This is the second occasion that SR Tendulkar scored a fifty in eight consecutive tests. SR Tendulkar earned the distinction of becoming the only batsman in the annals of test cricket to register fifty in eight consecutive tests on two occasions.

SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 109 runs for the fifth wicket in this innings providing the 48th occasion of Indian batsmen posting a three figure partnership against Sri Lanka. This partnership provides the tenth occasion of a three figure partnership for the fifth wicket by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka.

Indian batsmen were concerned in a three figure partnership for the fifth wicket in first and second innings. In the first innings, VVS Laxman and SK Raina added 105 runs and in the second innings SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 109 runs. India has achieved the feat of posting a three figure partnership for the fifth in both innings of a test against Sri Lanka on three occasions including the one in this test. The first occasion was at Col-SSC in Aug 1997 when– SC Ganguly-SR Tendulkar pair added 150 runs in the first innings and M Azaruddin-SC Ganguly pair added 110 runs and the second occasion was at Ahmedabad in Nov 2009 when R Dravid-Yuvraj Singh pair added 125 runs in the first innings and SR Tendulkar-VVS Laxman pair added 137* runs,

S Randiv captured five wickets conceding 82 runs in this test providing the 131st occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler capturing five or more wickets in a test innings. His figures also represent the 33rd occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler’s five wicket haul going in vain.

S Randiv’s 5 for 82 in this test provide the 21st occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against India. It also represents the sixth occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler’s five wicket haul in a losing cause against India. The other five occasions are – 5 for 85 by JR Ratanayeke at Cuttack in Jan 1987, 5 for 162 by M Muralitharan at Lucknow in Jan 1994, 7 for 100 by M Muralitharan at Delhi in Dec 2005, 6 for 117 by BAW Mendis at Galle in Jul 2009 and 5 for 121 by HMRKB Herath at Kanpur in Nov 2009.

India won this test by chasing a target of 257 runs providing the fifth occasion of India chasing a target of 250 plus runs. SR Tendulkar added one more record to his surfeit of records when he scored a fifty – 54 – in the second innings of the third test at Sara Oval against Sri Lanka. His fifty in this test gave him the feat of scoring fifty in eight consecutive tests.

It is the second time in his test career that he has scored fifty in eight consecutive tests. This feat gives him the unique distinction of scoring fifty in eight consecutive tests on two occasions. He is the only batsman to achieve the feat in the annals of test cricket.

Prasanna Jayawardene of Sri Lanka was dismissed for zero after facing one delivery in the second innings of the Sri Lanka against India in the third test at Sara Oval which is in progress. He has been dismissed for a first ball duck on three occasions – vs Australia at Hobart in Nov 2007, vs Bangladesh at Chittagong in Jan 2009 and vs India at Col-PSS in Aug 2010. He holds the record for most first ball ducks by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper. He wrested the record from KC Sangakkara who had collected two first ball ducks.

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs of his test career when he was on 12 during his knock of 28 in Sri Lanka’s second innings. At the end of the third test, his run aggregate stood at 8016. He became the 21st batsman in the world to reach the milestone. He is the second Sri Lankan batsman to achieve the feat after DPMD Jayawardene.

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs {8016} in his 152nd innings. He reached the milestone in least number of innings amongst the batsman who have reached 8000 runs. The previous record was held by SR Tendulkar who had reached the milestone in 154 innings.

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs in his 91st test. He now shares the record with GS Sobers of West Indies who had also reached 8000 in 91 tests. {Sobers ended his test career with 8039 runs from 91 tests}. Both these two batsmen have reached 8000 runs in least number of tests

KC Sangakkara stands second in the list of batsmen who have taken least number of days to reach 8000 runs – R Dravid {9 years and 173 days}, KC Sangakkara {10 years and 16 days} and RT Ponting {10 years and 25 days}. KC Sangakkara improved upon RT Ponting’s record by nine days.

SL Malinga captured his 100th wicket in tests when he had SR Tendulkar caught at the wicket by HAPW Jayawardene for 41 in this test. At the end of India’s first innings his aggregate stood at 101. He became the 152nd bowler to capture 100 plus wickets in test cricket. He is the third Sri Lankan bowler after M Muralitharan {800} and WPUJC Vaas {355} to total 100 plus wickets in tests

With two catches to his credit in India’s innings, DPMD Jayawardene extended his tally of catches against India to 20. He became the second fieldsman in Sri Lanka-India test series to pouch 20 plus catches after M Azharuddin who has taken 27 catches. He pouched two more catches in India’s second innings to take his tally of catches against India to 22.

At the end of the fourth day of this test, DPMD Jayawardene has aggregated 161 catches. Other fieldsmen who have pouched more catches are – R Dravid {196}, ME Waugh {181}, RT Ponting {172}, SP Fleming {171} and BC Lara {164}

DPMD Jayawardene with four catches in this test so far {two in each innings} has pouched 101 catches on home soil. He earned the distinction of becoming the first fieldsman to pouch 100 plus catches on home soil. Prior to this test he was on par with MA Taylor who has pouched 97 catches. His claimed his 100th catch when he caught V Sehwag of S Randiv for zero in India’s second innings.

TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis added 118 plus runs for the ninth wicket providing the 45th occasion of batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the ninth wicket in the annals of test cricket. This stand also represents the third occasion of Sri Lankan batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the ninth wicket. Other two occasions are – 101 runs between ST Jayasuriya and CRD Fernando vs Pakistan at Faisalabad in Oct 2004 and 105 runs between WPUJC Vaas and KMDN Kulasekara vs England at Lord’s in May 2006. Thus the 118 runs partnership between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis in this game represent the highest three figure partnership by Sri Lankan batsman for the ninth wicket

The 118 runs stand between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis represent not only the highest stand for the ninth wicket against India but also the first three figure partnership for the ninth wicket against India. Sri Lanka’s previous best stand was 73 runs stand between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis at Kanpur in Nov 2009.
