMD Jayawardene requires 66 more runs to become the second batsman to total 1600 runs in the series

NR Mongia has to his credit effected 18 dismissals behind the stumps which is an Indian record against Sri Lanka. MS Dhoni with 16 dismissals is close behind NR Mongia. Three more dismissals in the series would give MS Dhoni an Indian record of most dismissals against Sri Lanka and four dismissals would give him 20 dismissals which would make him the second wicket keeper to effect 20 dismissals in the series. SAR Silva of Sri Lanka is the other wicket keeper who has effected 22 dismissals.

It is interesting to note that there are nine batsmen who have scored 99 in a test innings on two occasions.

Test cricket has witnessed just two occasions of two bowlers conceding 200 plus runs in a test innings. The first such occasion was witnessed at Kingston in Feb 58 in the test match between West Indies and Pakistan. Pakistan bowlers – Fazal Mahmood {247} and Khan Mohammad {259} conceded 200 plus runs. The second such instance was witnessed at Col-RPS in Aug 97 in the test match between Sri Lanka and India. Two Indian bowlers RK Chauhan {276} and A Kumble {223} conceded 200 plus runs in the same innings

It is interesting to note that in both these tests, one batsman scored a triple hundred and another scored a double hundred. At Kingston – West Indian batsmen – GS Sobers scored 365 not out while CC Hunte came up with 260. At Col-RPS, ST Jayasuriya scored 340 while RS Mahanama scored 225

Incidentally these two are the only two occasions of a test match in which a batsman has scored a treple hundred and another a double hundred just like the two occasions in which two bowlers of the same team conceding 200 plus runs in an test innings

The test between Australia and Pakistan which started today at Lord’s provide the tenth occasion of a test played at a neutral venue in the annals of test cricket. All the ten tests are listed below

Sri Lanka has posted 600 runs in an innings on four occasions. 952 for 6 declared at Col-RPS in Aug 97 is its highest team total against India. India has posed 600 plus runs on three occasions. Its 726 for 9 declared at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 is its highest total

Sri Lanka has been dismissed all out for a total of less than 150 runs on five occasions, while India has been dismissed for a total of less than 150 runs only once. Sri Lanka’s 82 at Chandigarh in Nov 90 is its lowest total in a completed innings, while India’s lowest total is 138 at Col-SSC in Jul 2008

ST Jayasuriya {340 at Col-RPS in Aug 97}, DPMD Jayawardene {275 at Ahmedabad in Nov 2009}, DPMD Jayawardene {242 at Col-SSC in Feb 99} and RS Mahanama {225 at Col-RPS in Aug 07} are the three Sri Lankan batsmen to score four double hundreds. ST Jayasuriya’s 340 represent the highest individual innings by a Sri Lankan batsman

ST Jayasuriya remains the only Sri Lankan batsman to score a triple hundred and also the only batsman in Sri Lanka-India test series. DPMD Jayawardene is the only Sri Lankan batsman to score double hundreds on two occasions.

V Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to score double hundreds on two occasions – 293 at Mumbai-BS in Dec 2009 and 201* at Galle in Jul 2008. While scoring 201 not out he earned the distinction of carrying the bat through the completed innings.

DPMD Jayawardene and PA de Silva share the record for most hundreds by a Sri Lankan batsman against India. Both the batsmen have scored five hundreds. SR Tendulkar has scored eight hundreds which is not only the Indian record for most hundreds against Sri Lanka but also a record in Sri Lanka-India test series.

It is interesting to note that there are no hundreds by Indian batsmen in a losing cause against Sri Lanka, while three hundreds by Sri Lankan batsmen have gone in vain against India. The three hundreds are – 104 by DPMD Jayawardene at Kandy in Aug 2001, 109 by TM Dilshan at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 and 137 by KC Sangakkara at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009

There are nine occasions of Indian captains scoring hundreds. Kapil Dev’s 163 at Kanpur in Dec 1986 is the highest individual knock by an Indian captain. There are four occasion of Sri Lankan captains scoring hundreds against India. KC Sangakkara’s 137 at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 is the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan captain against India.

SAR Silva, KC Sangakkara and HAPW Jayawardene are the three Sri Lankan wicket keepers who have scored hundreds against India, while MS Dhoni is the lone Indian wicket keeper to score two hundreds against Sri Lanka

Ishant Sharma of India and MS Atapattu of Sri Lanka share the record for most zeroes in India-Sri Lanka test series. Both the batsmen have failed to open the account in four innings.

DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka, R Dravid of India and SR Tendulkar of India share the record for most fifties in India-Sri Lanka test series. They have scored 12 fifties each

ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka with 571 runs in 1997 series remains the only batsman to aggregate 500 plus runs in India-Sri Lanka test series. He aggregated 571 runs from two tests and three innings

HMRKB Herath returned with figures of 53.3-2-240-3 at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 09 providing the most expensive bowling figures in terms of runs conceded by a Sri Lankan bowler against India.
