D Elgar of South Africa carried his bat through the completed innings against England at Durban in the ongoing Boxing Day test to provide the 51st occasion of a batsman carrying the bat through the completed innings in the annals of test cricket. The 50th such occasion befell on India’s CA Pujara who carried his bat through the completed innings against Sri Lanka at Col-SSC in Aug 2015. All the fifty one occasions are listed below

West Indians were at the receiving end for the second time in this category of statistics. The first such occasion was also at Melbourne in Dec 1968. WM Lawry and IM Chappell posted 298 runs for the second wicket in this test.  Australia had lost its opener IR Redpath for 7 runs when the score card read 14. WM Lawry and IM Chappell added 298 runs for the second wicket and the score at the fall of second wicket read 312. WM Lawry scored 205 and IM Chappell scored 165. IM Chappell was the batsman dismissed at the fall of the second wicket for 165 before he was bowled by GS Sobers.

It is interesting to note that WM Lawry has been a part on both the occasions. In 1968 as a batsman and 47 years later –  in 2015 as a commentator
