Shoaib Malik of Pakistan became the third batsman in the history of T20Is to aggregate 2000 plus runs

Shoaib Malik of Pakistan became the third batsman in the history of T20Is to aggregate 2000 plus runs after MJ Guptill and BB McCullum.  The following table lists the six batsmen who have totalled 1900 plus runs in  the history of T20 Internationals.

Shoaib Malik who was in need of eleven runs prior to the start of the Zimbabwe tri series involving Zimbabwe, Austrlia and Pakistan at Harare. He completed 2000 runs when he was on 11 against Zimbabwe at Harare on 01.07.18 during his knock of 37 not out. His  run aggregate read 2026 at the end of  the game

Shoaib Malik went past V Kohli and RG Sharma of India who had totalled 1992  and  1949 T20I runs respectively. It was wide believed that V Kohli would become the third batsman to reach the land mark of 2000 runs in T20Is, as he needed 17 runs prior to the start of T20I games against  Ireland. He scored a duck in the first game and nine runs in the second to reach  an aggregate of 1992 – eight runs shy of 2000 mark.

Six bowlers who have taken four wickets in four balls

Six bowlers who have taken four wickets in four balls

Picking up a hat-trick in cricket is quite a rare feat in itself,  but there have been few instances where the bowlers have gone a notch ahead and picked up 4 wickets in 4 balls. This is a feat so rare that it has happened only once in international cricket. People often refer to this as a “ double hat-trick” since it consists of two sets of overlapping pairs of hat-tricks.

Balls 1,2,3 consists of one set and balls 2, 3, 4 consists of the other hence the term double hat-trick.

Here we look at 6 such instances where the bowlers have managed to achieve this unthinkable feat and stunned their opponents in the process.

1) Lasith Malinga  – Malinga is the only cricketer to have picked 4 wickets in 4 balls in an international game

Who could forget this heart-stopping thriller from the 2007 World Cup! The Proteas almost choked yet again but managed to somehow scrape through to a one-wicket win in their Super Eight clash against Sri Lanka. The Proteas were cruising at 206/5 while chasing down just 210 to win and were at a striking distance from a comfortable win.

Lasith Malinga though had other plans. In the 45th over Malinga had Shaun Pollock clean bowled off his fifth ball and had Andrew Hall caught at covers of the final ball of that over. Coming back to bowl the 47th over Malinga struck off the first ball  to send Jacques Kallis on his way and completed his hat-trick in the process. Kallis was caught behind for a well made 86 and his dismissal really set the cat amongst the pigeons.

Malinga made it four in a row with the wicket of Makhaya Ntini who was castled by that famous yorker. South Africa huffed and puffed their way to get the remaining three runs and ended up on the winning side.

2) Andre Russell – Andre Russell picked 4 wickets in 4 balls in a List A game against India A

Turning up for West Indies A, Andre Russell, the flamboyant allrounder, managed this feat against India A in September 2013 and became the first bowler in T20 List A history to pick ‘4 in 4’. India A were playing West Indies A at Bangalore in a one-off T20 game when Russell got his act together in the 19th over of the innings dismissing four quality Indian batsmen.

Russell picked the wickets of skipper Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha and Yusuf Pathan to peg India back a wee bit. However, India A ended up scoring a mammoth 214 runs. Russell has since gone on to become a vital cog in the wheel of the West Indian unit and has played a stellar role in their recent success.

3) Al-Amin Hossain – Al-Amin Hossain picked 5 wickets in an over in a domestic T20 game in 2013

Hossain became the second bowler after Andre Russell to pick up 4 wickets in 4 balls in Twenty20s and is the first bowler to take five wickets in an over in a List A T20 match. The talented Bangladeshi who was playing for UCB-BCB Eleven wreaked havoc against Abahani Limited in the Victory Day T20 domestic tournament.

It was the final over of the innings and Al-Amin was entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the crucial over. He responded in style by picking up a wicket off the first ball and then picking 4 consecutive wickets off the last four balls of the over. His four scalps were Nazmul Hossain Milon, Naeem Islam Jr, Suhrawawadi Shuvo and Nabil Samad. UCB-BCB Eleven later clinched the thriller by 2 wickets.

4) Alfonso Thomas – In the 2014 County Championship, Alfonso Thomas picked up 4 in 4 against Sussex at Taunton and helped Somerset to a comfortable win. The South African was all over the Sussex batters as they found it extremely difficult to counter his swing.

Thomas picked up a hat-trick in the last three balls of an over and picked up another one in the first ball of his next. He bowled full and had the nightwatchman Jimmy Anyon bowled off an inside edge. He then caught Rory Hamilton-Brown in front, off his next ball and finished his hat-trick with the wicket of former Irish skipper, Ed Joyce who was caught fishing outside the off stump. His fourth victim was Matt Machan who was bowled in a similar fashion to Anyon.

5) Kevan James – Kevan James not only took 4 in 4 but also scored a century against the visiting Indians in 1996

It was the English summer of 1996 when India unearthed two of their greatest cricketers; Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly. Not many would remember a certain bloke called Kevan James though. James did the unthinkable for Hampshire when he picked up 4 wickets in 4 balls against the Indians and followed it up with a century in the practice game at Southampton leading up to the third test.

James with his left arm medium had Vikram Rathour’s wicket first up. Sachin Tendulkar walked out and was dismissed off an inside edge that carried to short leg. James then completed his hat-trick with the wicket of the then-young Rahul Dravid who was trapped in front.

Sanjay Manjrekar was the next victim when he was caught behind off a widish delivery. James later top-scored with 103 to propel Hampshire to 458 and the game ended in a draw.

6) Gary Butcher – Gary Butcher picked up 4 consecutive wickets for Surrey in the year 2000

Gary Butcher, the younger brother of former English opener Mark Butcher, created history by picking up 4 consecutive wickets for Surrey and dismantled the Derbyshire tail with his gentle seamers. Adam Hollioake who was the captain of Surrey those days decided to drop his brother Ben Hollioake and accommodated Gary into his side.

The decision yielded great results as Butcher picked the wicket of Paul Aldred off the last ball of an over followed by a hat-trick in the first three balls of his next over. He picked up the wickets Tim Munton, Kavin Dean, and Lian Wharton. With the ball seaming around, all three were caught at slips and Derbyshire were folded up for a paltry 118.

FOUR WICKETS IN FOUR BALLS – FIVE IN SIX BALLS – IN FIRST CLASS CRICKET

FOUR WICKETS IN FOUR BALLS – FIVE IN SIX BALLS – IN FIRST CLASS CRICKET

It was a Thursday, June 28, 1862 in Victorian England, and a First-Class match was about to begin at Hove between Kent and hosts Sussex. English cricket was in a state of transition at the time, making the laborious and contentious change from the early underarm mode of bowling to round-arm and finally, to the over-arm form of bowling that we know today. Overs of the time consisted of 4 balls only, and there were many who sported top-hats and gaiters in the field. Pitches were far from perfect and there was always the anticipation of something unusual happening during the course of the game.

From left: Bob Crisp, the only man to take 4-in-4 twice; Pat Pocock, who took 4 in 4, 5 in 6, 6 in 9, and 7 in 11; and Neil Wagner, the only one to take 5 wickets in an over in First-Class cricket © Getty Images

John Hale, skipper of the Sussex team and a former Rugby School alumnus, opted for first strike. He might have regretted the decision soon, because Sussex were bowled out for 101, off 82 overs.

Kent’s main wicket-taker was one Joseph Wells, from Penshurst Place, with figures of 28-13-35-6. It seems that Wells was a nephew of Timothy Duke, related to the Duke family of Penshurst that had been in the business of manufacturing their celebrated brand of six-seam cricket balls with a Royal Patent in 1775. His son, of course, earned more fame, and went by the name of HG Wells.

Bob Crisp: A once-in-a-generation character who also played cricket – Till date, there have been 44 instances of a bowler taking 4 wickets off 4 consecutive balls in First-Class cricket. Bob Crisp is the only bowler to perform the feat twice in his First-Class career, as follows:

– For Western Province (WP) against Griqualand West (GW) at Johannesburg in 1931-32 – Crisp took 8 for 31 in the GW first innings of 114, including a hat-trick. He also took 5 in 8 balls, 6 in 12, and 7 in 25.

– For WP against Natal at Durban in 1933-34 – Crisp took 9 for 64 in the Natal first innings of 214.

In this connection, perhaps a special mention should be made of Neil Wagner, born in 1986 at Pretoria, but whose magic figures materialised while playing for Otago against Wellington at Queenstown in Plunket Shield 2010-11.

Wagner captured a hat-trick in the Wellington first innings of 148, converted that into a 4-in-4, and completed the over by taking 5 wickets in the six-ball over, becoming the first ever, and to date, the only, bowler to do so in the history of First-Class cricket. Bowling the last over before lunch on the third day, Wagner picked up 4 wickets with the first 4 balls of the over, before finishing the over with another wicket off the sixth

Further scrutiny of the available data shows that there had been 8 instances up to the year 1899, 24 instances from 1900 to the year 1999, and 12 instances from the year 2000 till date.

There are only two Indians in this list: Sadanand Mohol and Shankar Saini, both of whom have played relatively few First-Class matches in their respective careers. Let us look at the careers of these two in a little detail.

A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Mohol played 45 matches, capturing 165 wickets at 21.32. His best innings bowling figures were 8 for 42. He had five or more wickets in an innings 9 times and 10 or more wickets in a match twice. He was one of the only two quick bowlers to be selected for the Indian team on the 1967 tour of England, the other being Subrata Guha. Mohol, however, was never awarded a Test cap.

He was playing for the Indian Board President’s XI against a team with the rather involved name of Maharashtra Small Savings Minister’s and Life Insurance Company Chairman’s Combined XI in a Defence Fund Match at the Club of Maharashtra Ground in Poona in 1965-66. Opening bowling with Maharashtra teammate Vasant Ranjane, Mohol captured 6 for 70 from his 29.5 overs (7 maidens) in the opponents’ first innings total of 220.

Mohol took a hat-trick with the wickets of Ajit Wadekar, Sudhakar Adhikari, and Madhukar Gupte, then followed up with the prize scalp of ML Jaisimha with his next ball to become the first Indian bowler to take a 4-in-4 in First-Class cricket.

There was a feeling among the cognoscenti that Mohol had turned out to be a bit of an underachiever as far as his First-Class career went, given his talent and the promise that he had shown in his early days.

Saini was a right arm medium paced bowler. He played 20 matches capturing 57 wickets. His best innings figures read 6 for 21, and his bowling average was 22.85. He had 5 wickets in an innings 4 times, but never 10 wickets in a match.

Saini succeeded in establishing his name in the record books against Himachal Pradesh at Delhi in 1988-89. Delhi declared their first innings closed at 448 for 3 after their first wicket had fallen without any runs on the board. Raman Lamba (118) and Manoj Prabhakar (229*) added 280 for the second wicket. Saini did not bat in the innings.

Himachal Pradesh, a relatively inexperienced and definitely weaker unit, were dismissed for 102 in the first innings, Saini capturing 6 for 21, his best ever innings bowling analysis. His last two deliveries of the first innings got him the wickets of Shakti Singh and Anil Sen.

When he came on to bowl in the second innings, his first delivery earned him the wicket of Shakti again, and Satish Mehra with his next ball. Saini thus became only the second, and till date, last, Indian bowler to capture a 4-in-4, with the added twist of doing this over two innings and capturing the wicket of one batsman (Shakti) twice in the sequence.

Shankar Saini takes four wickets in four balls; dismisses Shakti Singh twice in a hat-trick – In fact, Saini became only the second bowler to dismiss the same batsman twice in the same hat-trick. Back in 1844, William Clarke of all-England had done the same to John Fagge of Kent.

The last bowler till date to have accomplished this feat of a 4-in-4 has been Kelly Smuts, for Eastern Province (EP) against Boland at Paarl in 2015-16. Smuts had a magical game, scoring the only individual century of the game (108) in the only EP innings of 442, and capturing 7 for 36 and 6 for 35.

The feat occurred in the Boland second innings of 144, when Smuts took the wickets of Emile Kriek, Thomas Kannemeyer, wicketkeeper Junaid Cassiem, and Ferisco Adams. EP won by an innings and 93 runs.

Pat Pocock: An off-spinner in the classical mould – It would be a grave injustice to the enigmatic and brilliant Surrey off-break bowler Pat Pocock if we were to conclude this narrative without mentioning his wondrous deeds against Sussex at Eastbourne in August 1972. Pocock’s initial analysis of 2 for 69 in the first innings of 226 was but a prelude to the astounding occurrences to follow in the 2nd innings. The scorecard makes the bare statement that Pocock had a second-innings analysis of 7 for 67 from 16 overs.

The match notes elaborate further on the deeds, as follows: – With 3 overs left of the compulsory 20 in the last hour, Sussex were187 for 1. – Pocock’s penultimate over was w.w2.w

– The final over of the innings (with Sussex needing 5 to win) was bowled by Pocock and went as follows: www1ww, the final wicket being a run out. 5 wickets falling in the final over is unique in First-Class cricket.

Pocock set three world records: – 5 wickets in 6 balls, equalling Bill Copson (this record has, of course, been subsequently surpassed by Wagner as stated above, with his 5 wickets in the same 6-ball over), – 6 wickets in 9 balls, and – 7 in 11. In effect, then, Pocock’s 4-in-4 was also accomplished over 2 overs.
