The first test of this test series was played at Kolkota .  Kolkota hosted its 41st test. It is the only test venue in India to host 40 plus tests. It is interesting to note that India played a test against Sri Lanka for the first time. Thus Kolkota became the 13th ground to host a test between India and Sri Lanka.

V Kohli led India against Sri Lanka at home for the first time. He became the eighth Indian captain to lead India against Sri Lanka at home. Others are – M Azharuddin {04}, N Kapil Dev {03}, MS Dhoni {03}, SR Tendulkar {03}, SM Gavaskar {01}, R Dravid {02} and V Sehwag {01}

W Saha became the fifth Indian wicket keeper to  don the gloves against Sri Lanka at home. Others are MS Dhoni {06}, NR Mongia {06}, KS More {04} and SMH Kirmani {01}

S Dhawan had an aggregate of 520 runs against Sri Lanka prior to the start of the this test.  He scored 102 runs in this match to take his total to 622. He became the eleventh Indian batsman to reach the milestone of scoring 600 plus runs against Sri Lanka

As many as 59 centuries were scored by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka prior to the start of this test. V Kohli’s century gave India its 60th century against Sri Lanka. India became the first team to score 60 plus centuries against Sri Lanka.

India and England shared the record for most centuries against Sri Lanka at home prior to the start of the test. Both teams had scored 27 centuries. V Kohli’s 104 not out in this test gave India its 28th century and with it the record  of  scoring  most centuries against Sri Lanka at home.

FDM Karunaratne had an aggregate of 940 runs in 2017 prior to the start of this test. He scored  nine  runs in this test which gave him an aggregate of 949 runs.He now stands second in the list of batsmen who  have scored most runs in 2017. D Elgar of South Africa with 1097 runs occupies the first place. FDM Karunaratne went past HM Amla who has an aggregate of 942 runs on his way to second place.

CA Pujara had an aggregate of 851 runs in 2017 and and scored 74 runs in this test which gave him an aggregate of 925 runs.  He became the fourth batsman to score 900 plus runs in 2017. Others are – D Elgar {1097}, FDM Karunaratne {949} and HM Amla {942},

V Kohli has scored ten centuries while leading India in tests prior to the start of this test. His 104 not out in this test fetched him 11th century.. He now shares the record for most centuries by an Indian captain with SM Gavaskar. SM Gavaskar has scored eleven centuries while leading India.

V Kohli had scored 14 fifties while leading India prior to the start of this test. His 104 not out in this game fetched him his 15th fifty. He became the sixth Indian captain to score 15 or more fifties. Others are – MS Dhoni {29}. SM Gavaskar {25}, M Azharuddin {18}, SC Ganguly {18} and MAK Pataudi {18}.

S Dhawan had scored nine fifties as an opening batsman prior to the start of the series. His 94 in this test gave him  his tenth fifty.He became the sixteenth Indian opening batsman to score ten or more fifties.

V Kohli had led in six tests against Sri Lanka prior to this test. Kolkata test was his seventh test. He became the second most capped Indian captain against Sri Lanka. M Azharuddin has led India in eight tests against Sri Lanka.

V Kohli had  pouched 28 catches while leading India  prior to the start of this series. He took two catches which gave him 30 catches. He became the fifth Indian captain to pouch 30 plus catches. Ohters are – M Azharuddin {50}, SM Gavaskar {45}, SC Ganguly {37} and R Dravid {33}

India had posted nine three figure partnerships for the first wicket against Sri Lanka. India posted 166 runs partnership for the first wicket in this test which gave India ten three figure partnership for the first wicket. Inida becme the first and the only team to post ten three figure partnerships for the first wicket against Sri Lanka.

L Chandimal became the sixth Sri Lankan captain to lead Sri Lanka against India in India. Others are – A Ranatunga {07}, MS Atapattu {03}, LRD Mendis {03}, KC Sangakkara {03} and B Warnapura {01}.

V Kohli became the eighth Indian captain to lead India against Sri Lanka in India. Others are – M Azharuddin {04}, MS Dhoni {03}, N Kapil Dev {03}, SR Tendulkar {03}, R Dravid {02}, SM Gavaskar {01} and V Sehwag {01}
