JE Root scored three centuries in consecutive tests. He scored 228 and 1 against Sri Lanka at Galle in Jan 2021, 186 and 11 against Sri Lanka at Galle in Jan 2021 and 128 not out against India at Chennai in Feb 2021 to provide the 19th occasion of an England batsman scoring three or more centuries in consecutive tests. Eng won the toss and opted to bat first in this test to provide the 55th occasion of Eng doing so against India,  26th occasion of Eng doing so against India in India and 07th occasion of Eng doing so against India in a test at Chennai

JE Root was making his 100th appearance in this test. He became the 15th Eng cricketer to appear in 100 tests and also the 69th cricketer overall.

JJ Bumrah was playing his first test on home soil. He has played 17 tests on away soil. Chennai test is his 18th test.

RJ Burns and DP Sibley – Both the Eng openers have the same score of 133 as their highest individual score. RJ Burns’ highest individual score is 133 against Aus at Birmingham in Aug 2019. DP Sibley’s highest individual score is 133 not out against SAF at Cape Town in Jan 2020

RR Pant effected his 70th dismissal when he caught RJ Burns of R Ashwin for 33. He became the eighth Indian wicket keeper to effect 70 plus dismissals. Others are – MS Dhoni {294}, SMH Kirmani {198}, KS More {130}, NR Mongia {107}, WP Saha {103}, FM Engineer {82} and PA Patel {72}

DW Lawrence became the first victim of JJ Bumrah on home soil. He was dismissed leg before wicket without scoring.

DW Lawrence’s duck in this game provides the 157th occasion of an Eng batsman scoring zero against India, 83rd occasion against India in India and 16th occasion against India at Chepauk

DW Lawrence became the 12th Eng batsman to score a duck against India while batting at number three, he also became the seventh Eng batsman to score duck while batting at number three against India in India and the second Eng batsman to score duck while batting at number three against India at Chepauk after GA Hick. GA Hick was dismissed for duck in Feb 1993. He was dismissed  leg before wicket by RK Chauhan.

JE Root scored 128* at the end of the first day’s play in this test to provide the tenth occasion of a batsman scoring a century in his 100th test. He also became the ninth batman to perform such a feat. RT Ponting is the only batsman in the annals of test cricket to score centuries in both innings of his 100th test. He scored 120 and 143 not out against South Africa at Sydney in Jan 2006.

JE Root earned the distinction of becoming the first batsman in the annals of test cricket to score century in his 98th, 99th and 100th test – He had scored 228 against Sri Lanka at Galle in Jan 2021 in his 98th  test. He had scored 186 against Sri Lanka at Galle in Jan 2021 and scored 128 not out at the end of first day’s play against India at Chennai in his 100th test.

JE Root scored fifties in his first test, 50th and 100th tests against India – His first test against India was his debut test at Nagpur in Dec 2002. He scored 73 and 20. His 50th test was against India at Vishakapatnam in Nov 1996. He scored 53 and 25 in this test. His 100th test was against India – at Chennai in Feb 2021. He scored 128* in this test.

DP Sibley and JE Root added 200 runs for the third wicket in this test to provide the 155th occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India. It also provides the 66th occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India in India.

It also provides the 18th occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the third wicket against India. It also provides the seventh occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the third wicket against India in India.

JE Root has scored 68 fifties prior to the start of the first test at Chennai against India. He shared the second place with IR Bell for most fifties by an England batsman. First place is occupied by AN Cook who has scored 90 fifties. JE Root’s 128 not out in this test was his 69th fifty and he now occupies the second place.

JE Root had an aggregate of 1421 runs against India prior to the start of the first test at Chennai against India.  He needed 79 more runs for his 1500 runs. He scored 128 not out in the first innings of this test which fetched him an aggregate of 1549 runs at the end of the first day’s play. He became the fourth England batsman to score 1500 plus runs against India. Others are AN Cook {2431}, GA Gooch {1725} and KP Pietersen {1581}

JE Root has scored 13 fifties against India prior to the start of the first test at Chennai against India. He needed one more fifty which would fetch him his 14th fifty. His 128 not out in this test was his 14th fifty. He now occupies the second place in the list of batsmen who have scored most fifties against India. The first place is occupied by AN Cook who has scored 16 fifties. JE Root went past GA Gooch on his way to second place. GA Gooch has also scored 13 fifties.

JE Root had scored 19 centuries prior to the start of the first test at Chennai against India. His 128 not out in this test fetched him 20 centuries. He became the tenth England batsman to score 20 plus centuries.

He now occupies the second place among the England captains who have scored most fifties. The first place is occupied by AN Cook who has scored 36 fifties. JE Root went past MA Atherton on his way to occupy the second place. MA Atherton has scored 30 fifties while leading England.

His 128 not out in this test fetched him his ninth century on away soil.  One more century would fetch him ten centuries and with it he would become the seventh England captain to score ten or more centuries on away soil. Others are – AN Cook {17}, KF Barrington {14}, MC Cowdrey {13}, WR Hammond {13}, AJ Strauss {11} and JB Hobbs {10}

JE Root led England for the first time against India in India and became the 17th England captain to lead England against India in India when he led England against India in the first test at Chennai.
