Zimbabwe win the first game in qualifying round of sixth edition of World T20

Qualifying rounds – ICC WT20 2016 – Match 01 – Hong Kong vs Zimbabwe at Nagpur on Mar 08, 2016 – Zimbabwe won by 14 runs

Zimbabwe innings contained three run outs – H Masakadza, Sikander Raza and WP Masakadza – to provide the 155th, 156th and 157th occasion a batsman dismissed run out in an innings in WT20. It also provides the 4th, 5th and 6th occasion of Zimbabwe batsmen dismissed run out in an innings of a WT20 game.

H Masakada’s run out dismissal in this game was his third such dismissal. He became the seventh batsman in the history of WT20 to be dismissed run out on three or more occasions. Others are – MS Dhoni {05}, DL Vettori {05}, TM Dilshan {03}, Kamran Akmal {03}, Tamim Iqbal {03} and KS Williamson {03}

H Masakadza’s run out dismissal in this game was his sixth such dismissal in T20I while opening the innings. He now shares the record for most run out dismissals of an opening batsman in the history of T20Is with WTS Porterfeild of Ireland. WTS Porterfield has also been dismissed run out on six occasions. It also provides the 37th occasion of an opening batsman dismissed run out in WT20 and the third such occasion for a Zimbabwe opening batsman and on all the three occasions it was H Masakadza.

H Masakadza’s run out dismissal in this game provide the fourth occasion of a captain opener dismissed run out in WT20 and the first such occasion for a Zimbabwe captain opener. It also provides the 20th occasion of a captain dismissed run out in a WT20 and the first such occasion for a Zimbabwe captain

Zimbabwe innings contained three run outs – H Masakadza, Sikander Raza and WP Masakadza – to provide the seventh occasion of three or more batsmen dismissed run outs in an innings in WT20. It also provides the first such occasion for Zimbabwe batsmen.

R Mutumbami of Zimbabwe failed to open his account in this game to provide the 18th occasion of a wicket keeper batsman scoring a duck in WT20 and the second  such occasion by a Zimbabwe wicket keeper batsman. The first such occasion was BRM Taylor’s duck against Sri Lanka at Hambantota on 18.09.12

JJ Atkinson of Hong Kong scored 53 in this game to provide the 14th occasion of a wicket keeper batsman scoring a fifty in WT20 and the first such occasion by a Hong Kong wicket keeper batsman.

R Mutumbami of Zimbabwe scored a duck and JJ Atkinson of Hong Kong scored 53 in this game to provide the second occasion of rival wicket keeper batsmen scoring a duck and a fifty in WT20. Both such occasions are furnished below

Hong Kong capped RJ Campbell for this game. He was aged 44 years and 30 days as on date and earned the distinction of becoming the oldest debutant of T20I. The previous record was held by Mohammad Tauqir who had made his T20I debut for UAE against Scotland at Edinburgh on 09,07,15, RJ Campbell also became the Hong Kong’s oldest T20I debutant. The previous record was held by Khurram Khan who at the age of 42 years and 172 days debuted against Nepal at Chittagong on 16.03.14. RJ Campbell became the first cricketer to represent two countries in ODIs and T20Is. He had appeared in four one day games for Australia prior to making his T20I debut for Hong Kong in this game.

V Sibanda scored 59 in this game to provide the fourth occasion of a Zimbabwe batsman scoring a fifty in WT20. It also provides the second occasion of a Zimbabwe opener scoring a fifty in WT20. The first such occasion was BRM Taylor’s 60 against Australia at Cape Town on 12.09.07

V Sibanda of Zimbabwe and JJ Atkinson of Hong Kong scored 59 and 53 respectively in this game to provide the tenth occasion of both the opening batsmen scoring fifties in a WT20.

Nizakat Khan of Hong Kong collected the first ball duck in this game to provide the 85th occasion of a batsman dismissed for a first ball duck in WT20 and also the fourth such occasion by Hong Kong batsmen. Nizakar Khan first ball duck in this game was his second first ball duck in WT20 – the first being against Nepal at Chittagong on 16.03.14. He is the second Hong Kong batsman to collect the first ball duck on two occasion after Irfan Ahmed, It is interesting to note that the four first ball ducks by Hong Kong batsmen are shared between Irfan Ahmed and Nizakat Khan.

Nagpur-Jamtha became the 16th ground to host a WT20 game while India became the sixth country to host the WT20.

Zimbabwe won its fourth game in WT20 in its ten outings, while Hong Kong suffered its third  loss in four games in WT20.

H Masakadza and Tanvir Afzal of Zimbabwe and Hong Kong had the honour of leading their teams for the first time in WT20. They became the 43rd and 44th captains to lead a team in WT20. H Masakadza became the third captain to lead Zimbabwe in WT20 while Tanvir Afzal became the second captain to lead Hong Kong in WT20.

Zimbabwe team contained two brothers – H Masakadza and WP Masakadza – providing the first occasion of a game containing brothers from Zimbabwe in WT20

Eight teams will fight to secure the two available spots for the Super 10 round that starts from March 15. Eight teams have already qualified for the tournament proper. The D day has arrived at last. The first game of the  sixth edition of ICC WT20 will start today at 2.00 PM. In the qualifying matches, Hong Kong will take on Zimbabwe at Nagpur.  Here are some of the key stats of the five editions played earlier

There is no consistency of a team winning the Championship with the game itself being unpredictable. The results were also unpredictable as the five editions are won by different teams. The first edition was won by India, second by Pakistan, third by England, fourth by West Indies and ehe fifth by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is going to defend the sixth championship to be played in India. Sri Lanka owns the record for most wins in the tournament. It has won 21 games and is the only team to win 20 plus games. Bangladesh with fifteen losses holds the record for most losses by a team in the tournament. Bangladesh is closely followed by England which has lost 14 games

The tournament has witnessed seven occasions of a team posting 200 plus runs in the tournament. Sri Lanka’s 260 for 6 against Kenya at Jo’burg on 14.09.07 is the highest team total by a team in the tournament. It also represents the only occasion of a team posting 250 plus runs in the tournament.

There are twenty occasions of a team dismissed all out for a total less than 100 runs in the tournament. Netherland’s 39 all out against Sri Lanka at Chittagond on 24.03.14 is the lowest total by a team in a completed innings

DPMD Jayawardene’s 1016 runs in the tournament represent the most run aggregate by a batsman in the tournament. He is the only batsman to score 1000 runs in the tournament.

DPMD Jayawardene also holds the record for most boundary fours scored by a batsman in the tournament. He has scored 111 boundary fours. He is the only batsman to score 100 plus boundary fours in the tournament

CH Gayle with 807 runs to his credit occupies the second place in the list of batsmen who have scored most runs in the tournament. TM Dilshan is the other batsman to score 700 plus runs {764},

DPMD Jayawardene {1016}, CH Gayle {807} and TM Dilshan {764} are the only three batsmen to total 700 plus runs in the tournament

CH Gayle with 49 boundary sixes to his credit owns the record for most boundary sixes scored by a batsman in the tournament. He needs one more boundary six to become the first batsman to score 50 boundary sixes in the tournament.

The tournament has witnessed sic centuries the details of which are furnished below in the chronological order. BB McCulllum’s 123 in the game between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Pallekele on 21.09.12 is the highest individual score registered by a batsman the tournament.

CH Gayle of West Indies owns the record for most fifties in the tournament with eight fifties {01 C + 07 HC}. He is closely followed by DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka who has scored seven fifties {01C + 06 C}. RG Sharma and V Kohli of India have six fifties {all half centuries}

CH Gayle also holds the record for most half centuries in the tournament. He has scored seven half centuries. DPMD Jayawardene. RG Sharma and V Kohli are the have scored six half centuries in the tournament.

The ‘maverick’ batsman Shahid Afridi of Pakistan and TM Dilshan of Sri Lanka share the record for most ducks in the tournament. Both the batsmen have been dismissed without scoring on five occasions. LJ Wright of England and  ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka are the other two batsmen who have collected four ducks in the tournament. It is interesting to note that Shahid Afridi’s five ducks in the tournament are first ball dismissals.

As many as 84 occasions of a batsman collecting the first ball ducks are witnessed in the tournament. The tournament has witnessed eleven occasions of a batsman dismissed run out first ball and six occasions of batsmen dismissed for a duck without facing a delivery.

The tournament has witnessed 80 occasions of batsmen dismissed stumped in the tournament of which two batsmen were dismissed stumped after scoring a half century. There are eleven occasions of batsmen dismissed stumped without scoring. It is interesting to note that only one batsman was dismissed stumped off a wide ball in the tournament. {KA Pollard for a duck – dismissed stumped of the bowling of GP Swann – West Indies vs England at Providence on 03.05.10}

Eleven batsmen have been dismissed run out after scoring a fifty in the tournament, while eighteen batsmen have been dismissed run out without scoring.

DL Vettori and Shahid Afridi are the two captains to be dismissed run out without scoring in the tournament. CH Gayle remains the only captain to be dismissed run out after scoring a fifty. He was run out for 98 in the game between West Indies and India at Bridgetown on 09.05.10

There are nineteen occasions of a captain scoring fifties in the tournament and also thirteen occasions of a wicket keeper batsman scoring a ninety in the tournament. BB McCullum of New Zealand is the only wicket keeper batsman to score a hundred in the tournament. He scored 123 in the game between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Pallekele on 21.09.12.
