G Gambhir scored 114 in the second innings of this test providing the 36^th hundred by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka. It also represents the ninth hundred by an Indian opening batsman against Sri Lanka.

G Gambhir’s 114 represent the 109^th hundred by an Indian opening batsman in a test innings against various oppositions. It also represents the seventh hundred by G Gambhir as an opening batsman in a test innings. SM Gavaskar {33}, V Sehwag {14} and NS Sidhu {08} are the three other Indian opening batsmen who have scored more hundreds than G Gambhir.

DPMD Jayawardene completed 9000 test runs when he was on 253 during his knock of 275. At the end of the test, his run aggregate stood at 9022. He became the tenth batsman in the world to aggregate 9000 plus runs. SR Tendulkar (12877}, BC Lara {11953}, RT Ponting {11345}, AR Border {11174}, R Dravid {11038}, SR Waugh {10927}, JH Kallis {10277} and SM Gavaskar {10122} are the other nine batsmen who have an aggregate more than DPMD Jayawardene

V Sehwag’s 51 represent the 33^rd test fifty of his career. It was his 18^th test half century. It was his 30^th fifty as an opening batsman – 14 centuries and 16 half centuries G Gambhir’s 114 represents his 17^th fifty as an opening batsman – 07 centuries and 10 half centuries

SR Tendulkar completed 1500 runs against Sri Lanka when he was on 88 during his knock of 100 not out in the second innings. At the end of the test, his aggregate stood at 1512. He became the first batsman in India-Sri Lanka test series to total 1500 runs. He wrested the record from M Jayawardne who has aggregate of 1436 runs

SR Tendulkar’s 100 not out in this test represent the 74^th occasion of an Indian batsman registering a hundred in the third innings of a test match.

SR Tendulkar’s 100 not out in this test represents his eighth hundred in the third innings of a test match which is a record for most hundreds in the third innings by an Indian batsman. The previous record was held by SM Gavaskar who has scored seven hundreds in the third innings of a test match.

SR Tendulkar with his eight test hundreds in the third innings of a test match is on par with MD Crowe of New Zealand and MA Taylor of Australia who have also scored eight hundreds. Only ML Hayden {10} and AR Border {09} have scored most hundreds than SR Tendulkar, MD Crowe and MA Taylor in the third innings of a test match

It is interesting to note that this record were credited to Australasian batsmen – Australia {ML Hayden, AR Border, MA Taylor} and New Zealand {MD Crowe}, till an Indian batsman SR Tendulkkar joined this list.

SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 137 runs in an unfinished stand for the fifth wicket providing the 38^th occasion of a three figure partnership posted by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka. This stand also represents the sixth occasion of a three figure partnership for the fifth posted by Indian batmen against Sri Lanka.

R Dravid and Yuvraj Singh added 125 runs for the first wicket in the first innings and SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 137 runs in an unfinished stand for the fifth wicket in the second innings. This is the second occasion of Indian batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the fifth wicket in the first and second innings. The first occasion was at Col-SSC in Aug 97 – M Azharuddin and SC Ganguly were concerned in a 150 run stand for the fifth wicket in the first innings and the same paid added 112 runs for the fifth wicket in the second innings

DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket provides the 72^nd occasion of a 300 plus runs partnership in the annals of test cricket.

DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket which represents the world record partnership for the sixth wicket. The pair wrested the previous best for the sixth wicket which was credited to JH Fingleton and DG Bradman who had added 346 runs in the test match between Australia and England at Melbourne in Jan 1937. Thus “Jayawardene pair” rewrote 72 old record.

DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket provides the third occasion of a 300 plus runs partnership for the sixth wicket in the annals of test cricket. The other two occasions are – 346 runs between JH Fingleton and DG Bradman in the test between Australia and England at Melbourne in Jan 1937 and 317 runs between DR Martyn and AC Gilchrist in the test between Australia and South Africa at Johannesburg in Feb 2002

MS Dhoni scored 110 for India while HAPW Jayaawardene scored 154 not out for Sri Lanka providing the second occasion of rival wicket keeper batsmen scoring hundreds in a test match. The first such occasion was witnessed in a test match between West Indies and India at St John’s in May 02. A Ratra scored 115 not out for India, while RD Jacobs scored 118 for West Indies. It is interesting to note that on both these occasions an Indian wicket keeper is involved

MS Dhoni scored 110 for India, while HAPW Jayaawardene scored 154 not out for Sri Lanka providing the 155^th occasion of a wicket keeper batsmen scoring hundred in a test match.

HAPW Jayawardene’s 154 not out represent the 16^th occasion of a Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman scoring a hundred in a test match. KGDT Prasad returned with figures of 22.0-1-106-2 providing the 33^rd occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler conceding 100 plus runs in a test innings against India.

M Muralitharan had an aggregate of 298 wickets on away soil and his three wickets in India’s first innings gave him 301 away wickets. He became the second bowler in the world to aggregate 300 wickets on away soil after SK Warne of Australia who has 362 away wickets to his credit.

M Muralitharan had an aggregate of 88 wickets against India prior to the start of the series and his three wickets in India’s first innings gave him 91 Indian wickets, He became the second bowler to capture 90 plus wickets against India, the first bowler being Imran Khan of Pakistan who has an aggregate of 94 wickets to his credit.

At the end of India’s first innings Muralitharan has 91 wickets against India. He has already captured 112 wickets against England and 104 wickets against South Africa. His 91 wickets against India game him the distinction of capturing 90 plus wickets against three specific oppositions. He became the second bowler in the annals of test cricket to capture 90 plus wickets against three or more specific oppositions, after SK Warne of Australia who has captured 90 plus wickets against four specific oppositions viz., vs England {195}, vs New Zealand {103}, vs Pakistan {90} and vs South Africa {130}.

Ishant Sharma was stumped by HAPW Jayawardne of the bowling of M Muralitharan. Ishant Sharma became the 47^th stumping victim of M Muralitharan.

TM Dilshan’s 112 represent the 174^th hundred by a Sri Lankan batsman in a test innings. His knock also represents 31^st hundred by a Sri Lankan batsman against India.

First Day’s highlights

India won the toss in this game providing the 20^th occasion of India winning the toss in India-Sri Lanka Test series. Out of the previous 19 encounters, when India had won the toss, India has won nine tests, lost two tests and eights tests were drawn

India is playing its tenth test at Motera, Ahmedabad. Out of the previous nine tests, it has won three tests, lost two tests and four tests were drawn.

SR Tendulkar equaled the series record of 20 appearances held by A Ranatunga of Sri Lanka. Ahmedabad test was SR Tendulkar’s 20^th appearance against Sri Lanka. SR Tendulkar became the first Indian cricketer to play 20 tests against Sri Lanka.

Ahmedabad test apparaance was SR Tendulkar’s 160th test appearances. He became the second cricketer in the annals of test cricket to play 160 plus tests after SR Waugh of Australia who has 168 test appearances to his credit.

SR Tendulkar was dismissed bowled in the first innings providing the 41^st occasion of his being dismissed bowled in a test innings. He equaled the Indian record of a batsman dismissed bowled on most occasions held by GR Viswanath who was also dismissed bowled on 41 occasions. AR Border of Australia {53}, JR Reid of New Zealand {44} and JH Kallis of South Africa {42} are the batsmen who are dismissed bowled on more occasions than SR Tendulkar and GR Viswanath.

R Dravid’s fifty { 177*} at the end of the first day represents his 65th fifty while batting at number three in a test innings. Only RT Ponting of Australia {66} has scored more fifties than R Dravid while batting at number three.

R Dravid’s fifty {177*} at the end of the second day represents the 84^th fifty of his test career. SR Tendulkar {95}, AR Border {90}, RT Ponting {86} are the three batsmen who have scored more fifties than R Dravid.

R Dravid hit a boundary six during the course of his innings of 177 not out at the end of the first day, which represents the 16^th six of his test career.

R Dravid and Yuvraj Singh added 125 runs for the fourth wicket and R Dravid and MS Dhoni added 224 runs for the fifth wicket, providing the 77^th and 78^th occasions of R Dravid being one of the partner in a three figure partnerships.
