Match No 5 : Bangalore Provident {Rural} vs Shamanoor Davanagere Diamonds at Bangalore on 18.09.10 : Shamanoor Davangere Diamonds won by four runs

Put into bat Shamanoor Davanagere Diamonds scored 116 for 5 and held its nerves to defend the total by restricting Bangalore Provident {Rural} to 112 for 8, to win the game by four runs.

Veteran Yere Goud was at his best in this game and was the top scorer of the match. In a stay of 52 minutes he faced 31 deliveries and hit two boundaries in his score of 30. He forged partnerships of 18 runs for the second wicket with MA Agarwal, 41 runs for the third wicket in the company of SN Raju. SN Raju {23} was the next best scorer in Davanagere team.

A Katti {2 for 18}, A Jagan {2 for 22}, NC Aiyappa {27} and DH Sunil Kumar {1 for 27} shared the wickets that fell in Davanagere team.

Bangalore Provident were at a comfortable stage with the score board reading 95 for 5 in 17,1 overs. They needed 22 runs from 19 deliveries for a win. It lost four more wickets in 19 deliveries and scored 112 and fell five runs short of the target

Match No 4 : Mangalore United vs Mysore Maharaajas at Bangalore on 17.09.10. Mysore Maharajaas won by seven wickets under VJD Method

Intermittent rains and the wet outfield reduced this game to a nine overs a side. The match was started at 8.45 PM instead of the scheduled start of 6.30 PM.

Mangalore United batted first after winning the toss and scored 68 for 5 in the allotted nine overs. Bharat Chipli {12}, R Jonathan {18}, Md Azgar Pasha {14 not out} and Karun Nair {16} were the batsmen to reach double figures.

Chetan Williams {2 for 20}, C Raghavendra {2 for 10} and Tarun Muthanna {1 for 09} shared the wickets that fell in Mangalore United’s innings.

Mysore Maharaaja’s innings won the game by seven wickets scoring the required run with a consummate ease. KB Pawan and HT Sudhir Rao added 26 runs for the first wicket. Another useful unfinished stand of 30 runs for the fourth wicket between Nitin Bille and Manjunath SP ensured that the target was reached. They won by seven wickets under VJD method with a score of 69 for 3.

Nitn Bhille was the top scorer with 27 not out in a stay of 20 minutes. He was at the crease for 20 minutes and his knock contained two fours and two sixes.

The second contrived game of the second edition of Mantri-KPL 2010 saw Malnad Gladiators pip Shamanoor Davanagere Diamonds by two runs under VJD Method

Malnad Gladiatos who had the option to bat after being inserted scored 149 runs for the loss of eight wickets in its quota of 20 overs. It had a none-too-impressive start losing its inform skipper Ganesh Satish lured by BN Bharat in the slips cordon – a catch well taken by rival skipper Sunil Joshi for 6, the wicket falling at 8. It lost its second wicket at 13, that of the other opener K Shashindra – again to BN Bharat to a snick taken by CM Gautham for 5. Kunal Kapoor and Raju Bhatkal stemmed the rot by propping up the innings by adding 29 runs for the third wicket.

Malnad Gladiators lost their wickets regularly but with some fruitful partnerships in between. 33 runs were added for the fifth wicket between Kunal Kapoor and Nishanth Hegde and 34 runs were added for the unfinished stand of ninth wicket between Ryan Ninan and SL Akshay ensured Malnad Gladiators reach a respectable total of 149 for 8 wickets

Kunal Kapoor who came in at the fall of the first wicket batted sensibly and forged useful partnerships, before he was bowled by Prasanna Patil for a well compiled 43. His essay contained five boundary fours and one boundary six. He was at the crease for 55 minutes and faced 34 deliveries

Ryan Ninan’s swash buckling innings was a total contrast to Kunal Kapoor’s innings. Sent at number eight, to deliver the goods, he kept up the faith reposed by his captain. He remained not out on 32 not out which came with the help of two fours and two sixes in a stay of 15 minutes and in 17 deliveries. The last over of the innings was the most expensive over of the innings as it fetched 21 runs.

BN Bharat {3 for 44} and Prasanna Patil {3 for 23} were the most successful bowlers for the Shamanoor Davanagere Diamonds.

Mayank Agarwal and CM Gautham shared the opening stand of 89 runs in 10.1 overs or the first wicket when Davanagere team batted. The latter was the first to leave with his individual score reading 33 runs. After the fall of the first wicket, Ganesh Satish led his team admirably. He used his resources to the maximum benefit of the team and applied pressure on the batsmen relentlessly. Davanger Diaomonds lost wickets are regular intervals and the score board slipped form 89 for 1 to 113 for 5 – losing four wickets for 24 runs. Mayank Agarwal {56}, Sunil Raju {02}, Nidish {07} and skipper Sunil Joshi {02} were the batsmen to depart.

When Davanagere Diamonds were 113 for 5, the play was stopped due to rain and could not be resumed again as the downpour was heavy. The VJD Method was applied and it was found that Davanagere Diamonds were 2 runs short of the par score which was 115 for 5 in 16.0 overs.

Mayank Agarwal’s 56 was embellished with two four and four sixes. He occupied the crease for 56 minutes and faced 35 deliveries. CM Gautham’s 33 came of 36 deliveries contained four fours in a stay of 48 minutes. Agarwal was aggressive of the two. His share was 47 runs in the first wicket stand which yielded 89 runs.

Some wreckless batting by the middle order batsmen in order to push the score in view of threatening rains cost the Davanagere Diamonds the match.

Ganesh Satish kept his head cool and his tactics of applying pressure by making subtle bowling changes and field placements paid off which saw his team victorious by two runs.

SL Akshay {2 for 21}, K Gowtham {1 for 23} and Ryan Ninan {1 for 18} shared the four of the five wickets that fell while one was run out.

Match Number 10 : Guyana vs Mumbai Indians at Durban on 16.09.10: Mumbai won by 31 runs

Mumbai posted 184 for 4 in this game providing the third occasion of it posting 175 plus runs in the tournament. The other two occasions are – 177 for 6 vs Lions at Jo’burg on 10.09.10 and 180 for 7 vs South Australia at Durban on 16.10.09

Mumbai made its debut in the tournament this year and this game is its third game of the tournament. This it has posted 175 plus runs in three consecutive games. Further Mumbai is the only team which has posted 175 plus runs on three occasions in the tournament.

KA Pollard scored 72 not out in this game providing the 36^th occasion of a batsman scoring a fifty in the tournament. His knock represents the fourth occasion of a batsman scoring a fifty while batting at number three in the tournament. His knock also represents the second occasion of a Mumbai batsman scoring fifty, the first being SR Tendulkar’s 69 against Lions at Jo’burg on 10.09.10. Match No 2 : Bijapur Bulls vs Bangalore Provident {Rural} at Bangalore on 16.09.10 : Bijapur Bulls won by five wickets under VJD Method

A contrived match due to rain saw the defending champions Bangalore Provident {Rural} go down to Bijapur Bulls by five wickets.

Batting first the defending champions put a decent total of 123 for 4 in 17.0 overs when rain gods opened up. The total was largely responsible to the contributions from the opening batsman MK Manjunath {47} and Rahul Bhatkal {39 not out} and their stand for the 67 runs for the third wicket. MK Manjunath was the best batsman on the show and was in his element right from the word go. The opening stand with another veteran VS Thilak Naidu was worth 41 runs in 34 deliveries. MK Manjunath added 67 runs in 28 minutes and 43 deliveries in the company of Rahul Bhatkal which was the substance of Provident’s innings. Manjunath’s innings of 47 contained five boundaries which came in 42 deliveries in a stay of 66 minutes at the crease. Rahul Bhatkal was equally efficient in the company of Manjunath and hit two fours and two sixes and his 39 came in 28 deliveries and he was at the crease for 36 minutes. Devaraj Patil excelled behind the wicket by effecting three dismissals – two caught and one stumped.

Stuart Binny {1 for 33}, DV Anish {2 for 22} and B Rajashekhar {1 for 24} shared the four wickets that fell in Provident’s innings.

Set a revised target of 75 runs of nine overs for a win, Bijapur Bulls batsmen were right on their knees from the start. Former Karnataka and Rajasthan batsman, Mithun Beerla and Gaurav Dhiman gave a brisk start to their innings by posting 42 for the first wicket in 5.3 overs. Mithun, the eldest son of the former Mysore/Karnataka opening batsman B Raghunath, was one of the leading scorers in the first edition, showed the willingness to stay at the crease, to rise the tempo according to the situation and took the challenge into enemy’s camp thus taking his team to a facile win. He was the first to leave – stumped by wicket keeper of Anand Katti for 26. His innings contained three boundaries and a six in a stay of 25 minutes at the crease. His 26 runs came of 21 deliveries.

There was a minor scare for Bijapur Bulls as they lost three wickets at the score of 67 in the eighth over of the innings. Gauran Dhiman {17}, Devraj Patil {23} and Sudhindra Shinde {Zero} were the batsmen dismissed of the third, fourth and fifth deliveries of the eighth over. NC Aiyappa, the former Karnataka Ranji pace bowler, earning a Hattrick in this game. But his effort came a bit too late for Provident. Added to the misery of losing three-in-three, Bulls lost a wicket through a run out {Nitin Mulky for 01} of the last ball of the eighth over. The strong foundation laid by Bulls’ openers sustained the loss the four wickets in four balls and romped home by five wickets with three balls to spare.

For the losers NC Aiyappa was the pick of the bowlers by capturing 3 wickets conceding eight runs which included a Hattrick. Devaraj Patil was adjudged “Man of the Match” for his all round display – 23 runs with the willow and three dismissals with the glove

Match Number 1: Malnad Gladiators vs Belgavi Panthers at Bangalore on 16.09.10: Belgavi Panthers won by eight wickets

Belgavi Panthers cruised to a facile eight wickets win over Malnad Gladiators at KSCA Stadium, Bangalore in the inaugural match of Mantri-KPL 2010 edition.

Malnag Gladiators who made the first use of the pitch totalled 110 for six in its 20 overs. Useful contributions from skipper Ganesh Satish {25} and Raju Bhatkal {27 not out} helped Gladiators to put up this score. Some tight bowling by Belgavi Panthers restricted them to score freely. Syed Jeeshan Ali was the most economical bowler on the scene with figures of 4.0-0-13-1, while the most expensive bowler was Ramling Patil who gave away 29 runs for his lone wicket in four overs. Dhananjay {1 for 22}, Rohit More {2 for 23} and B Naveen {1 for 21} are the other bowlers who chanced their arm and conceded less than 25 runs in their four over quota. Rohit More was the most successful bowler for Belgavi Panthers with 2 for 23.

Belgavi Panthers lost – their skipper J Arunkumar for five – early in their chase , but two fifty runs partnerships – 52 runs partnership for the second wicket between Shyam Ponnappa and Suraj Sampath for the second wicket and 59 runs unfinished stand for the third wicket between Suraj Sampath and S Vinod ensured them a facile eight wicket win with eight balls to spare.

Suraj Sampath {60 not out}, S Vinod {29 not out} and Shyam Ponnapp {17} excelled with the willow for Belgavi Panthers, while Raju Bhatkal and Ryan Ninan shared the wickets that fell in Belgavi Panthers’ innings

Suraj Sampath’s essay contained six boundary fours and one boundary six in 55 deliveries. The winning hit was a six which came from the blade of Suraj Sampath

Match Number 9 : Chennai Super Kings vs Wayamba at Centurion on 15.09.10 : Chennai Super Kings won by 97 runs

Chennai Super Kings won this game by 97 runs providing the largest margin of victory in terms of runs in the tournament. The previous best was 80 runs victory carved by Royal Challengers Bangalore over Otago at Bangalore on 12.10.09

Chennai Super Kings posted a total of 200 for 3 providing the second occasion of a team posting a total in excess of 200 runs in the tournament. The other occasions was Cape Cobras’ total of 213 for 4 vs Eagles at Hyd-RGS on 18.10.09

Wayamba were dismissed all out for 103 runs providing the seventh occasion of a team all out in the tournament.

PJ Ingram was dismissed by the first ball of the match in this game – he was caught by JW Hastings of the bowling of PM Siddle for zero – providing the second occasion of a batsman dismissed by the first ball of the innings in CLT20 games.
