SR Tendulkar and ST Jayasuriya have played 444 games prior to the start of the world cup. SR Tendulkar’s appearance for India in the inaugural game against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 19.02.01 would be his 445th one day game and with it he would earn the distinction of becoming the most capped cricketer in the history of one day gmaes

SR Tendulkar would become the second cricketer to appear in six world cups. Javed Miandad holds the record of playing six world Cups. He represented Pakistan in 1975, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1996 world Cups. SR Tendulkar of India has played in five world Cups – 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003 and 2007.

SR Tendulkar has played 36 world cup games prior to the start of the ensuing world Cup. He requires four more games to become the second cricketer to appear in 40 plus world Cup games

SR Tendulkar has an aggregate of 189 boundary fours prior to the start of the ensuing world cup. He requires eleven more boundary fours for 200 boundary fours with which he would become the first batsman to score 200 plus boundary fours in the world cup.

SR Tendulkar has an aggregate of 19 boundary sixes prior to the start of the ensuing world cup. He requires one more boundary six for 20 boundary sixes. Zaheer Khan would then become the fifth left arm bowler to aggregate 25 wickets after Wasim Akram {55}. WPUJC Vaas {49}, GB Hogg {34} and ST Jayasuriya {27} and the third left arm pace bowler after Wasim Akram and WPUJC Vaas to achieve the milestone

A Nehra who has an aggregate of 15 wickets prior to the start of the world cup require five more wickets for his 20 wickets. If he gets there, he would become he would become the the eighth left arm bowler to total 20 plus wickets in the world cup. Others are – Wasim Akram, WPUJC Vaas, GB Hogg, ST Jayasuriya, Zaheer Khan and GI Allott. A Nehra would become the fifth left arm pace to perform the feat after Wasim Akram, WPUJC Vaas, Zaheer Khan and GI Allott

MS Dhoni who has led India in 93 one day games needs seven more games to his 100th game as captain. Should he get there, he would then become 15th captain in the history of one day games to lead a team on 100 or more occasions. He would become the third Indian captain to earn the distinction after M Azharuddin {174} and SC Ganguly {147}

MS Dhoni would become the first wicket keeper captain to lead ta team in 100 plus games in the history of one day games

MS Dhoni would become the sixth captain to lead India in world cup games. Others are – M Azharuddin {23}, N Kapil Dev {15}, SC Ganguly {11}, S Venkataraghavan {06} and R Dravid {03}

Prior to the start of the world cup, 81 captains have led various teams in the earlier world cup editions. At the end of 2011 edition, the captains who have led various teams would be 93.

As the inaugural game of this edition would be between Bangladesh and India at Dhaka on 19.02.11, both the teams will be led by new captains. Bangladesh would be led by Shakib Al Hasan while India will be led by MS Dhoni. They would become the 82nd and 83rd captains to lead a team in the world cup

India will be led by MS Dhoni who also keeps wickets in this edition. MS Dhoni would become the seventh wicket keeper captain to lead a team in the world cup. Others are – BM Mauricette of Canada, AJ Stewart of England, LK Germon of New Zealand, A Flower of Zimbabwe, Khaled Mashud of Bangladesh and J Smits of Netherlands.

MS Dhoni who has an aggregate of 5808 runs in one day games as a wicket keeper batsman require 192 more runs for 6000 runs. He would then become the third wicket keeper batsman to total 6000 plus runs in one day games. Others are – AC Gilchrist {9410} and KC Sangakkara {7711} – aggregate runs prior to the start of the world cup.

MS Dhoni wha has scored 23 half centuries as a wicket keeper-cum-captain in one day games require two more half centuries for his 25 half centuries. He would then become the first wicket keeper-cum-captain in the history of one day games to score 25 half centuries

MS Dhoni who has played 93 one day games as wicket keeper captain require seven more games for his 100 appearances. He would then become the first wicket keeper batsman to play 100 games in the history of one day games

RT Ponting and Imran Khan are on par having led Australia and Paki
stan on 22 occasions. Three more games for RT Ponting would give RT Ponting the distinction of leading Australia in 25 games. He would then become the second captain in the history of world cup to lead a team on 25 plus occasions. SP Fleming is the other captain who has led New Zealand on 27 occasions. RT Ponting on his way to 25 captaincy assignments will go past M Azharuddin of India who has 23 captaincy assignments. Six more captaincy assignments for RT Ponting would make him the captain with most assignments – 28 {Note – Australia plays six games in the league stages of the tournament}

It is interesting to note that the following captains who have led their respective teams in 15 or more games are yet to register a duck – RT Ponting of Australia {22 games as captain} : CH Lloyd of West Indies {17 games as captain} and N Kapil Dev of India {15 games as captain}

RT Ponting of Australia who has scored five half centuries as captain require two more half century for his seventh half century. If he gets it, he would become the captain in the world cup with most half centuries and he would wrest the record from M Azharuddin of India who has scored six half centuries.

If he gets them, he would become 22nd bowler in the annals of one day games to capture 250 plus wickets. He would become the sixth Indian bowler to capture 250 plus wickets in one day games. Others are – A Kumble {337}: J Srinath {315}: AB Agarkar {288}: N Kapil Dev {253} and Zaheer Khan {182}

Harbhajan Singh {242} and Zaheer Khan {239} have captured 242 and 239 wickets in one day games representing India. They require eight and eleven wickets for their 250 wickets. If they get them, they would become the fifth and sixth bowlers to capture 250 plus wickets representing India. Others are – A Kumble {334}: J Srinath {315}: AB Agarkar {288} and N Kapil Dev {253}

Harbhajan Singh had captured 96 wickets on home soil and requires four more wickets for 100 wickets. If he gets them, he would become sixth spin bowler in the annals of one day games to capture 100 plus wickets on home soil. Others are – M Muralitharan of Sri Lanka {141}: SK Warne of Australia {134}: A Kumble of India {126}: ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka {119} and DL Vettori of New Zealand {111}

SR Tendulkar has an aggregate of 2965 runs against Sri Lanka. He needs 35 more runs for 3000 runs. If he gets them, he would become the only batsman in the annals of one day game to total 3000 plus runs against two specific teams. He has an aggregate of 3005 runs against Australia. As of now he remains the only batsman in the annals of one day games to total 3000 plus runs against a specific opposition

SR Tendulkar’s 3000 against Sri Lanka would earn him the distinction of becoming the first batsman to total 3000 plus runs against Sri Lanka

SR Tendulkar’s feat of 3000 plus runs against two teams – Australia and Sri Lanka – would constitute a world record as he would be the first batsman in the annals of one day games to earn such a distinction

SR Tendulkar has scored nine hundreds against Australia and requires one more hundred for his 10th hundred. If he gets it, he would become the first batsman in the annals of one day gamest to score ten hundreds against a specific opposition which is a world record.

SR Tendulkar has scored eight hundreds against Sri Lanka and requires one more hundred for his ninth hundred. If he gets it, he would become the first batsman in the annals of one day games to score nine hundreds against two specific oppositions which is a world record

RT Ponting of Australia and V Sehwag of India have scored six hundreds against New Zealand and require one more hundred for their seventh hundred. If they get it, their would provide the fifth and sixth occasion of a batsman scoring seven hundreds against a specific opposition. The other four occasions are – SR Tendulkar of India {nine hundreds vs Australia} : SR Tendulkar of India {eight hundred vs Sri Lanka} : ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka {seven hundreds vs India} and Saeed Anwar of Pakistan {seven hundreds vs Sri Lanka}

V Sehwag’s seven hundreds against New Zealand would provide the third occasion of an Indian batsman scoring seven or more hundreds against a specific opposition.

RT Ponting and V Sehwag would become the first batsman to score seven hundreds against New Zealand depending upon who gets their seventh hundred first.

SR Tendulkar has scored 17 half centuries against Sri Lanka and requires one more half century for his 18th half centuries. If het gets them, he would then become the fourth batsmen in the annals of one day games, to score 18 half centuries against a specific opposition. Others are – IVA Richards of West Indies {20 vs Australia} : DL Haynes of West Indies {18 vs Pakistan} and ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka {18 vs Paksitan}

SR Tendulkar would become the first Indian batsman to score 18 half centuries against a specific opposition

GC Smith has scored 37 one day half centuries and requires two more half centuries for his 39th half century. If he gets them, he would then occupy the second place among captains who have scored most fifties. The first positon is held by RT Ponting with 51 half centuries. If he gets his 39th fifty, he would surpass three captains who have scored 37 or more half centuries – SP Fleming {38}: M Azharuddin {37} and A Ranatunga {37}

RT Ponting of Australia has an aggregate of nine sixes in the World Cup against India. SB Styris of New Zealand has a total of nine sixes in the World Cup against Sri Lanka. Both these batsmen require one more six for their tenth six against the said opposition. They would become the third or fourth batsmen to score ten or more sixes against a specific opposition in the World Cup depending who scores their tenth six first. Others are – AC Gilchrist of Australia {11 sixes vs Sri Lanka} and N Kapil Dev of India
{10 sixes vs Zimbabwe}

Shahid Afridi of Pakistan has scored 47 one day sixes against India. He needs three more sixes for his 50 sixes. If he gets them he would become the only batsman in the annals of one day game to score 50 plus sixes against two oppositions which is a world record. He has already scored 54 sixes against Sri Lanka.

Shahid Afridi’s feat of 50 plus sixes against India would provide the third occasion of a batsman achieving such a feat in the annals of one day games. The other two occasions are – Shahid Afridi {54 sixes vs Sri Lanka} and ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka {53 sixes vs Pakistan}. Shahid Afridi holds the record for most sixes against a specific opposition – 54 vs Sri Lanka.

RT Ponting has an aggregate of 987 one day runs against India on Indian soil. He requires 13 more runs for his 1000 runs. If he gets them he would then become the first overseas batsman to score 1000 runs against on Indian soil.

RT Ponting and CL Hooper have played 24 games against on Indian soil, while ST Jayasuriya has played 25 games. Two more games for RT Ponting would give him 26th appeafance which would make him the most capped player against India on Indian soil.

They require one innings and two innings respectively to equal ST Jayasuriya’s record. At the end of the world cup either RT Ponting or SR Tendulkar would hold the record for most innings played in the world Cup depending upon which cricketer plays most innings in the ensuing world Cup

JH Kallis who has an aggregate of 923 world cup runs require 77 runs for his 1000 runs. He would then become the 13th batsman in the world Cup who have totalled 1000 plus runs. Other twelve batsmen are- SR Tendulkar, RT Ponting, BC Lara, ST Jayasuriya, AC Gilchrist, Javed Miandad, SP Fleming, HH Gibbs, PA de Silva, IVA Richards, SC Ganguly and ME Waugh. JH Kallis would become the second South Africa batsman to total 1000 plus world cup runs after HH Gibbs

SC Chanderpaul who has an aggregate of 854 runs in the world Cup required 146 more runs for his 1000 world cup runs. He would then become the 14th batsman to total 1000 plus world Cup runs.

DPMD Jayawardene has played 24 world cup games prior to the start of the ensuing world cup. He requires one more game to play 25 games. He would then become the 37th cricketer to appear in 25 plus world cup games.

JH Kallis who has an aggregate of 11002 one day runs requires 362 more runs to overhaul SC Ganguly’s 11363 runs to occupy the fifth place amongst the most run getters in one day games.

RT Ponting who has an aggregate of 13082 one day runs requires 347 more runs to overhaul ST Jayasuriya’s 13428 runs to occupy the second place amongst the most run getters in one day games.

RT Ponting who has scored 29 one day hundreds requires one more hundred for his 30th hundred to become the second batsman to score 30 or more hundreds in one day games after SR Tendulkar who has 46 hundreds to his credit prior to the start of this world cup.

As the inaugural game of this edition would be between Bangladesh and India at Dhaka on 19.02.11, both the teams will be led by new captains. Bangladesh would be led by Shakib Al Hasan while India will be led by MS Dhoni. They would become the 82nd and 83rd captains to lead a team in the world cup

Brian Lara has been dismissed run out on 19 occasions in ODIs and on three occasions in World Cup.

Plunkett is the second England bowler to concede 70 plus runs against West Indies in the World Cup.

Only two bowlers have conceded 70 plus runs in seven overs in the World Cup. MO Jones {7.0-0-74-1 for Ber vs Ind at Trinidad on 19.03.07 – Economy rate – 10.57 } and LE Plunkett {7.0-0-71-1 for Eng vs Win at Bridgetown on 21.04.07 – Economy rate – 10.14} are the two bowlers.

MP Vaughan became the third England captain to register fifty against West Indies in World Cup. MP Vaughan’s run out on 79 provide the ninth instance of a captain run out after registering fifty in the World Cup. He is the second England captain to be run out with a fifty {79} after AJ Stewert {who had made 77 vs RSA at Melbourne on 12.03.92.

AJ Stewert and MP Vaughan also figure as the two England openers in the list of opening batsmen who were run out after registering fifties in the World Cup.

BC Lara and MP Vaughan’s run out dismissals in this game provide the second instance of rival captains run out in a World Cup game. The first instance was at Durban on 03.03.03 when ST Jayasuriya and SM Pollock were run out in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

For the first time in the World Cup history rival opening batsmen registered identical score. In this game Chris Gayle for England and MP Vaughan registered 79 respectively.

West Indies losing this game after posting 300 runs provide is the third instance of a team losing the game after posting 300 plus runs in the World Cup. Tharanga’s 73 the 65th fifties excluding hundreds by Sri Lankan batsmen in World Cup which makes Sri Lanka to take the fourth spot in the list of countries which have made 65 plus fifties excluding hundreds in the World Cup. Australia {81}, England {70} and New Zealand {67} are the countries ahead of Sri Lanka.

Jayawardene’s 115 not out in this game provides the 18th hundred by a captain in the World Cup. Jayawardene becomes the second Sri Lankan captain to register a hundred in the World Cup after Sanath Jayasuriya’s 120 against New Zealand at Bloemfontein on 10.02.03. It is interesting to note that against New Zealand there are only two hundreds registered in the World Cup and these two hundreds are by Sri Lankan batsmen – Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene.

Jayawardene’s 115 not out represent the highest individual score in the semi finals of the World Cup. It is also the second hundred by a captain in the semi finals of the World Cup after Saurav Ganguly’s 111 not out against Kenya at Durban in 2003. It also represents the second hundred against New Zealand in the semi finals of the World Cup

Sri Lanka’s 289 for 5 is the second highest score posted by a team in semi finals of the World Cup, The highest score is 293 for 6 in 60.0 overs by West Indies against Pakistan in 1979.

Muralitharan claimed his 50th World Cup wicket when he claimed the wicket of Jacob Oram caught and bowled for 3 in this game. He is the third bowler after Glen McGrath and Wasim Akram to capture 50 World Cup Wickets. At the end of the game Murali has an aggregate of 53 World Cup Wickets

Jacob Oram’s wicket gave Muralitharan another record – his 65th wicket against New Zealand in One day Internationals. This wicket made him the second highest wicket taker against New Zealand in ODIs after Waqar Younis who has 79 wickets to his credit. Murali left behind Wasim Akram who had 64 wickets in the process. At the end of the match Murali’s aggregate against New Zealand stood at 68 wickets.

Muralitharan with 23 wickets in this edition equalled the World Cup record aggregate for a single edition held by Chaminda Vaas who also had 23 wickets in 2003 edition. Murali’s 23 wickets is the highest aggregate in this edition. Glen McGrath has 22 wickets to his credit.

Muralitharan {46}, Chaminda Vaas {26} and Sanath Jayasuriya {26} together have an aggregate of 98 wickets in Sri Lanka’s winning games against New Zealand in ODIs.

Muralitharan’s 4 for 31 in this game provide the 10th instance of a bowler taking four or more wickets in Semi finals of the World Cup. Muralitharan is the lone Sri Lankan bowler in this list. South Africa losing half its side for 27 runs in this game provides the third instance of a side losing five wickets under 35 runs in a semi final of the World Cup. The first two instances occurred in the first ever semi final of the World Cup in 1975. England batting first lost its five wickets for 35 runs against Australia at Leeds on 18.06.75 and then it was the turn of Australia in the same game when they lost their five wickets for 32 runs.

McGrath took his 23rd wicket in this World Cup when he had JH Kallis bowled for 5 and equalled the record of Muthaih Muralitharan’s aggregate of 23 wickets in this edition. He went past Murali’s record of 23 wickets with the wicket of AG Prince caught by Gilchrist for zero – his 24th wicket to become the highest wicket taker in any edition of the World Cup. In the process McGrath left behind Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas who had taken 23 wickets in 2007 and 2003 respectively.

McGrath earned the distinction of becoming the first bowler to capture 25 wickets in any edition of the World Cup when he had MV Boucher caught by Hayden for Zero.

McGrath’s 25 in this World Cup provide the second instance of his taking 25 plus wickets in a series in One Day Internationals. The other occasion of his 25 plus wickets in a series is his 27 wickets – an all time record for any bowler – in Carlton and United Series in 1998-99. Denis Lillee is the other bowler to have an aggregate of 25 wickets in a series – 25 wickets in Benson and Hedges World Cup series in 1980-81.

Twenty plus wickets in a World Cup series has been accomplished by bowlers on nine occasions – two bowlers in 1999 : three bowlers in 2003 and four bowlers in 2007. 2007 series has witnessed the most number of bowlers aggregating 20 plus wickets

Of the four bowlers who have aggregated 20 plus wickets in 2007, three are Australians – McGrath {25}, SW Tait {22} and GB Hogg {20} – a record for most bowlers from a single team in any edition aggregating 20 plus wickets.

Adam Gilchrist’s four catches in this game provides the third instance of his effecting four or more dismissals in the World Cup – a record for most instances in the World Cup. SW Tait’s 4 for 39 is his first four wicket haul in ODIs and his four wickets provide the 17th instance of an Aussie bowler capturing four or more wickets against South Africa in ODIs.

South Africa’s 149 all out batting first in this game provides the sixth instance of a team all out batting first for less than 150 in this edition.

Hayden completed 600 runs (when he took his score from 18 to 22 -602 to be exact} in this edition. He became the second batsman after SR Tendulkar to register 600 plus runs in a World Cup. Tendulkar aggregated 673 runs in 2003 edition. At the end of the game, Hayden’s aggregate stood at 621

Ponting completed 500 runs in this edition and his aggregate at the end of the game stood at 502. He is the third batsman after Hayden {621} and Jayawardene {529} to reach the mile stone.

Ponting’s 502 in this edition provides the fifth instance of a batsman aggregating 500 plus runs in a World Cup. He if the fourth batsmen to achieve the distinction. Others are SR Tendulkar {twice}, ML Hayden, M Jayawardene.

2007 edition has witnessed three batsmen – Hayden, Jayawardene and Ponting aggregating 500 plus runs – a record by most batsmen aggregating 500 plus runs in a single edition of the World Cup.

Among the above list Mahela Jayawardene and Ricky Ponting are the captains who have aggregated 500 plus runs and both have achieved the milestone in this edition. Right through the earlier eight World Cup editions, there are no instances of any captain registering 500 plus runs.

Gilchrist becomes the fourth wicket keeper batsman to register a hundred in the World Cup when he made 149. South Africa’s inviting the opposition to bat after winning the toss provides the 27th such instance in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. South Africa has done it on most occasions – four – including the current match.

When Boucher caught Tamim Iqbal for 38 off A Nel, it was the 50th catch by South African Wicket keeper in the World Cup. Other teams who have pouched fifty plus catches are Australia {89}, West Indies {84}, Pakistan {67}, India {60} and England {55}.

Javed Omar and Tamim Iqbal were concerned in a record stand of 42 runs for the first wicket against South Africa. Bangladesh and South Africa have met eight teams in ODIs.

Bangladesh posted its best total in ODIs while batting first when they made 251 for 8 wickets obliterating the previous best of 154 for 9 at Benoni in 2002-03. This total is also Bangladesh’s best in the World Cup. The previous best was 223 for 9 against Pakistan at Northampton in 1999. Mohammad Ashraful’s knock of 87 is Bangladesh’s best in World Cup obliterating Minhajul Abedin’s 68 not out against Scotland at Edinburgh in 1999. It is his second World cup. It is also eighth fifty by a Bangla batsman in World Cup.

Ashraful’s 87 is his eleventh fifty in ODIs. It is his second best innings after his 94 against against England at Nottingham in 2005

Andrew Nel who came in place of Andrew Hall captured five wickets conceding 45 runs, providing the second instance of a five wicket haul in World Cup after Langveldt’s 5 for 39 against Sri Lanka at Providence on 28.03.07 Nel’s five wicket haul is his career best figures. He has taken four wickets on two occasions earler.

His five wickets haul is the 25th occasion of a South African bowler capturing five plus wickets in One dayers. Nel’s 5 for 45 provide the 37th instance of a bowler capturing five plus wickets in World Cup.

Andrew Nel’s five for 45 went in vain providing the seventh instance of a five plus by a bowler going in vain in the World Cup. The other six are GJ Gilmour of Australia, N Kapildev of India, ALF deMel of Sri Lanka, Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan, van Vurren of Namibia and SE Bond of New Zealand.

With this win Bangladesh has won 36 games out of 155 ODIs it has played. 117 matches were lost and two games ended in no result. In the World Cup, Bangladesh has been victorious in just five games out of the 17 games it has played. The five games are against Scotland – by 22 runs – at Edinburg in 1999, vs Pakistan – by RSA at Northampton in 1999, vs Ind – by 5 wkts – Trinidad in 2007, Vs Bermuda – won by 07 wkts – Trinidad in 2007 and vs South Africa – by 67 runs at Providence in 2007

HH Gibbs registered his eighth fifty including hundreds in the World Cup. He is the 13th batsman to register fifty including hundreds in the World Cup.

Australia vs England

Bell and Pietersen added 140 runs for the third wicket in this game was three short of England’s best for the third wicket in World Cup. 143 run stand for the third wicket between GA Hick and G Thorpe against Holland at Peshawar in 1996 was England’s best stand for the third wicket in World Cup. The stand was England’s eighth three figure stand for the third wicket.

Bell’s 77 and Pieterson’s 104 provide the 20th instance of England batsman registering a fifty in World Cup. Only Australia {29} and West Indies {21} are ahead of England.

Pieterson’s 104 was his fourth fifty plus score in the current edition and emulates GC Smith of South Africa has registered four fifties.

Gilchrist becomes the fourth wicket keeper to have effected five stumping dismissals in the World Cup. A Flintoff was his fifth stumping victim. The other wicket keepers to have effected five or more dismissals in the World Cup are Moin Khan {7}, Kiran More {6} and KC Sangakkara {6}.

Pietersen’ 104 represents the 97th hundred in World Cup. It is the seventh hundred by an England batsman in the World Cup. The other five are DL Amiss {1975}, KWR Fletcher {1975}, AJ Lamb {1983}, DI Gower {1983}, GA Gooch {1987} and GA Hick {1996}.

It is the eighth hundred in the World Cup against Australia. The other seven batsmen are CH Lloyd {Win}. MD Crowe {NZl}, CZ Harris {NZl}, PA de Silva {Srl}, A Jadeja {Ind}, NC Johnson {Zim}, HH Gibbs {RSA}. Pieterson with his 104 earns the distinction of becoming the first England batsman to register a hundred against Australia in the World Cup.

Pieterson became the fifth batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the current edition. The other four are ML Hayden {395}, JH Kallis {360}, GC Smith {344}, K Peiterson {331} and ST Jayasuriya {303} as at the end of the England’s innings.

With three wickets in this innings, McGrath equalled the record for most wickets in the current edition held by Lasit Malinga of Sri Lanka who has to his credit 15 wickets.

Hayden became the first batsman to aggregate 400 runs in this edition when he was on five during his innings in this game. When Hayden hit Anderson to a boundary four, his second boundary of the innings, he took his boundary four aggregate to 43 in this edition and obliterated GA Smith’s 42 boundary fours which was a record for this edition in the matches played so far. At the end of his innings, he had scored 47 boundary fours {six fours in this innings}

RT Ponting obliterates the Australian record for most captaincy assignments in the World Cup held by Allan Border – 16. The match against England was Ponting’s 17th as captain in the World Cup. Ponting is now tied up with CH Lloyd who has led West Indies on 17 occasions. Only Azharuddin {23}, SP Fleming {22} and Imran Khan {22} are ahead of RT Ponting, leaving out CH Lloyd who has retired from the game.

AC Gilchrist with five fours in this game took his boundary fours aggregate in the World Cup to 120 and moves to the third position in the list of batsmen with most boundary fours. Only Sachin Tendulkar [189} and SP Fleming {126} are ahead of AC Gilchrist

With 86 runs in this game, RT Ponting extended his fifty plus scores to six in the World Cup as captain. West Indies act of inserting the opposition is the 19th instance in the World Cup and the fourth in the current edition. Of the 18 instances, they have won ten games and lost eight games. Of the three in the current edition, they have won one game and lost two games {create the link}

AB de Villers and JH Kallis were concerned in a three figure partnership which realized 170 runs for the second wicket in this game. This stand is the third stand of 150 plus runs against West Indies in World Cup. AB de Villers became the seventh batsman to register a hundred against West Indies in the World Cup. South Africa’s 356 for 4 in this game provides the tenth instance of a side posting 350 plus runs in the World Cup. South Africa is the only team to post 350 plus runs on two occasions in the World Cup and that too in a single edition of the World Cup. On 16.03.2007, South Africa had posted 353 for 3 in 40.0 overs against Netherlands at Basseterre.

South Africa’s 356 for 4 is its highest World Cup score obliterating its previous best of 353 for 3 in 40.0 overs against Netherlands at Basseterre on 16.03.07.

For the first time in the World Cup a team has posted 350 plus against West Indies and that credit goes to South Africa when it posted 356 for 4.

Four batsmen AB de Villers {146}, JH Kallis {81}, HH Gibbs {61 not out} and MV Boucher {52} registered fifties in this game providing the seventh instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in the World Cup. Of these six instances, South African batsman have achieved the feat twice. Apart from this occasion, the other occasion when four of their batsmen registered fifties was against Netherlands at St Kitts on 16.03.07 – GC Smith {66}, JH Kallis {128 not out}, HH Gibbs {72} and MV Boucher {75} were the batsmen who registered fifties in this game.

AB de Villers’s 146 and RR Sarwan’s 92 provide the eighth instance of rival batsmen registering hundred and ninety in World Cup game.

IR Bradshaw and DB Powell added 41 runs for the ninth wicket which equalled the existing West Indian World Cup record for ninth wicket of 41 runs between WW Davis and MA Holding vs Australia at Leeds on 11.06.83.

DB Powell’s 48 not out is the highest score at No.10 position in the World Cup. It obliterated SA Dukanwala’s 40 not out for UAE vs South Africa on 16.02.96 and Sneden’s 40 for New Zealand vs Sri Lanka at Derby on 18.06.83

Bangladesh and England

Habibibul Bashar’s run out in this game provides the 35th instance of a captain’s run out in World Cup. It was the third time that Habibul Bashar was run out in a World Cup game and he is the third captain to be dismissed run out on three occasions. The other two are Imran Khan of Pakistan and SP Fleming of New Zealand.

Habibul Bashar becomes the only captain to be dismissed run out on three occasions in a single edition of the World Cup. He was dismissed run out in three games of the ongoing edition 2007. 2007 edition has witnessed nine instances of captain’s run out – a record – obliterating eight instances of 1992.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka

Stephen Fleming rewrote the World Cup record for most captaincy assignments. This game was his 24th as captain. Previous record was held by Mohd Azharuddin who lead India on 23 occasions.

When Chaminda Vaas had Stephen Fleming leg before the wicket- his 45th World Cup wicket – he overtook Javagal Srinath’s World Cup aggregate of 44 wickets. He became the third bowler in the history of World Cup to take 45 plus wickets, after G McGrath and Wasim Akram. At the end of the game, Vaas aggregate stood at 47.

Stephen Fleming failed to open the account in this game. This is the second instance of his failing to open the account when
he was leading in the World Cup – the first zero was at Southampton against West Indies in 1999. He becomes the seventh captain to register zero on two occasions in the World Cup. The other six are Azharuddin {India}, JM Brearley {Eng}, WJ Cronje {RSA|, Harilal Shah {EAF}, IH Romaine {Ber} and RGD Willis {Eng}

Stephen Fleming failed to open his account on 17 occasions in his ODI career – six occasions vs Srl : thrice each against RSA, Aus and Win ; once each against Pak and Zim. He has been dismissed without scoring with a lbw on seven occasions.

Stephen Fleming’s zero in this game was his 14th while leading New Zealand. The other captain who has been dismissed for zero on 14 occasions is Arjuna Ranatunga of Sri Lanka. They now hold the record jointly for the most zeros as captain.

Fleming has been dismissed for zero in his last four consecutive innings against Sri Lanka – quite interestingly he was dismissed leg before wicket to Chaminda Vaas in these innings.

Scott Styris’s 111 not out in this game provides the 99th hundred in World Cup. It was 11th hundred by a New Zealand batsman in World Cup.

Styris is the fourth New Zealand batsman to register two hundreds in World Cup. The other three are NJ Astle, SP Fleming and GM Turner. Styris’s had registered 141 against Sri Lanka at Bloemfontien in 2003.

Styris remains the only New Zealand batsman to register two hundreds against Sri Lanka in World Cup.

Styris’s 111 not out is the second Nelson in the World Cup which ended up on a losing cause. The other Nelson was Aamir Sohail’s 111 against South Africa at Karachi in 1996

Styris is the fourth batsman to register two hundreds against the same opposition. The other three are SC Ganguly {vs Ken}, SR Tendulkar {Vs Ken| and BC Lara {vs RSA}.

Sanath Jayasuriya with his 64 in this game registered his eighth World Cup fifty including hundreds {3 hundreds plus five fifties}. He became the second Sri Lankan batsman to register eight World Cup fifties including hundreds after PA de Silva { 2 hundreds plus six fifties}

Jayasuriya is the second Sri Lankan batsman to register 100 boundary fours in the World Cup and with five boundary fours in this game has now 106 boundary hits at the end of this game and needs one more boundary to equal the Sri Lankan record of 107 boundary fours held by PA de Silva. Muralitharan with three wickets in this game took his World Cup aggregate to 45. He is now fourth in the list of most wickets in the World Cup. Only G McGrath {60}, Wasim Akram {55} and C Vaas {47| are ahead of Muralitharan.

Vettori captured his 200th ODI wicket when he had Jayawardene caught by HMH Marshall for 15. Vettori became the 28th bowler in ODIs to capture 200 plus wickets. With the wicket of Chamara Silva {caught by Bond} he equalled the aggregate of 201 wickets by Chris Cairns. Only Chris Harris with 203 wickets is ahead of Vettori. Vettori is the third New Zealand bowler to aggregate 200 ODI wickets.

Kumar Sangakkar’s 69 not out in this game provide the 52nd instance of a wicket keeper fifty including hundreds in World Cup. It is the sixth fifty by a Sri Lankan Wicket keeper in World Cup. It is the third fifty by Sangakkara – a record for most fifties by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper in World Cup. RG de Alwis had registered two fifties in World Cup.

Sangakkara’s 69 not out provides the seventh instance of a fifty plus hundreds against New Zealand in World Cup. The other batsman to score fifty plus runs against New Zealand are DL Houghton {twice}, RD Jacobs {twice}, Taibu and Dravid. Sangakkara is the first Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman to register a fifty against New Zealand in the World Cup.

Australia vs Ireland

Australia’s act of inserting the opposition in this game provides the 15th instance of Australia doing so in World Cup. Of the 15 instances, they have won nine games and lost six games.

Ireland’s 91 all out provide the 13th instance of a team all out for a total less than 100. Ireland is the third team to be dismissed for a total less than 100 in this edition. Bermuda {78 against Srilanka} and Zimbabwe {99 against Pakistan} are the other two teams.

When Sanath Jayasuriya hit Bracken for a four of the last ball of his first over, he took his boundary fours aggregate in the World Cup to 108 and wrested the Sri Lankan record for most World Cup boundary fours held by PA de Silva who had an aggregate of 107 boundary fours. Kumara Sangakkara’s zero in this game provides the 43rd instance of a Wicket keeper failing to open the account in World Cup. His dismissal for zero provides the fourth instance and third Sri Lankan wicket keeper failing to open the account in World Cup. The other two wicket keepers are DSB Kuruppu and RS Kaluwitharana {twice}

Sangakkara has failed to open his account on seven occasions in ODIs including the one in this game. It is for the first time that he failed to open his account in the World Cup. It is also his first zero against Australia.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 72 is now the best by a Sri Lankan captain against Australia in World Cup. Previous best was 62 by PA de Silva at Adelaide on 07.03.92. Mahela Jayawadene and PA de Silva are the only two Sri Lankan captains to register fifties against Australia in World Cup.

Mahela Jaywardene and Chamara Silva posted 140 runs for the fourth wicket which is an ODI record for fourth wicket against Australia. The previous best was 121 between Mahela Jayawardne and KC Sangakkara at Dambulla on 20.02.04 and 121 between Russel Arnold and Mahela Jayawardene at Perth on 29.01.05.

140 runs partnership between Jayawadene and Chamara Silva for the fourth wicket in this game is the fourth highest partnership for the fourth wicket by Sri Lankan batsmen in its ODIs

Mahela Jayawardene’s 72 represents the highest score by a captain who has been dismissed stumped in the World Cup. The previous best was by GA Gooch of England who had made 65 before he was stumped against West Indies at Melbourne on 27.02.92. Jayawardene is the fourth captain who was dismissed stumped after scoring a fifty in World Cup. The other two are GA Smith {59} and WJ Cronje {57}

Adam Gilchrist now has six stumping dismissals to his credit in World Cup. The other two wicket keepers to have six stumping dismissals are Kiran More of India and Kumara Sangakkara of Sri Lanka. The record for most stumping dismissals is held by Moin Khan of Pakistan with seven stumping dismissals.

Sri Lanka’s 226 all out provide the 14th instance of a team batting first and all out in the 2007 edition. Sri Lanka have been all out on most occasions – three. On all the three occasions they have been all out in the 50th over.

Nathan Bracken’s 4 for 19 provides the 15th instance of a bowler capturing four wickets conceding 19 runs in ODIs. Bracken is the fifth Aussie bowler to return with figures of 4 for 19. The other four are MHN Walker, SP O’Donnel, SK Warne and SCG MacGill.

Nathan Bracken becomes the second bowler to return with figures of 4 for 19 in the World Cup. The other bowler is Manoj Prabhakar of India who had taken 4 for 19 against Zimbabwe at Mumbai on 17.10.87.

Of the ten Australian bowlers who have captured exact four wickets in World Cup, Nathen Bracken’s figures of 4 for 19 is the most economical bowling figures. It is an improvement over Brad Hogg’s 4 for 27 against Netherlands at Basseterre on 18.03.07.

AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden were concerned in 76 run stand for the first wicket. This is the 25th occasion that this pair has put on fifty plus partnership in ODIs. They equalled the DC Boon and G R Marsh’s record of 25 partnerships of fifty plus runs. AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden went past the record of 24 partnerships of fifty plus runs of DL Haynes and CG Greenidge.

AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden now have 40 partnerships of 50 plus runs partnerships including the century partnerships {25 F plus 15 C}. They rewrote the previous record of 39 fifty plus runs stand held by DL Haynes and CG Greenidge {15 C plus 24 F}.

Jayawadene’s 72 was his fourth fifty as captain in this edition and he emulated GA Smith and SP Fleming who have registered four fifties while leading their sides. RT Ponting joined this company later during Aussie innings when he scored his fourth fifty 66 not out.

RT Ponting now holds the record for most fifties as captain in the World Cup. With his fifty in this game he has seven fifty plus scores. Others to have six fifties are Azharuddin and Stephen Fleming.

SR Tendulakr was dismissed for zero for the second time in the World Cup. The first occasion was against Australia at The Oval in 1999. It was his 18th occasion of scoring zero in one day games

Mathew Hayden hit the fastest hundred off the World Cup in 66 balls. He wrested the record from JM Davison who had hit the hundred in 67 balls against West Indies on 23.02.03

RT Ponting reached the milestone of 10000 runs in One day Internationals to become the seventh batsman to aggregate 10000 runs in ODIs. The other six are Tendulkar, Inzamam-ul-Huq, Ganguly, Jayasuriya, Dravid and Lara. It is quite interesting to note that these seven have participated in the current edition of the World Cup 2007

Australia has scored 300 plus runs on seven occasions when they batted first after losing the toss.

SM Pollock became the sixth bowler in the World Cup to go wicketless after conceding 80 plus runs with his figures of 10.0-0-83-0. RT Ponting with his 91 in this game becomes the fifth captain to register ninety in World Cup. The other four are RB Richardson, M Azharuddin, MD Crowe and GC Smith.

SM Pollock’s 10.0-0-83-0 and CK Langveldt’s 10.0-0-82-1 provides the second instance of two bowlers conceding 80 plus runs in World Cup. The other instance was witnessed in India vs Sri Lanka game when two Sri Lankan bowelrs – Chaminda Vaas (10.0-0-84-1} and KEA Upashantha {10.0-0-80-0} conceded 80 plus runs.

Australian innings witnessed two three figure stands – 106 runs between AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden for the first wicket and 161 runs between RT Ponting and MJ Clarke for the third wicket. This provides the tenth instance of two or more three figure stands in an innings in World Cup. It also provides the fourth instance of Aussie batsmen achieving the feat.

Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua became the 165th ground to host an one day game. It is the 13th ground in West Indies to host an ODI.

Antigua became the fourth island to host an ODI on two grounds in West Indies. The other islands which have hosted ODIs on two grounds are – Grenada, Guyana, St Lucia

RT Ponting becomes the 31st captain to be dismissed run out in World Cup. He is the third Australian batsman to be dismissed run out in World Cup after Ian Chappell and Allan Border {twice}. He is the second Aussie captain to be dismissed run out against West Indies in World Cup after Ian Chappell.

Australia extended its run of 300 plus runs to four in as many games in the current edition – a feat unparalleled in the history of World Cup.

McGrath with his bowling figures of 8.0-1-31-3 which included a maiden over now holds the records of most maiden overs bowled in the World Cup -39. He wrested the record from Richard Hadlee who had bowled 38 maiden overs in the World Cup. His three wickets in this game takes his aggregate of wickets to 54, just one short of the most wickets in the World Cup – 55 wickets by Wasim Akram of Pakistan.

Ponting now has taken 20 catches in the World cup – most by a fieldsman excluding wicket keepers. He becomes the first fieldsman to pouch twenty catches in the World Cup.

Australia has now won 44 World Cup games out of 62 games that it has played.

West Indies suffered its first World cup loss by 100 plus runs when it went down by 109 runs to Australia in this game. As far as Australia is concerned it was their seven World cup win by a margin of 100 plus runs.

Brian Lara’s 77 is his seventh World Cup fifty excluding hundreds. It is first fifty while leading West Indies in World Cup.

Ramadin’s fifty in this game provide the 48th instance of a Wicketkeeper registering fifty including hundreds in World Cup. His fifty provides the 5th instance of West Indian Wicketkeeper registering fifty in World Cup. He is the third Wicket keeper from West Indies to register a World Cup Fifty. Sri Lanka and South Africa

TM Dilshan and R Arnold were concerned in a three figure stand for the sixth wicket of 97 runs which bettered the previous World Cup record of 84 runs between Arjuna Ranatunga and RS Kaluwitharana against England at Lord’s in 1999.

South Africa won this game by one wicket providing the third instance of one wicket win in the World Cup.

CK Lagveldt became the first bowler to capture five wickets in the current edition when he returned with figures of 10.0-1-39-5. Malinga’s four for 54 in this game could not clinch a win for Sri Lanka providing the 19th instance of a bowler’s four plus wickets going in vain in World Cup. Malinga is the fourth Sri Lankan bowler to witness his four plus wicket World Cup haul going in vain, after ALF de Mel, Muralitharan and Hathurasingha.

Langveldt’s five wicket haul coupled with Malinga’s four wicket haul in this game provides the tenth instance of rival bowlers capturing four plus wickets in the World Cup.

Malinga is the first bowler to take four wickets in four deliveries in the history of One day Internationals. He took two wickets off his last two deliveries of eighth over and took two more of his next over {ninth over}.

Malinga is the fifth bowler to perform the Hattrick in the World Cup. The other four are Chetan Sharma of India, Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka, Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan and Bret Lee of Australia.

This match witnessed a rare instance of three bowlers who had performed the Hattrick in One dayers – Langveldt, Vaas and Malinga playing in the same match.

New Zealand and West Indies

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field providing the 22nd instance of New Zealand inserting the opposition in World Cup. Of the previous 21 occasions, 12 games were won and nine games have been lost. New Zealand holds the record for inserting the oppositions on most occasions in the World Cup – 22. England vs Ireland

P Collingwood’s 90 provides the 35th ninety plus scores in World Cup. He was dismissed run out on 90 providing the ninth instance of a batsman run out in nineties in the World Cup. The others are AC Gilchrist {Aus}, MD Crowe {NZl – on two occasions}, SC Ganguly {Ind}, JH Kallis {RSA}, M Azharuddin {Ind}, MJ Clarke {Aus}, AB de Villers {RSA}.

Ganguly and JH Kallis were dismissed for 97 and 96 respectively at Hove on 15.05.99, MJ Clarke and AB de Villers were dismissed for 92 each at Basseterre on 24.03.07 providing the two instances of rival batsmen run out in World Cup.

NJ Obrien’s 63 provides the 49th instance of a wicket keeper registering fifties including hundreds in the World Cup. It was the second fifty for O’brien in this edition, the first one being his 72 against Pakistan at Jamaica on 17.03.07.

RT Ponting overtook WJ Cronje {RSA}, N Kapil Dev {Ind} and Wasim Akram {Pak} who have led their teams on 15 occasions in the World Cup.

Australia has won its all World Cup assignments under RT Ponting – 16 games. This win was RT Ponting’s 16th win. The other captain to win 15 games in the World Cup is Clive Lloyd of West Indies. Out of 17 games he had led, he had won 15 games.

This game was the 273rd game for RT Ponting in ODIs. He equalled AR Border’s 273 appearances. RT Ponting and AR Border’s 273 appearances are now joint second to SR Waugh’s 325 ODI appearances – a record for most ODI appearances by an Australian.

This game was Brad Hogg’s 100th ODI and he becomes the 21st Aussie cricketer to appear in 100 plus ODIs.

When Glen McGrath clean bowled Shahriar Nafeez for one, he equalled the World Cup record for most aggregate wickets of 55 held by Wasim Akram of Pakistan. With the wicket of Aftab Ahmed caught by Nathan Bracken for 11, he took his aggregate to 56 – the most by any bowler in the World Cup

Gilchrist’s 59 not out in this game is his 50th fifty excluding hundreds in ODIs. He is the sixteenth batsman to register fifty fifties excluding hundreds in ODIs. He is the first full time wicket keeper to achieve the milestone. It is also his eighth fifty in the World Cup.

Gilchrist now holds the record for most fours by an Australian batsman in the World Cup.He has hit 115 fours. RT Ponting is close behind with 102 fours to his credit. Other batsmen to hit 100 plus fours are SR Tendulkar {189}, BC Lara {119}, SP Fleming {116} and PA de Silva {102}

With this win, Australia became the first nation to win 400 One day games.

Sri Lanka and West Indies

West Indies won the toss and inserted the opposition in this game, providing the 18th instance of West Indies
inserting the Opposition in the World Cup. This is the third occasion West Indies inviting the opposition in the current edition. As far as skipper Lara is concerned, it was the fourth occasion that he is inviting the opposition in the World Cup.

Sri Lanka has posted 300 plus runs after they were inserted in by the opposition. The three occasions are – 398-5 v Ken in 1996 at Kandy, 318-4 v Ban in 2007 at Port of Spain and 303-4 vs Win in 2007 at Guyana

This game was Sanath Jayasuriya’s 384th match and now he is on par with India’s Sachin Tendulkar, thus holding the record for most appearances in ODIs jointly. In his 384th appearance Sachin Tendulkar failed to open his account, while Sanath Jayasuriya scored a hundred – 115.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawadene added 183 runs for the third wicket in this game providing the fifth instance of a century partnership for the third wicket in this edition. This partnership also provides the 21st instance of a three figure partnership in the current edition. It also provides the 13th instance of a three figure partnership by Sri Lanka in World Cup

Sanath Jaysuriya and Mahela Jaywardene’s third wicket partnership which realized 183 runs provide the 37th instance of 150 plus run stand in the World Cup. It also provides the sixth instance of Sri Lankan batsmen posting 150 plus runs for various wickets in World Cup.

This partnership equalled the existing World Cup record by Sri Lankan batsmen for three figure partnership – stand of 183 runs between PA deSilva and AP Gurusinha for the third wicket against Kenya at Kandy on 06.03.96.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s 115 was his 25th hundred in ODIs and he becomes the second batsman to register 25 plus hundreds in ODIs after India’s Sachin Tendulkar who has 41 hundreds to his credit

Jayasuriya’s 115 is the 95th hundred in the World Cup and seventh instance of a hundred by Sri Lankan batsmen in World Cup. It was also his third hundred in the World Cup. Jayasuriya now holds the Sri Lankan record for most hundreds. The other batsmen with two hundreds are PA de Silva and M Atapattu.

Jayasuriya with his 109 against Bangladesh at Trinidad on 21.03.07 and 115 against West Indies at Guyana on 01.04.07 earns the distinction of becoming the twelfth batsman to register two hundreds in the same edition of the World Cup. The other batsmen who have achieved the feat are GM Turner, GR Marsh, DC Boon, Ramiz Raja, SR Tendulkar, PA de Silva, RS Dravid, Saeed Anwar, MS Atapattu, RT Ponting and ML Hayden.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s with his three hundreds now joins the elite list of batsmen to become the eighth batsmen who have scored three or more hundreds in the World Cup. The other batsmen are SR Tendulkar {04}, ME Waugh {04} SC Ganguly {04}, RT Ponting {04}, IVA Richards {03}, Ramiz Raja {03} and Saeed Anwar {03}

Jayasuriya with his 115 becomes the sixth batsman to register a hundred against West Indies in the World Cup. The others are ML Hayden, JM Davison, Rameez Raja, RT Ponting and DC Boon. Jayasuriya’s 115 is the second best against West Indies after ML Hayden’s 158.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 82 in this game provides the 12th instance of a Sri Lankan captain registering fifty plus including hundreds in the World Cup. It also provides the 89th instance of a captain registering fifties excluding hundreds in the World Cup.

Sri Lanka with its total of 303-5 in this game became the second team to register 300 plus runs in a World Cup game against West Indies. The other team is Australia which posted 322-6 at North Sound on 27.03.07.

Sri Lanka’s 303-5 in this game provides the 16th instance of a team registering 300 plus runs against West Indies in One day Internationals. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned it is the third occasions. The other two occasions are – 329 at Sharjah on 16.10.95 and 313-6 at Barbados on 06.06.2003

Chaminda Vaas who was on par with SM Pollock with 375 wickets moved ahead of SM Pollock to become fourth in the list of highest aggregate wicket taker in ODIs. DJ Bravo was Chaminda Vaas’s 376th victim. With wickets in the match Vaas had an aggregate of at the end of the match. Others ahead of Vaas are Wasim Akram [505}, Muralitharan {441} and Waqar Younis {416}.

Brian Lara became the first batsman to be stumped of Chaminda Vaas bowling. Lara has been dismissed stumped on six occasions in ODIs. His dismissal provides the 93rd instance of a batsman stumped in the World Cup.

Dwayne Smith’s run out without scoring provides the 33rd instance of a batsman was run out without scoring. He is the third West Indian batsman after KLT Arthurton and VC Drakes to suffer the ignominy.

Muralitharan with his two wickets in this game took his aggragate of World Cup wickets to 41 to become the fifth bowler and joined the elite club of bowlers who have taken 40 plus wickets in the World Cup. The other four are McGrath {57}, Wasim Akram {55}, J Srinath {44} and Chaminda Vaas {43}

West Indies lost this game by 113 runs – their largest defeat by margin of runs in World Cup. It is their second loss by 100 plus runs margin in World Cup, the other being by 103 runs against Australia at Antigua on 28.03.07. By a coincidence these are the only two games in World Cup in which West Indies conceded 300 plus runs.

Kumar Sangakkara with two stumping dismissals in this game took his stumpings aggregate to six, which puts him on par with Kiran More’s six stumpings. Only Moin Khan with seven stumping dismissal is ahead of Sangakkara.

Bangladesh and New Zealand

New Zealand has extended its act of inserting the opposition to 23 instances. They have won 14 games and lost 9 games
. New Zealand holds the record of inviting the opposition to bat on most occasions in World Cup. The instance of putting Bangaldesh to bat after winning the toss is its third such instance in the current edition.

New Zealand has inserted the opposition on four occasions in 1979 and 1992 World Cup editions and on three occasions in 1987, 1999, 2003 and 2007 editions.

Bangladesh capped Javed Omar for this game. He is the 34th Bangladesh cricketer to play in the World cup and eighth cricketer in the current edition

Fleming’s 102 not out was his eight ODI hundred and second in the World Cup. Both his hundreds have come when he was leading New Zealand. He emulated Glenn Turner in notching two hundreds in World Cup. Other captains to register two or more hundreds in World Cup are SC Ganguly and RT Ponting who have registered three hundreds.

Fleming’s hundred as captain provides the 118th hundred by a captain in ODIs. It is 17th hundred by a captain in World Cup.

When on 100 Fleming completed 1000 runs in the World Cup and at the end of the match he had an aggregate of 1002 runs. He joins SR Tendulkar {1796}, RT Ponting {1260}, BC Lara {1153}, Javed Miandad {1083}, PA de Silva {1064}, IVA Richards {1013}, SC Ganguly {1006} and ME Waugh {1004} who have aggregated 1000 plus runs in World Cup. Fleming is the first New Zealand batsman to reach the milestone of 1000 World Cup runs.

New Zealand’s nine wickets victory in this game provides the 13th instance of a team winning a game by nine wickets margin in the World Cup. It was the second nine wicket win for New Zealand – the first being the win against Sri Lanka on 09.06.79 at Nottingham

England vs Sri Lanka

England’s act of inserting the opposition provides the 26th instance of team inviting the opposition in the current edition. As far as England is concerned this instance is the first occasion in the current edition.

Sanath Jayasuriya became the most capped player in the history of One day Internationals. He was playing his 385th One day game edging past SR Tendulkar’s 384 games.

When Sanath Jayasuriya hit a six of Sajid Mahmood taking his score form 19 to 25, he took his World Cup runs aggregate to 1001 to become the tenth batsman to reach the milestone. The others are SR Tendulkar, RT Ponting, BC Lara, Javed Miandad, PA de Silva, IVA Richards, SC Ganguly, ME Waugh and SP Fleming.

Sanath Jayasuriya is the second Sri Lankan batsman to aggregate 1000 World Cup runs after P Aravind de Silva. With Aravinda de Silva and Jayasuriya completing 1000 runs, Sri Lanka becomes the fourth country to have two batsmen with 1000 runs. The other three are Australia {ME Waugh and RT Ponting}, West Indies {IVA Richards and BC Lara} and India {SR Tendulkar and SC Ganguly},

Sanath Jayasuriya is the fifth batsman to complete 1000 runs in the ongoing edition of World Cup 2007. The others are RT Ponting, BC Lara, SC Ganguly and SP Fleming.

Sanath Jayasuriya has now 101 World Cup boundary fours to become the seventh batsman to register 100 plus boundary fours in the World Cup. The other six are SR Tendulkar {189}, SP Fleming {126}, BC Lara {119}, AC Gilchrist {115}, PA de Silva {107} and RT Ponting {102}

Sanath Jayasuriya’s six of Sajid Mahmood which gave 1000 World Cup runs was his 25th Six in the World Cup. He becomes the third batsman to hit 25 sixes in the World Cup after RT Ponting {28} and SC Ganguly {25}.

Jayawardene’s 56 provides the 107th fifty including hundreds in the World Cup. It is the 12th fifty including hundreds by Sri Lankan captains in the World Cup. It was Jayawardene’s third fifty in the current edition.

The record for most fifties including hundreds by captains in a single edition of the World Cup has come in 1992 edition. In this edition 21 fifty plus scores were registered by captains. The current edition has 17 fifty plus scores by captains which stands second to 1992 edition.

Jayawardne’s 56 in this game is his third fifty in the current edition which equal’s SP Fleming’s three fifties. Only GC Smith of South Africa with four fifties is ahead of SP Fleming and Jayawardene.

Jayawardene’s 56 and Vaughan’s zero provides the tenth instance of rival captains registering fifty and zero in the World Cup. Sri Lankan captains are involved in four of these instances. Jayawardene is the only captain in this list to appear twice with fifties to his credit. Apart from this game, the other instance is Jayawardene’s 84 and IH Romaine’s zero in the match between Sri Lanka and Bermuda at Trinidad on 15.03.07.

With Pieterson’s 58 and Ravi Bopara’s 52, England batsmen have registered 44 World Cup fifties excluding hundreds. Only Australian batsmen {49 fifties} and New Zealand batsmen {45 fifites} are ahead of England batsmen.

K Pieterson became the third victim of Muralitharan – caught and bowled – in the World Cup. The other two are South African batsmen – SM Pollock for 1 at Northampton in 1999 and HH Gibbs for 31 at Providence in 2007.

Chaminda Vaas and Muralitharan took their World Cup wickets to 44 and 42 respectively at the end of this game. Chaminda Vaas is on par with Javagal Srinath who also has 44 World Cup wickets to his credit

Jayawadene and Pieterson registered their third fifty in the current edition. Other batsmen who have registered three fifties including hundreds are SP Fleming, ML Hayden, JH Kallis and LPC Silva. GC Smith is the only batsman to register four fifties in the current edition.

R Bopara and PA Nixon posted England’s World Cup seventh wicket partnership record when they added 87 runs in this game. The previous best was 71 run unfinished stand between PA Nixon and LE Plunkett against New Zealand at Gros Islet in this edition.

RT Ponting completed 1000 runs in the World Cup when he drove DR Brown to the long on for a boundary. This boundary took RT Ponting past 1000 to 1002. He became the second Aussie batsman to aggregate 1000 runs in World Cup after Mark Waugh {1004}. With RT Ponting completing 1000 runs in this game, Australia earned the distinction of becoming the first country in World Cup to have two batsmen with 1000 plus runs. RT Ponting’s second boundary of the match, a ferocious pull to the mid wicket of DR Brown took him past Mark Waugh’s 1004 making him the highest run getter for Australia in World Cup. This boundary gave RT Ponting 1006 World Cup runs. At the end of the Aussie innings, RT Ponting’s World cup aggregate stood at 1111.

Aussie openers Gilchrist and Hayden were both dismissed leg before wicket providing the fifth instance of both the openers dismissed leg before wicket in the World Cup games.

DR Brown’s figures of 1 for 86 makes him the eleventh bowler to concede 80 plus runs in the World Cup

Anderson Cummins becomes the second cricketer to represent two countries in the World Cup Games. He has represented West Indies in World Cup in six games. The first cricketer to represent two countries in World Cup games is Kepler Wessels. He played 03 World Cup games for Australia and nine games for South Africa.

Steve Tikolo became the most capped player for Kenya in World Cup. This game was his 21st appearance. Prior to this game, he was on par with KO Otieno and MA Suji who had 20 World Cup appearances

JP Gray’s 115 not out make him the 12th batsman to score a hundred on World Cup debut. W Porterfield’s zero and JP Bray’s 115 not out provide the second instance of openers registering zero and a hundred in WC games. The first such instance was witnessed when Aamir Sohail failed to score and Ramiz Raja got 119 not out for Pakistan against New Zealand at Christchurch on 18.03.92

The overnight rain delayed the start and the match was a 40 over a side.

South Africa added 114 runs for the second wicket – after losing the first without a run on the board – through GC Smith and JH Kallis. AB de Villers’s zero and GC Smith’s 66 in this game provides the sixth instance of openers with zero and fifty in World Cup games. This is the second such instance against Netherlands in the World Cup. The first occasion was New Zealand openers CM Spearman {68} and NJ Astle {zero} at Baroda on 17.02.96

HH Gibbs became the fourth batsman in the World Cup to clout seven or more sixes in an innings. The other three are RT Ponting {08}, IVA Richards {07} and SC Ganguly {07}

This game witnessed for the first time in the annals of one day games, three three figure partnerships in an innings – 114 for the second wicket between GC Smith and JH Kallis : 105 for the third wi
cket between JH Kallis and HH Gibbs and 134* for the fourth wicket between JH Kallis and MV Boucher. This is also the first occasion when a team has posted century partnership for the consecutive second, third and fourth wickets in the history of one day games.

South Africa’s 353 for 3 is a record score for a forty over game. It is also their best team total in a World Cup game. Previous best – 328-3 in 50.0 overs against Netherlands at Rawalpindi on 16.02.96

For the fifth time in a World Cup game, four batsmen registered fifty plus scores in an innings. GC Smith {66}, JH Kallis {128 not out}, HH Gibbs {72} and MV Boucher {75 not out} were the batsmen who registered fifties

HH Gibbs created a World record for most sixes in over – He hit six sixes in an over – never achieved by any batsman in the annals of one day games – the bowler was Dan van Bunge – his fourth over

MV Boucher created a record for the fastest fifty in WC games. He made 51 of 21 deliveries. The earlier record was in the name of Brian Lara who had made a fifty in 23 delivers against Canada in the 2003 edition.

For the first time in World Cup, a South African Wicket keeper registered a fifty through Mark Boucher who made 75 not out in this game.

India vs Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh are meeting for the first time in World Cup.

Tendulkar is now on par with Javagal Srinath for most World Cup appearance for India. Both are on 34 appearances.

Rahul Dravid is the fifth Indian captain to lead in WC games. Others are M Azharuddin {23}, Kapil Dev {15}, SC Ganguly {11} and S Venkataraghavan {06}. Azharuddin with 23 captaincy assignments holds the World record for World Cup games.

For the first time in the World Cup a team has three batsmen with 10,000 plus runs – Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid.

When Tendulkar was dismissed for seven in this game, it was the seventh occasions that he was dismissed for single digit runs including zeroes in the World Cup.

Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal, Saqibul Hasan and Mushfiqar Rahim became the 53rd, 54th and 55th batsmen in the World Cup to register fifty plus scores on WC debut. They become the seventh, eighth and ninth batsmen to achieve the feat in 2007 World Cup.

Saurav Ganguly’s 66 and Tamim Iqbal’s 51 provides the 26th instance of rival openers registering fifties excluding hundreds in World Cup games.

Tamim Iqbal became the fourth youngest debutant in the World cup. He made his debut at the age of 17 years and 362 days. Talha Jubair of Bangladesh vs West Indies at Benoni in 2003 at the age of 17 years and 70 days : SP Pasqual of Sri Lanka vs New Zealand at Nottingham in 1979 at the age of 17 years and 237 days : TM Odoya of Kenya vs India at Cuttack in 1996 at the age of 17 years and 282 days. Tamim Iqbal is one of the seven Bangladesh cricketers who have made their debut in World Cup as youngest cricketers.

SC Ganguly and V Sehwag’s 202 run stand for the second wicket provides the eighth instance of a 200 run partnership in World Cup

India’s 413 for 5 in this game is the highest total ever recorded by a team in World Cup. It was an improvement over Sri Lanka’s 398 for 5 against Kenya at Kandy on 06.03.96 in 1996 edition. The total was India’s highest in a World Cup game – an improvement over the hitherto best of 373-6 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26.05.99 in 1999 edition.

India became the fourth country to post 400 plus runs in a World Cup game. The other three countries are Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Indian batsmen registered two three figure partnerships in this game – 204 between SC Ganguly and V Sehwag for the second wicket and 122 runs between Yuvaraj Singh and SR Tendulkar for the fifth wicket providing the ninth instance of two or more three figure partnerships in an innings in a World Cup game. This is the second instance involving Indian batsman. It is India’s second three figure stand for the fifth wicket, the first one being 141 runs between AD Jadeja and Robin Singh against Australia at The Oval on 04.06.99 in 1999.

SC Ganguly {89}, V Sehwag {114}, Yuvaraj Singh {87} and Tendulkar {57 not out} registered fifties in this game, providing the sixth instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in a World Cup game.

The 18 sixes scored by Indian batsmen equalled the most sixes by a team registered in One dayers by South Africa against Netherlands on 16.03.07 at St Kitts.

New Zealand and Kenya

Steve Tikolo becomes the first skipper from non test playing nations to lead in 50 ODIs. When he went out for toss with Stephen Fleming of New Zealand, Tikolo was leading Kenya for the 50th time

When Stephen Fleming and RL Taylor added 105 runs for the second wicket after the first had fallen at zero, their stand provided the second instance of a three figure partnership after the first had fallen at Zero in World Cup. The first occasion was when South Africa’s GC Smith and JH Kallis added 114 runs after they lost AB de Villers for zero against Netherlands at St Kitts on 16.03.07 in this edition.

New Zealand’s 331-7 in this game provides the third instance of 300 plus runs in the World Cup. The other two instances are 307-5 against East Africa at Birmingham in 1975 and 307-8 against Holland at Baroda in 1996. New Zealand’s 331-7 in this game is its highest score in World Cup.

Sanath Jayasuriya with seven sixes in this innings now holds the record of most sixes in a career. His tally of sixes stood at 231. Prior to this game Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi had 224 sixes to his credit. Shahid Afridi hit one six against Zimbabwe taking his tally to 225.

Sanath Jaysuriya during his three figure knock also bettered the Sri Lankan record for most sixes in the World Cup which was in the name of PA de Silva who had 15 sixes to his credit. Jayasuriya has now 20 sixes to his credit at the end of the game.

Jayauriya hit seven sixes in this game. He equalled the record of seven sixes held by IVA Richards, SC Ganguly, HH Gibbs, BJ Hodge and Yuvaraj Singh. Only RT Ponting and Imran Nazir have scored eight sixes in an innings, the latter equaling RT Ponting’s eight sixes in the match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe at Jamaica

Abdur Razak with his figures of 10.0-0-86-1 becomes the 14th bowler in the World Cup to concede 80 plus runs in World Cup.

Sanath Jayasuriya with 20 sixes becomes the fifth batsman to have an aggregate of 20 plus sixes in the World Cup. The other four are SC Ganguly {25}, RT Ponting {25}, IVA Richards {22} and HH Gibbs {21}.

Muthaiah Muralitharan conceded 10000 runs in their one day career during this game. He needed two runs for “Bowler’s Ten thousand” prior to this match. He became the fourth and fifth bowlers in the history of One day Internationals to concede 10000 runs. The other three are Wasim Akram of Pakistan, Anil Kumble of India and Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka.

McCullum wrested record for the fastest fifty in terms of balls in World Cup which was held by MV Boucher of South Africa against Netherlands at St Kitts on 16.03.07. Boucher had scored the fifty in 21 balls and B McCullum rewrote the same in one ball less – 20 balls.

The following are the fastest fifties scored against Canada in World Cup – BB McCullum 52 not out in 20 balls with one four and five six at St Lucia on 22.03.07 : BC Lara 73 in 23 balls with six fours and four sixes and WW Hinds – 64 in 24 minutes with seven fours and three sixeers

New Zealand registered its World cup best total of 363-5 an improvement over its previous best of 331-7 in the previous game against Kenya at St Lucia on 20.03.07

L Vincent’s 101 and SP Fleming’s 66 in this game provides the seventh instance of openers registering fifty and hundred in World Cup.

McCullum’s 52 not out in this game provides the 47th instance of a Wicket keeper registering fifty including hundreds in World Cup games. McCulum is the second New Zealand Wicket keeper to register a fifty in World Cup after LK Germon’s 89 against Australia at Madras in 1996 edition.

New Zealand’s 363-05 in this game is the ninth instance of 300 plus by a team in the current edition which equals the nine instances posted in 2003 edition
