South Africa-India Test series highlights

South Africa and India have played nine series prior to this series. India has been victorious in two series – 1996-97 and 2004-05 – both series played in India. South Africa on the other hand has won five series – 1992-93 series played in South Africa, 1996-97 series played in South Africa, 1999-00 series played in India, 2001-02 series played in South Africa and 2006-08 series played in South Africa . Two series – 2007-09 series played in India and 2009-10 series played in India are drawn.

South Africa and India have played 24 tests. South Africa has won eleven tests, India has won six tests and seven tests have ended in a draw

India has posted the team total of 600 plus runs on two occasions – 643 for 6 declared at Kolkata in Feb 2010 and 627 at Chennai in Mar 2008. Its highest team total in South Africa is 414 at Cape Town in Jan 2007. India’s total of 643 for 6 declared at Kolkata in Feb 2010 is a series record.

South Africa is yet to post a total of 600 plus runs against India. It has posted 500 plus runs on five occasions – 563 at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001 : 558 for 6d at Nagpur in Feb 2010 : 540 at Chennai in Mar 2008 : 529 for 7d at Cape Town in Jan 1997 and 510 for 9d in Nov 2004. 563 at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001 is its highest total in South Africa.

India has been dismissed for a total of less than 100 on two occasions – 66 at Durban in Dec 96 and 76 at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008. 66 at Durban in Dec 96 is its lowest total in a completed innings and also represents the lowest total by a team in India-South Africa test series.

South Africa has been dismissed for a total of less than 100 only once – 84 at Jo’burg in Dec 2006. This total represents the South Africa’s lowest total in a completed innings against India.

India has won one test by an innings – by an innings and 57 runs at Kolkata in Feb 10. Its largest margin of victory by runs is by 280 runs which has come at Kanpur in Dec 1996. Its largest margin of victory in terms of wickets is by eight wickets. It has won two tests by eight wickets – at Kolkata in Nov 2004 and at Kanpur in Apr 2008

South Africa has won three tests by an innings – by an innings and 90 runs at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008 : by an innings and 71 runs at Bangalore in Mar 2000 and by an innings and 6 runs at Nagpur in Feb 2010. Ahmedabad win represents the largest margin of victory in terms of an innings. South Africa has won two tests by 300 plus runs margin – by 329 runs a Kolkata in Nov 1996 and 328 runs at Durban in Dec 1996. Kolkata win represents its largest win in terms of runs. South Africa has won two tests by nine wickets – at Port Elizabeth in Dec 1992 and at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001

Three Indian batsmen – SR Tendulkar {1415}, V Sehwag {1162} and R Dravid {1132} – have an aggregagte of 1000 plus runs against South Africa, while JH Kallis {1087} is the only South African batsmen to total 1000 plus runs against India

Indian batsmen have scored 21 hundreds against South Africa. V Sehwag’s 319 is the highest individual score against South Africa. SR Tendulkar {05} and V Sehwag {05} share the record for most hundreds by an Indian batsman against South Africa.

South African batsmen have scored 25 hundreds against India. HM Amla’s 253 not out at Nagpur in Feb 2010 represent the highest individual score by a South African batsman against India. HM Amla with four hundreds to his credit owns the record for most hundreds by a South African batsman against India.

There are ten occasions of an Indian batsman’s hundred in a losing cause. SR Tenduklar’s and M Azharuddin’s three hundreds have gone in vain

There are four occasions of a South African batsman’s hundred going in vain – 123* by HM Amla at Kolkata in Feb 2010 : 121 by JH Kallis at Kolkata in Nov 2004 : 114 by HM Amla at Kolkata in Feb 2010 and 100 by AN Petersen at Kolkata in Feb 2010

SR Tenudlkar {169} at Cape Town in Jan 1997 and MS Dhoni {132*} at Kolkata in Feb 2010 are the two Indian captains to score hundreds against Souht Africa. KC Wessels with his 118 at Durban in Nov 1992 is the only South African captain to score a hundred against India

MS Dhoni with his 132 not out at Kolkata in Feb 2010 is the only wicket keeper batsman to score hundred againt India. No South African wicket keeper batsman has scored a hundred against India. MV Bocuher’s 70 at Chennai in Mar 2008 is the highest score by a South African wicket keeper batsman against India.

A Kumble {84} and J Srinath {64} are the two Indian bowlers to capture 50 plus wickets against South Africa. Harbhajan Singh has a total of 45 wickets to his credit and requires five more wickets for his 50 wickets. AA Donald {57} and SM Pollock {52} are the two South African bowlers to capture 50 plus wickets against India

There are fourtenn occasions of Indian bowlers capturing five or more wickets against Souht Africa. There are eleven occasions of South African bowlers capturing five or more wickets against India

Harbhajan Singh’s 7 for 87 at Kolkata in Nov 2004 is the best innings bowling effort by an Indian bowler against South Africa. L Klusener’s 8 for 64 at Kolkata in Nov 1996 is the best innings bowling effort by a South African bowler against India.

BKV Prasad with his 10 for 153 at Durban in Dec 1996 is the only Indian bowler to capture ten or more wickets against South Africa.

AA Donald {12 for 139 at Port Elizabeth in Dec 1992}, DW Steyn {10 for 108 at Nagpur in Feb 2010} and SM Pollock {10 for 147 at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001} are the three South African bowlers to capture ten or more wickets against India. There are five occasions of Indian bowlers’ five or more wickets in a losing cause. PR Adam’s 6 for 59 at Kanpur in Dec 1996 provides the only occasion of a South African bowler’s five plus wicket haul going in vain against India.

There are 26 occasions of an Indian bowler conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against South Africa. Harbhajan Singh conceded 166 runs at Nagpur in Feb 2010. His figures of 2 for 166 are the most expensive bowling figures by an Indian bowler against South Africa in terms of runs conceded. RP Singh – none for 111 at Chennai in Mar 2008, A Kumble – none for 136 at Cape Town in Jan 1997 and A Mishra – none for 140 at Nagpur in Feb 2010 – are the three bowlers to concede 100 plus runs without a wicket against India.

There are 15 occasions of a South African bowler conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against India. PJ Harris conceded 203 runs at Chennai in Mar 2008. His figures of 3 for 203 are the most expensive bowling figures by a South African bowler against India in terms of runs conceded. WD Parnell – none for 103 at Kolkata in Feb 2010 and M Ntini – none for 107 at Cape Town in Jan 2006 – are the two bowlers to concede 100 plus runs without a wicket against India.

Indian batmen have posted seventeen three figure partnerships against India of which six are 200 plus runs partnerships. 268 runs partnership for the second wicket between V Sehwag and R Dravid is the highest partnership scored by Indian batsman against India.

South African batsmen have posted 25 three figure partnerships against India of which five are 200 plus runs partnerships. 340 runs partnership for the third wicket between HM Amla and JH Kallis is the highest partnership scored by Indian batsmen against South Africa.
