England declared its second innings – the third innings of the test – after posting 423 for the loss of eight wickets in the ongoing test at The Oval to provide the 37th occasion of England declaring its innings closed in the third innings of a test. Batsmen who have scored centuries on test debut and in farewell tests – AN Cook of England joins the elite list

AN Cook of England became the fifth batsman in the annals of test cricket to score centuries on debut test and also in the farewell test.  He had scored 104 not out against India on his test debut at Nagpur in Mar 2006 and scored 147 in his farewell test  also against India at  The Oval in Sep 2018. RA Duff, WH Ponsford, GS Chappell, and M Azharuddin are the other four batsmen to perform such a rare feat. The performance of these five batsmen is tabulated below.

AN Cook is the third batsman to perform the feat against the same opposition and is also the first England batsman to perform such a feat. RA Duff, WH Ponsford chose Australia as their opposition, while AN Cook chose India as his opposition. GS Chappell scored his debut century against England and scored his farewell test century against Pakistan. M Azaruddin’s debut test century came against England while his farewell test century was against South Africa.

AN Cook of England became the seventh batsman in the annals of test cricket to score a half-century and a century in a farewell test. He scored 71 and 147 in the ongoing test against India at The Oval. The following table tabulates all the seven batsmen. He has scored 71 in the first innings and 46 not out on the third day of the ongoing test against India at The Oval. He needs four more runs for his second innings fifty. AN Cook will become the second batsman to score twin fifty in his farewell test against India. JDB Robertson of England is the other batsman. He needs seven more runs which would fetch him 600 runs.  If he gets those runs, it  would his fourth occasion of scoring 600 plus runs in a test series. He would then become the second batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 600 plus runs in test series on four or more occasions. DG Bradman has achieved the feat in six series. Engald captain JE Root and wicketkeeper-batsman JM Bairstow failed to score in the ongoing final test at The Oval against India to provide the 15th occasion of England captain and wicketkeeper scoring ducks in same innings of a test match. All such occasions are listed below. It should be noted that captains who also donned the gloves {like MS Dhoni of India and AJ Stewart of England} are not considered for the purpose of this statistics. It also provides the first such occasion by England captain and wicketkeeper failing to score in the same innings of a test against India.
