KL Rahul of India scored 73 not out at the end of the third day of the Kolkata test against Sri Lanka to post his ninth half century as an opening batsman in the calendar year 2017. He now shares the record for most half centuries scored by an opening batsman in any calendar year in the history of test cricket with CPS Chauhan of India. CPS Chauhan had scored nine half centuries while opening for India in the calendar year 1979. The half centuries scored by these two batsmen are listed below
