West Indies vs Pakistan

For the first time ever in the annals of One day games, when rival skippers of this game, went out for toss, they had ten thousand plus runs to their credit. This is also the first such happening in World Cup Games. For the fourth time in the first game of the World Cup matches, a captain has inserted the opposition. This game provides the 1000^th match of the decade – 2000-2007.

World Cup debutants in this game for West Indies and Pakistan are as under – West Indies – DJ Bravo, DR Smith, D Ramdin, JE Taylor and DB Powell : Pakistan – Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Nazir, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Naved-ul-Hasan, Ifthikar Anjum, Umar Gul and Danish Kaneraia

Chris Gayle became the first World Cup Victim of Umar Gul who was making his debut in World Cup. He was caught by Kamran Akmal for two runs to become his first World Cup Victim. Kamran Akmal was also making is World cup debut in this game

Chris Gayle facing the first delivery in this World cup makes him the only batsman to face the first delivery in two editions of the World cup. In 2003, he had faced the first delivery against South Africa at Cape Town. What is more interesting is he was dismissed for an identical score of two runs on both occasions. In 2003 he was bowled by SM Pollock for 2 and in this game he was caught by Kamran Akmal of Umar Gul for two runs.

Rival Skippers Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul-Huq have pouched 100 plus catches prior to the start of the game. {Lara and Inzamam had 115 and 109 catches respectively}

For the second time in the history of World Cup no hundreds were scored in the opening matches. The other edition in which an opening game did not have a century is the 1999 edition.

Inzamam-ul-Huq was dismissed leg before wicket to Dwayne Smith for 36, providing the 39^th dismissal through leg before wicket in his 376 matches One day career. He is now on par with Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka who has been dismissed leg before wicket on 39 occasions in his 378 match one day career.

Australia and Scotland

RT Ponting completed 1000 runs in the World Cup when he drove DR Brown to the long on for a boundary. This boundary took RT Ponting past 1000 to 1002. He became the second Aussie batsman to aggregate 1000 runs in World Cup after Mark Waugh {1004}. With RT Ponting completing 1000 runs in this game, Australia earned the distinction of becoming the first country in World Cup to have two batsmen with 1000 plus runs. RT Ponting’s second boundary of the match, a ferocious pull to the mid wicket of DR Brown took him past Mark Waugh’s 1004 making him the highest run getter for Australia in World Cup. This boundary gave RT Ponting 1006 World Cup runs. At the end of the Aussie innings, RT Ponting’s World cup aggregate stood at 1111.

Aussie openers Gilchrist and Hayden were both dismissed leg before wicket providing the fifth instance of both the openers dismissed leg before wicket in the World Cup games.

RT Ponting with his hundred in this game which was his fourth in the World cup equalled the World Cup record for most hundreds jointly held by Mark Waugh. SR Tendulkar and SC Ganguly. Ponting’s four hundreds are as under

RT Ponting with five sixes in this innings has surpassed the record for most sixes in the World Cup held by SC Ganguly {23 sixes}. In this innings RT Ponting got better of Viv Richards’s 22 sixes also. RT Ponting, SC Ganguly and Viv Richards are the only three batsmen to have 20 plus sixes in World Cup.

RT Ponting with his 113 in this game equalled the record for most hundreds by a captain in the World Cup – three – held by SC Ganguly of India

RT Ponting’s hundred in this game was his 15^th hundred while leading Australia. His 15 hundreds include the one hundred against Asia Eleven at Melbourne on 10.01.05. Ponting’s hundred in this game provides the 116^th hundred by a captain. Ponting became the first centurion in the ninth edition of the World Cup 2007

Australia’s 334-6 in 50.0 overs provide the 29^th instance of a team posting 300 plus in the World Cup games. It was the 8^th occasion that Australia has posted 300 plus total in World Cup. The last three occasions are by Australia – at Centurion in 2003, at Johannesburg in 2003 and now at St Kitts in 2007. It is interesting to note that 18 totals of 300 plus have been posted against non test playing nations {including the one posted against Sri Lanka when they were not granted the test status}

DR Brown’s figures of 1 for 86 makes him the eleventh bowler to concede 80 plus runs in the World Cup

Australia won this game by 203 runs margin. This win provides the third instance of a World cup game won by 200 plus run margin.

Canada and Kenya

Anderson Cummins becomes the second cricketer to represent two countries in the World Cup Games. He has represented West Indies in World Cup in six games. The first cricketer to represent two countries in World Cup games is Kepler Wessels. He played 03 World Cup games for Australia and nine games for South Africa.

Steve Tikolo became the most capped player for Kenya in World Cup. This game was his 21^st appearance. Prior to this game, he was on par with KO Otieno and MA Suji who had 20 World Cup appearances

Steve Tikolo with his knock of 50 plus runs in this game provides the fourth instance of a Kenyan captain registering fifty in World Cup. As far as Tikolo is concerned, it is his third fifty in WC games. His 72 not out in this game is the highest innings by a Kenyan captain in WC games

MA Ouma’s fifty {58} for Kenya in this game provides the 47^th instance of a batsman registering a fifty on WC debut. His 58 provides the 37^th instance of an wicket keeper batsman registering a fifty in the World Cup

CJO Smith’s fifty {51 not out} against Australia provides the 49^th instance of a batsman registering fifty including hundreds on WC debut. His 51 not out provides the 38^th instance of an wicket keeper batsman registering a fifty in the World Cup

Sri Lanka and Bermuda

DPM Jayawardene became the seventh Sri Lankan captain to lead Sri Lanka in World Cup games.

DPM Jayawardene’s knock of 84 in this game provided the tenth instance of a Sri Lankan captain registering a fifty in the World Cup game. Incidentally this score is the highest score by Jayawardene in World Cup – an improvement over his 45 against Kenya at Southampton in 1999.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara were concerned in a three figure stand for the third wicket in this game. This provides the first instance of a three figure stand in the World Cup 2007. This provides the 145^th three figure stand for various wickets in World Cup games.

This three figure stand is the 37^th three figure stand for the third wicket in all the editions of the World Cup. This stand provides the 12^th instance of a three figure stand by Sri Lankan batsmen for various wickets in WC games and the fourth stand of 100 plus runs for the third wicket.

150 runs were added for the third wicket between Jayawardene and Sangakkara in this game provides the 31^st instance of a three figure stand of 150 plus runs in World Cup games.

Sangakkara’s 76 in this game provides the ninth instance of a wicket keeper registering 75 plus runs excluding hundreds in World Cup.

Sangakkara’s 76 provides the fourth instance of a Sri Lankan Wicketkeeper registering fifty in WC Games and remains the highest by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper in WC game.

LPC Silva’s fifty – 55 not out – in this game provides the 50^th instance of a batsman registering a fifty including hundreds on World Cup debut.

Jayawardene’s 84 and IH Romaine’s zero provide the ninth instance of rival captains registering zero and fifty in World Cup games. The complete list read thus

Bermuda were all out for 78 for a total less than Jaywardene’s individual score of 84. This provides the eighth instance of a batsman’s total greater than the team’s total in World Cup games. The complete list read thus

F Mahroof with his four for 23 in this game became the 17^th bowler to capture four or more wickets on WC debut. He is the first Sri Lankan bowler to achieve the feat.

Opening batsman JP Bray became the 51st batsman to register a fifty on World Cup debut. WJ Porterfield’s zero and JP Bray’s 115 not out provides the sixth instance of openers registering zero and fifty in WC Cup games.

JP Gray’s 115 not out make him the 12th batsman to score a hundred on World Cup debut. W Porterfield’s zero and JP Bray’s 115 not out provide the second instance of openers registering zero and a hundred in WC games. The first such instance was witnessed when Aamir Sohail failed to score and Ramiz Raja got 119 not out for Pakistan against New Zealand at Christchurch on 18.03.92

JP Gray carried the bat through the allocation of over while making 115 not out. He is the 12^th batsman to carry the bat through the over allocation in World Cup Games. The complete list reads thus

England and New Zealand

Ed Joyce became the third batsman to be dismissed by the first legitimate delivery of a side batting first in World Cup. The other two are JG Wright of New Zealand and Hannan Sarkar of Bangladesh.

Franklin earns the distinction of becoming the only bowler in the World Cup debut to take a wicket off his first legitimate delivery.

Kevin Pieterson with his 60 in this game became the ninth England batsman to register a fifty on World Cup debut.

South Africa and Netherlands

The overnight rain delayed the start and the match was a 40 over a side.

South Africa added 114 runs for the second wicket – after losing the first without a run on the board – through GC Smith and JH Kallis. This stand provides the 12^th three figure partnership by South African batsmen in World Cup for various wickets and also the 38^th three figure partnership for the first wicket by various countries in World Cup.

AB de Villers’s zero and GC Smith’s 66 in this game provides the sixth instance of openers with zero and fifty in World Cup games. This is the second such instance against Netherlands in the World Cup. The first occasion was New Zealand openers CM Spearman {68} and NJ Astle {zero} at Baroda on 17.02.96

HH Gibbs became the fourth batsman in the World Cup to clout seven or more sixes in an innings. The other three are RT Ponting {08}, IVA Richards {07} and SC Ganguly {07}

This game witnessed for the first time in the annals of one day games, three three figure partnerships in an innings – 114 for the second wicket between GC Smith and JH Kallis : 105 for the third wi
cket between JH Kallis and HH Gibbs and 134* for the fourth wicket between JH Kallis and MV Boucher. This is also the first occasion when a team has posted century partnership for the consecutive second, third and fourth wickets in the history of one day games.

South Africa’s 353 for 3 is a record score for a forty over game. It is also their best team total in a World Cup game. Previous best – 328-3 in 50.0 overs against Netherlands at Rawalpindi on 16.02.96

For the fifth time in a World Cup game, four batsmen registered fifty plus scores in an innings. GC Smith {66}, JH Kallis {128 not out}, HH Gibbs {72} and MV Boucher {75 not out} were the batsmen who registered fifties

HH Gibbs created a World record for most sixes in over – He hit six sixes in an over – never achieved by any batsman in the annals of one day games – the bowler was Dan van Bunge – his fourth over

MV Boucher created a record for the fastest fifty in WC games. He made 51 of 21 deliveries. The earlier record was in the name of Brian Lara who had made a fifty in 23 delivers against Canada in the 2003 edition.

For the first time in World Cup, a South African Wicket keeper registered a fifty through Mark Boucher who made 75 not out in this game.

India vs Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh are meeting for the first time in World Cup.

Tendulkar is now on par with Javagal Srinath for most World Cup appearance for India. Both are on 34 appearances.

Rahul Dravid is the fifth Indian captain to lead in WC games. Others are M Azharuddin {23}, Kapil Dev {15}, SC Ganguly {11} and S Venkataraghavan {06}. Azharuddin with 23 captaincy assignments holds the World record for World Cup games.

For the first time in the World Cup a team has three batsmen with 10,000 plus runs – Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid.

When Tendulkar was dismissed for seven in this game, it was the seventh occasions that he was dismissed for single digit runs including zeroes in the World Cup.

Ganguly’s fifty in this game is his 65^th fifty of his one day career and his second in the World Cup. It was his fourth fifty against Bangladesh

Mashrafe Mortaza’s 4 for 38 in this game provides the 78^th instance of a bowler capturing exact four wickets in World Cup. He earns the distinction of becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to capture four wickets in a World Cup game. His effort provides the 17^th instance of a Bangla bowler’s exact four wickets in ODIs. There are four instances of a Bangladesh bowler accounting for five plus wickets hauls in ODIs.

Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal, Saqibul Hasan and Mushfiqar Rahim became the 53^rd, 54^th and 55^th batsmen in the World Cup to register fifty plus scores on WC debut. They become the seventh, eighth and ninth batsmen to achieve the feat in 2007 World Cup.

Tamim Iqbal earns the distinction of becoming the first Bangladeshi batsman to register a fifty on WC debut. Tamim Iqbal also becomes the youngest cricketers at the age of 17 years and 362 days to register a fifty on World Cup debut

Saurav Ganguly’s 66 and Tamim Iqbal’s 51 provides the 26^th instance of rival openers registering fifties excluding hundreds in World Cup games.

Tamim Iqbal became the fourth youngest debutant in the World cup. He made his debut at the age of 17 years and 362 days. Talha Jubair of Bangladesh vs West Indies at Benoni in 2003 at the age of 17 years and 70 days : SP Pasqual of Sri Lanka vs New Zealand at Nottingham in 1979 at the age of 17 years and 237 days : TM Odoya of Kenya vs India at Cuttack in 1996 at the age of 17 years and 282 days. Tamim Iqbal is one of the seven Bangladesh cricketers who have made their debut in World Cup as youngest cricketers.

Tamim Iqbal and Saqibul Hasan’s fifties in this game provides the eightH instance of two or more batsmen registering fifties in World Cup debut.

Tamim Iqbal’s 51, Saqibul Hasan’s 53 and Mushfiqar Rahim’s fifties in this game provides the second instance of three batsmen registering fifties in World Cup. The first occasion was witnessed in the game between England vs India at Lord’s in 1975 edition when DL Amiss {137}, KWR Fletcher {68} and CM Old {51*} scored fifties

Mushfiqar Rahim’s 59 not out in this game provides the 41^st instance of a Wicket Keeper registering fifties in World Cup and he is the first Bangla Wicket keeper to do so in a World Cup

Bangladesh’s win over India by five wickets is their second win in World Cup. Their first win was against Pakistan in 1999 – Northampton – 31.05.99 – Bangladesh won by 62 runs

England and Canada

England dropped Flintoff for this game. It is perhaps the third occasion, that a key player of the team is dropped from the playing Eleven – the other two instances being Sunil Gavaskar of India and Denis Lilee of Australia in 1975 World Cup

England capped Indian origin Ravi Bopara for this game. He becomes the 85^th England cricketer to appear in World Cup. England are fielding two Indian origin cricketers – Ravi Bopara and Monty Panesar – for this game

Ed Joyce and MP Vaughn added 101 runs for the first wicket, providing the seventh instance of a first wicket three figure stand in the World Cup. The only other country to have seven opening wicket stands of 100 plus runs in World Cup is South Africa.

Australia vs Netherlands

Gilchrist became the first Aussie batsman to score 100 fours in the World Cup. He reached the milestone with his seventh boundary in this innings. He becomes the fourth batsman in the World Cup to score 100 fours. The other three are – Tendulkar {187}, BC Lara {108} and P A de Silva {107}

Brad Hodge’s 123 provides the 17^th hundred by an Aussie batsman in World Cup games.

MJ Clarke and BJ Hodge added 204 runs for the fourth wicket – a record stand for the fourth wicket in World Cup obliterating the hitherto best of 168 runs between LK Germon and CZ Harris for New Zealand against Australia at Madras on 11.03.96.

Australia’s feat provides the third instance of a team posting 300 plus runs in consecutive games of a single edition of the World cup. England’s 322-6 against New Zealand at The Oval on 09.06.83 and 333-9 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 11.03.83 in 1983 edition and India’s 329-2 against Kenya at Bristol on 23.05.99 and 373-6 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26.05.99 in 1999 edition are the other two.

Australia have created a World Cup record of posting 300 plus runs in three consecutive games, 359 for 2 vs India at Johannesburg on 23.03.03 : 331 for 4 vs Scotland at St Kitts on 14.03.07 and 358 for 5 vs Netherlands at St Kitts on 18.03.07

MJ Clarke’s 93 not out and Brad Hodge’s 123 in this game provides the second instance of one batsman registering a ton and another ninety in the World Cup game. The other instance also involved Aussie batsmen – AC Gilchrist {99} and RT Ponting {114} against Sri Lanka at Centurion on 03.03.03 in 2003 edition.

Brad Hodge’s 123 in this game provide the 13^th instance of a batsman registering “One-Two-Three” or not out One-Two-Three in One day Internationals. However Hodge remains the only batsman to achieve the feat in a World Cup game.

Pakistan and Ireland

Inzamam-ul-Huq has now 34 WC appearances and has overtaken Javed Miandad’s 33 WC appearances for Pakistan. Inzamam now stands to second to Wasim Akram’s 38 WC appearances.

In Pakistan’s Innings of 132, Extras of 29 was the highest score providing the tenth instance of Extras being the highest score in World Cup.

Ireland won this game by three wickets on Duckworth Lewis Method causing the biggest upset of the World Cup.

England and Canada

The other instance also involved Aussie batsmen – AC Gilchrist {99} and RT Ponting {114} against Sri Lanka at Centurion on 03.03.03 in 2003 edition.

Brad Hodge’s 123 in this game provide the 13^th instance of a batsman registering “One-Two-Three” or not out One-Two-Three in One day Internationals. However Hodge remains the only batsman to achieve the feat in a World Cup game.

India vs Bermuda

Malachi Jones became the first bowler to take a wicket of the first delivery in a World Cup match when he had Robin Uthappa caught by Leverock . He was making his World cup debut for Bermuda

Virender Sehwag by registering 114 in this game, improved his previous World cup best of 82 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2003 {Finals}. It was his first three figure innings in World Cup. His 114 in this game provides the 14^th instance of a hundred by Indian batsmen in World Cup.

Ganguly-Sehwag added 202 runs for the second wicket providing India’s 18^th three figure stand in World Cup. It is also the sixth three figure stand for the second wicket in World Cup.

Ganguly-Sehwag stand of 202 runs provide the 240^th instance of a three figure partnership by Indian batsmen in One day Internationals. Only Australia is ahead with 250 three figure stands {204 run stand between MJ Clarke and BJ Hodge against Netherlands on 18.03.07 was the 250^th stand}

Ganguly hit his 25^th Six in World Cup when he hit his second six. Ganguly and RT Ponting have now 25 sixes in World Cup.

SC Ganguly and V Sehwag’s 202 run stand for the second wicket provides the eighth instance of a 200 run partnership in World Cup

India’s 413 for 5 in this game is the highest total ever recorded by a team in World Cup. It was an improvement over Sri Lanka’s 398 for 5 against Kenya at Kandy on 06.03.96 in 1996 edition. The total was India’s highest in a World Cup game – an improvement over the hitherto best of 373-6 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26.05.99 in 1999 edition.

India became the fourth country to post 400 plus runs in a World Cup game. The other three countries are Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Indian batsmen registered two three figure partnerships in this game – 204 between SC Ganguly and V Sehwag for the second wicket and 122 runs between Yuvaraj Singh and SR Tendulkar for the fifth wicket providing the ninth instance of two or more three figure partnerships in an innings in a World Cup game. This is the second instance involving Indian batsman. The first instance was witnessed when Gavaskar {61}, NS Sidhu {51}, Vengsarkar {63} and M Azharuddin {54 not out} registered fifties against Australia at Delhi on 22.10.87 in the 1987 edition

122 runs between Yuvaraj Singh and SR Tendulkar for the fifth wicket provides the eleventh three figure partnership for the fifth wicket in a World Cup game. It is India’s second three figure stand for the fifth wicket, the first one being 141 runs between AD Jadeja and Robin Singh against Australia at The Oval on 04.06.99 in 1999.

SC Ganguly {89}, V Sehwag {114}, Yuvaraj Singh {87} and Tendulkar {57 not out} registered fifties in this game, providing the sixth instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in a World Cup game.

The 18 sixes scored by Indian batsmen equalled the most sixes by a team registered in One dayers by South Africa against Netherlands on 16.03.07 at St Kitts.

D Leverock’s figures of 10.0-0-96-1 provides the third most expensive figures in the World Cup, after Snedden’s 12.0-1-105-2 {NZl vs Eng at The Oval in 1979} and ALF de Mel’s 10.0-0-97-1 {Srl vs Win at Karachi in 1987}. In fact, Snedden, de Mel and Leverock are the only three bowlers to concede 90 plus runs in a World Cup game.

New Zealand and Kenya

Steve Tikolo becomes the first skipper from non test playing nations to lead in 50 ODIs. When he went out for toss with Stephen Fleming of New Zealand, Tikolo was leading Kenya for the 50^th time

When Stephen Fleming and RL Taylor added 105 runs for the second wicket after the first had fallen at zero, their stand provided the second instance of a three figure partnership after the first had fallen at Zero in World Cup. The first occasion was when South Africa’s GC Smith and JH Kallis added 114 runs after they lost AB de Villers for zero against Netherlands at St Kitts on 16.03.07 in this edition.

Lou Vincent’s zero and Stephen Fleming’s 60 in this game provides the seventh instance of an openers scoring zero and fifty excluding hundreds in the World Cup.

Stephen Fleming’s run out after making 60. provides the 49^th instance of a batsman run out after registering a fifty including hundreds in World Cup games. His run out dismissal provides the 19^th instance of an opening batsman to be dismissed run out in World Cup games. He is the third New Zealand opening batsman to be dismissed run out in World Cup.

Stephen Fleming is the seventh captain to be dismissed run out after registering a fifty in World Cup. He is the third New Zealand captain to suffer the ignominy of being run out after registering a fifty. The other two are MD Crowe and GP Howarth.

SP Fleming {60}. RL Taylor {85}, SB Styris {63} and McMillan {71} registered fifties in New Zealand’s innings providing the seventh instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in World Cup.

New Zealand’s 331-7 in this game provides the third instance of 300 plus runs in the World Cup. The other two instances are 307-5 against East Africa at Birmingham in 1975 and 307-8 against Holland at Baroda in 1996. New Zealand’s 331-7 in this game is its highest score in World Cup.

Sanath Jayasuriya with seven sixes in this innings now holds the record of most sixes in a career. His tally of sixes stood at 231. Prior to this game Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi had 224 sixes to his credit. Shahid Afridi hit one six against Zimbabwe taking his tally to 225.

Muthaiah Muralitharan conceded 10000 runs in their one day career during this game. He needed two runs for “Bowler’s Ten thousand” prior to this match. Tendulkar and Ganguly registered hundreds against Namibia at Pietermaritzburg on 23.02.03. Tendulkar scored 152 and Ganguly registered 112 not out in this game providing the fourth instance of two batsmen registering hundreds for the same team in the World Cup. Namibia were all out for 130. This total was less than the individual score of 152 by Sachin Tendulkar. This instance provides the fifth instance of a batsman’s individual score greater than the opponent team’s total in World Cup. As on date there are seven such instances in the World Cup. Tendulkar registered his fourth World Cup hundred while making 152 and emulated Mark Waugh of Australia who has also scored four hundreds in the World Cup. This was the second victory margin by 200 plus runs in the World Cup after the England’s 202 runs triumph over India in the inaugural match on 07.06.75 of the first ever World Cup 1975. In this match Namibia were bundled out for 45 runs. Three Australian batsmen – Hayden {88}, A Symonds {59} and DS Lehmann {50 not out} scored more than Namibia’s total of 45 runs. This match provides the unique instance of three batsman’s individual score which were greater than the team’s total. McGrath registered the World Cup’s best figures of seven for 15 in this match. He also became the second bowler to capture seven wickets in the World Cup. As on date there are three bowlers who have taken seven wickets in the World Cup. McGrath’s figure of seven for 15 represent the most wickets conceding least runs , while WW Davis’s seven for 51 represent the most wickets conceding most runs in the World Cup {Note – 15 and 51 have 1 and 5 opposite to each other}. Netherland-Namibia fixture at Bloemfontien on 03.03.03 witnessed the fifth instance of two batsmen from the same team registering hundreds in the World Cup. JF Kloppenburg and KJJ van Noortwijk of Netherlands registered 121 and 134 respectvely in this game. JF Kloppnburg shone with the leather also by capturing four wickets conceding 42 runs. He is the only all rounder in the World Cup to register a hundred and take four wickets in the same game. JF Kloppenburg and Adeel Raja returned with identical figures of 4 for 42 in this match providing the first of two instances of two bowlers from the same team returning with identical figures in a match.

The match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Durban on 03.03.03 ended in a tie on Duckworth Lewis Method. This is the second instance of a tied match in World Cup. The first instance of a tied match was between Australia and South Africa at Birmingham on 17.06.99.

Kenya were dismissed for 104 by West Indies at Kimberley on 04.03.03. Chris Gayle scored 119 for West Indies. This match provides the seventh instance of a batsman’s individual score greater than the opponent team’s total in World Cup.

VC Drakes of West Indies earned the distinction of becoming the third bowler to capture five wickets in two games in the same world cup edition after GJ Gilmour of Australia and ALF de Mel of Sri Lanka. MS Atapattu carried the bat through while making 103 not for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe on 15.03.03 to provide the 11^th instance of such a feat in World Cup. Prior to Atapattu’s feat Iswar Maharaj of Canada had earned the distinction of carrying the bat through over allocation when he scored 53 not out against South Africa at East London on 27.02.03.

Ganguly’s 111 against Kenya at Durban on 20.03.03 was his 11^th hundred as captain in One day games. It was the then record for most hundreds by a captain in One dayers. He wrested the record from Sanath Jayasuriya who had scored ten hundreds while leading Sri Lanka. As of now RT Ponting of Australia holds the record for most hundreds by a captain. Saurav Ganguly became the third batsman to register four hundreds in World Cup after Mark Waugh of Australia and Sachin Tendulkar of India. The batsmen who have achieved the feat are ST Tendulkar of India {seven fifties in 2003 editon}, MD Crowe (five fifties in 1992 edition}, Javed Miandad {five fifties in 1992 edition}, Mohd Azharuddin of India {four fifties in 1992 edition}. Adam Gilchrist remains the only wicket keeper batsman to register four fifties in the same edition.

RT Ponting’s 140 not out in this game represents the highest individual innings by a batsman in the finals of the World Cup obliterating IVA Richards’s 138 not out in the finals of 1979 edition between West Indies and England at Lord’s on 22.06.79

Ganguly hit 17 fours and seven sixes in this game – thus amassing 110 runs from the boundaries alone which remains a record for most runs through boundaries in the World Cup. Dravid became the third wicket keeper to register a hundred in the World Cup after DL Houghton {1987} and A Flower {115 not out}. Ajay Jadeja’s 100 not out in the game between India and Australia at The Oval on 04.06.99 went in vain as Australia won this game by 77 runs, providing the ninth instance of a batsman’s century going in vain in World Cup. Mark Waugh registered his fourth hundred in World Cup when he made 104 in the match between Australia and Zimbabwe at Lord’s 09.06.99. With the Zimbabwe opening batsman NC Johnson also registering a hundred in this game -132 not out – the feat of both the openers registering hundreds was witnessed for the first time in the World Cup.

Saqlain Mushtaq became the second bowler in the World Cup to perform the Hat trick. He claimed the wickets of HK Olonga, AG Huckle, M Mbangwa of the first three successive deliveries of his seventh over. Saqlain Mushtaq’s feat was the first hat trick to conclude a game in World Cup as well as in One day Internationals.

Kirsten was associated in two three figure partnership during the course of his 188 not out. He added 116 runs with WJ Cronje for the second wicket and 145 runs in an unfinished stand for the fourth wicket with D Cullinan. This provides the third instance of two three figure partnerships in the same innings in World Cup.

Paul Strang with his four for 40 in the game between Zimbabwe and West Indies at Hyderabad on 16.02.96, became the ninth bowler to capture four wickets on World Cup debut,

Netherlands became the 14^th country to play an official One day game when it met New Zealand at Baroda on 17.02.96. Nettherlands is the seventh country to play an official one dayer without attaining the test status. The other countries are, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, East Africa and Canada. The fist three named were later granted the Official Status as Test playing nation. New Zealand’s innings contained four fifties providing the fourth instance of four fifties including hundreds in World Cup, CM Spearman {64}, SP Fleming {66}, CL Cairns {52} and AC Parore {55} were the four batsmen who registered fifties. P Cantrell, an Australian, who settled down in Netherlands, almost played for Australia. In fact, he took two substitute catches in the second innings to dismiss Alec Stewert and Angus Fraser in the test match between Australia and England at Brisbane in 1990-91. New Zealand deployed eight bowlers in Netherland’s innings providing the fourth instance of eight bowlers used by a team in World Cup games. NMK Smith became the first batsman in the World Cup to retire with illness in the game between England and UAE at Peshawar on 18.02.96.

The first instance was Chappell brothers – Ian and Greg – run out in the game between Australia and West Indies at Lord’s on 21.06.75. Aravinda de Silva’s 91 in this game provided the 16^th instance of a ninety in World Cup. Aravinda de Silva became the first Sri Lankan batsman to register ninety in World Cup.

Mark Waugh scored 130 in the game against Kenya at Vizag on 23.02.06. His hundred in this game represented the seventh hundred by an Aussie batsman in World Cup. Mark Waugh’s 130 for Australia and K Otieno’s 85 for Kenya provides the fourth instance of rival openers registering a hundred and a fifty in World Cup. There are 13 such instances in World Cup. Waugh brothers – Mark and Steve – were concerned in a 207 run partnership for the third wicket in this game, providing the first instance of a 200 plus runs partnership in World Cup games. As of now there are six partnerships of 200 plus runs in World Cup. Maurice Odumbe became the first Kenyan captain to register a fifty in World Cup. He made an exact 50 in this game. Javed Miandad became the only Cricketer to represent Pakistan in the first six editions of the World Cup when he appeared in the game between Pakistan and UAE at Gujranwala on 24.02.06.

This is the second instance in the World Cup when the Man of the Match award was shared between two cricketers. The first instance was at Nagpur on 31.10.87 in the game between India and New Zealand. Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Sharma shared the Award in this game.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 137 for India against Sri Lanka at Delhi on 02.03.96 could not clinch a win for India, providing the sixth instance of a batasman’s hundred going in vain in World Cup. Tendulkar became the third centurion to be run out in World Cup

Tendulkar with his 137 in this game became the fourth batsman to register four consecutive fifties in World Cup games after G Fowler of England, DC Boon of Australia and Navjoth Singh Sidhu of India. Tendulkar’s performances read thus – 127* vs Kenya at Cuttack on 18.02.96, 70 vs West Indies at Gwalior on 21.02.96 : 90 vs Australia at Mumbai on 27.02.96 and 137 vs Sri Lanka at Delhi on 02.03.96

In the match between England and Pakistan at Karachi on 03.03.96, England openers – Robin Smith and MA Atherton registered 75 and 66 respectively to provide the 20^th instance of both the openers registering fifties in the World Cup. MA Atherton’s 66 provides the 10^th instance of England captain registering a fifty in World Cup.

This match also witnessed the three fifties in an innings by rival teams, the second such instance in World Cup. The first such instance was in the game between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at New Plymouth on 23.02.92 The batsmen who scored fifties in this game are as under

RT Ponting’s 102 for Australia and RB Richardson’s 93 for West Indies at Jaipur on 04.03.96 provides the third instance of rival batsmen registering a hundred and ninety in the World Cup games. RT Ponting became the fourth centurion to be dismissed run out in the World Cup. RB Richardson became the third captain to be dismissed in nineties. The other two are Mohd Azharuddin {93 vs Aus at Brisbane on 29.02.92} and Martin Crowe {91 vs Pak at Auckland on 21.03.92}. Ponting became the seventh batsmen to see his World Cup hundred go in vain.

In the match between South Africa and Netherlands at Rawalpindi on 05.03.96, South African openers G Kirsten and AC Hudson registered 83 and 161 respectively to provide the fifth instance of openers registering a fifty and a hundred in World Cup.

The match between Sri Lanka and Kenya at Kandy on 06.03.96 saw Sri Lanka posting 398 for five wickets which remains the highest total by a team in the World Cup.. PA de Silva’s 145 for Sri Lanka and S Tikolo’s 96 for Kenya provide the fourth instance of rival batsmen registering a hundred and ninety in the World Cup. This game also witnessed the seventh instance of rival captains scoring zero and a fifty with Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga scoring 75 not out and Kenyan skipper Maurice Odumbe failing to open his account.

Rashid Latif of Pakistan emulated Syed Kirmani of India and Jimmy Adams of West Indies as he effected five dismissals {four catches and one stumping} in the game against New Zealand at Lahore on 06.03.96 to become the third Wicket keeper to effect five dismissals in the World Cup

India won their second World Cup fixture against the traditional rivals Pakistan at Bangalore on 09.03.96 by 39 runs. Navjoth Singh Sidhu’s 93 in this game provided the 21^st fifty in the World Cup and he is the third Indian batsman to be dismissed in nineties.

BC Lara’s 111 for West Indies against South Africa at Karachi on 11.03.96 provide the second instance of a Nelson in World Cup.

In the game between Australia and England at Madras on 11.03.96 rival batsmen registered hundreds. CZ Harris for New Zealand scored 130 while Mark Waugh for Australia registered 110. Mark Waugh became the first batsman to register three hundreds in the same edition of the World Cup. CZ Harris became the eighth batsman to see his World Cup hundred going in vain.

1996 edition of World Cup witnessed four hundreds going in vain, which is a record for most number of hundreds going in vain in a single edition of World Cup – Aamer Sohail of Pakistan : SR Tendulkar of India : RT Ponting of Australia and CZ Harris of New Zealand are the batsmen who have witnessed their hundreds in a losing cause

The World Cup editions of 1992, 1999 and 2003 have witnessed three hundreds going in vain.

The first ever instance of awarding the game by default to the opponents occurred in the game between India and Sri Lanka at Calcutta on 13.03.96. Sri Lanka was awarded the match due to crowd disturbance with Indian score card reading 120-8 in 34.1 over. Clive Lloyd was the Match refree. Roshan Mahanama became the second batsman to retire with illness in the World Cup after making 58 runs.

The final of the 1996 edition was won by Sri Lanka as they trounced Australia by seven wickets at Lahore on 17.03.96. PA de Silva scored 107 not out in this game. He became the third batsman to register a hundred in the finals of the World Cup. CH Lloyd {102} and IVA Richards {138 not out} – both of West Indies – had registered hundreds in 1975 and 1979 editions of the World Cup
